SAE Medal of Honor
Established in 1986, the SAE Medal of Honor pays tribute to a living SAE member
for unique and significant contributions to SAE International by strengthening or
adding to its ability to further its purpose. Unlike other SAE awards that recognize
technical achievements or outstanding accomplishments in the various fields of mobility
engineering, this award honors an individual for their contributions to the overall SAE
International organization. The significance of the contributions shall have been tested
over time and shall be regarded as a major factor in SAE’s success.
This award consists of a framed medallion made of precious metals.
ARNOLD W. SIEGEL
PRESIDENT
ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION ASSOCIATES, INC.
Mr. Siegel is being recognized for his more than 50 years of
dedicated and meritorious service to SAE International and
the SAE Foundation.
Mr. Siegel is a pioneer in the field of automotive safety. His
research has led to many safety features that are now common
in production vehicles. In addition, he helped initiate SAE
International’s entry in the automotive safety field and
contributed to many SAE standards and conferences; the result of which has greatly
improved auto safety globally. Through the years, he has served as a university professor
and industry consultant. He helped pioneer research on barrier, side-impact, rollover
head-on, motorcycle and pedestrian crashes. He built the first infant and child dummies,
crash tested them and worked on and designed the first rear-ward facing infant safety
seats and child booster seats. He and a physician began non-fatal, on-scene accident
investigation using multi-disciplinary teams. He co-directed trauma research groups and
developed and organized training programs for several governmental agencies, including
the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Mr. Siegel has been a major factor in the success of both SAE International and the SAE
Foundation. He has served on the SAE International Board of Directors, numerous
Society committees, sub-committees and operating boards. In addition, he also has
been a long-standing member of the SAE Foundation’s Board of Trustees and, for years,
served as co-chair of the SAE-managed STAPP Car Crash conference, which helped to
place SAE International at the center of automotive safety progress. In 1987, Mr. Siegel
established the Arnold W. Siegel International Transportation Safety Award.
Mr. Siegel has been an important reason for the outstanding success of the SAE
Foundation’s programs, especially A World In Motion®. He was a key contributor in the
planning and undertaking of the SAE Foundation’s highly successful $25 million Capital
Campaign. Through SAE International and the SAE Foundation, Mr. Siegel has tirelessly
worked to improve education in science, math, technology, and engineering (STEM) at
all levels.

Mr. Siegel is an SAE International Fellow, and a member of the California Association
of Criminalists, Sigma Xi, and is a professional safety engineer. He was a member of
the Attorney General’s Traffic Safety Committee and the California Passenger Safety
Resource Panel, and has been a consultant to many agencies and companies, including
Physicians for Automotive Safety, and the SAE International Accident Investigation
Practices Subcommittee. Mr. Siegel has received many rewards, including: Abelson
Leadership Award 2008; Montana Ambassador’s Plenipotentiary 2001 Award;
Humanitarian Fellowship Award; Save the Children Federation Distinguished Service
Award; Service Technician Society; and Legacy of Gold Award from West Yellowstone
Foundation.
For these and many other achievements, SAE International is proud to present its highest
award - the SAE Medal of Honor - to Arnold W. Siegel.

Established in 1975, this membership grade recognizes outstanding engineering creativity
of members and enhances the status of SAE’s contributions to the profession and the
public-at-large. The Fellow Grade of Membership was established as a prestigious and
honorary grade bestowed on individuals whose extraordinary leadership, engineering, or
scientific achievements have brought about meaningful advances in the various fields of
mobility engineering. Election to Fellow is an exceptional professional distinction.

Arch T. Colwell Cooperative
Engineering Medal
Established in 1976, this award is named in honor of Arch T. Colwell, its first recipient and
1941 SAE President. Dr. Colwell symbolized the dedication and devotion of SAE members
who work to further the objectives of the SAE Technical Standards Program.
The award recognizes a unique and outstanding contribution over a period of time to the
work of the technical committees under the SAE Technical Standards Board in developing
standards, specifications, technical reports, and data through cooperative research. It is
intended to stimulate technical committee members to greater accomplishments and the
realization of satisfaction that comes from sharing their expertise.

Arch T. Colwell Merit Award
Established in 1965, this award is funded through a generous contribution from Arch T.
Colwell, 1941 SAE President, who served SAE International in many capacities for nearly
50 years. His own technical papers were outstanding examples of engineering excellence
and clear writing.
The award recognizes authors of papers of outstanding technical or professional merit
presented at an SAE meeting or any of its Sections. Papers are judged primarily for their
value as new contributions to existing knowledge of mobility engineering.

Transportation Safety Award
Established in 1987, this award honors Arnold W. Siegel, an SAE Fellow and Medal of
Honor recipient, whose pioneering crash injury research began in 1954 at the University
of California-Los Angeles.
This award recognizes individuals whose accomplishments include outstanding
international research, innovation and contributions to crash injury protection, crash
injury biomechanics and crash injury design for all mobility vehicles: land, air, sea and
space. Recipients are those persons in leadership positions who have made a significant
transportation safety impact on their organization or on society worldwide.

Innovation
Established in 1978, this award honors the memory of Edward N. Cole, former President
and Chief Operating Officer of General Motors Corporation, and the inspiration he
provided to others in the engineering profession by his continuing search and drive for
product innovation.
The award annually recognizes an SAE member whose innovative design is described in an
SAE paper or whose lifetime of accomplishment is judged to be a significant achievement
in automotive engineering. Judgment is based upon the value of the work as an original
innovative contribution, not upon the application of some development or invention
already known.

This award recognizes an individual or groups of individuals who through their ingenuity

Franz F. Pischinger Powertrain
Innovation Award
Established in 2008, by FEV to honor Dr. Franz F. Pischinger, this award recognizes
exceptional innovation and competence in powertrain design and development through
the annual recognition of an engineer who has demonstrated outstanding innovation
in the field. The powertrain remains the “heart” of the transportation industry. It is
the singular most expensive and most complex part of every vehicle. SAE, more than
any other organization, has been integral in supporting automotive engineers in their
endeavors to improve transportation powertrains.
Dr. Franz F. Pischinger has devoted his entire career to furthering powertrain technology
and the education of young engineers as they prepared for careers in engineering. He
held leading positions in the powertrain industry for most of his 50-year career and, until
2003, was the President and CEO of FEV Motorentechnik GmbH, where he currently
retains the title of Chairman of the Board. Prof. Pischinger has also been responsible for
educating thousands of students in the field of powertrain engineering, while overseeing
the activities of the Institute for Applied Thermodynamics at the Aachen Technical
University from 1970 to 1997.
The award consists of a bronze plaque and an honorarium.

Harry L. Horning Memorial Award
Established in 1938, this award preserves the memory of the dedication of SAE’s 1925
President, Harry L. Horning, to the pursuit of improved mutual adaptability of engines
and fuels and serves as a motivation for others to follow in his footsteps.
The award annually recognizes the author(s) of the best paper(s) relating to the
better mutual adaptation of fuels and internal combustion engines presented at an
SAE International meeting or any of its Sections during any calendar year. It may
also be presented to an individual for a distinguished accomplishment in engine fuel
relationships, in which case the individual is requested to present a Horning Memorial
Lecture on an appropriate subject at a designated SAE meeting.
It consists of a framed certificate and bronze medal.

Award for Excellence in
Automotive Engineering
Established in 1988, this award is funded through Ford Motor Company and honors the
memory of Henry Ford II and the enormous impact he had on the automotive industry.
This award recognizes SAE members and teams who use their engineering skills to
achieve product or manufacturing process contributions which are assessed to have had
the greatest positive effect on the passenger car, truck and bus industries.

both professionally and personally.

Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished
Speaker Award
Established in 1984, this award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated
outstanding presentation skills. In 1993, the name of the award was changed to honor
Lloyd L. Withrow, former department head of General Motors Research Laboratories
Fuels and Lubricants Department, and a noted speaker at many SAE meetings. The intent
of the award is to maintain a high level of presentations at SAE International technical
sessions by recognizing individuals who make outstanding presentations at those sessions.
The recipient must have received the Oral Presentation Award more than twice to receive
this award.

Max Bentele Award for Engine
Technology Innovation
Established in 2001, this award honors Max Bentele for his contributions to the field of
mobility engines and his encouragement for others to innovate and promote advances in
the area.
The award annually recognizes an SAE member whose work has furthered innovation
in the manufacture, design and improvement of engine technology for ground, air or
space vehicles. It is designed for engineers under the age of 35 who have made a major
contribution through a new idea, concept, innovation or application which provides
a recognized improvement in engine technology and which has been verified through
proof of concept demonstrations. It is intended to recognize the global nature of SAE
International and the breadth of the mobility community that it serves.
The award consists of a medal, an honorarium, and a copy of Dr. Bentele’s book Engine
Revolutions.

Myers Award for Outstanding
Student Paper
Established in 1997, this award recognizes the 1969 SAE President, Dr. Phil Myers, and
his wife Jean for their lifelong devotion to students and SAE. Myers was a renowned
expert on internal combustion engines, and before his retirement, a professor at the

The award is given annually for the best technical paper presented by a student. The paper
must be based on work done by the lead author(s) while a student. The time of the work
determines student status. The presentation of the technical paper must be made by the
student at a major SAE meeting. Papers can be on any topic and from students worldwide.
Technical papers presented from June through May of the following year are eligible for
the award annually.
The award consists of an attractive memento as well as a monetary gift to the lead student
author.

Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award
Established in 1963, this award is funded through a generous contribution from Ralph
R. Teetor, 1936 SAE President, whose belief was that engineering educators are the most
effective link between engineering students and their future careers.
The award recognizes outstanding engineering educators selected on the basis of
their academic training, contributions to teaching and research, and participation in
extracurricular student involvement. This program provides an exceptional opportunity
for these educators to become acquainted with the professional activities of the ground
vehicle and aerospace industries. The intent of this award is to have educators exchange
views and technical information with practicing engineers.
The award consists of a framed certificate, a sponsored trip to an SAE conference /
meeting, a hosted industry tour, and two years of SAE membership.

Established in 1954, this award honors Russell S. Springer who funded this award through
his bequest. The award recognizes the author of an original and outstanding technical
paper presented at an SAE meeting or any of its Sections and is published in SAE literature

younger and whose paper is a distinct contribution to the literature of the profession of

Diesel Engines
Established in 2008, this award honors Dr. John H. Johnson, a presidential professor
with the Department of Mechanical-Engineering Mechanics at Michigan Technological
University (MTU) for his lifelong devotion to students, the diesel industry, public service
and SAE.
The award recognizes the authors of an original and outstanding technical paper
presented at an SAE meeting on the subject of diesel engines. The paper must be
published in SAE International’s Journals and must address research advancements in
diesel engines regarding efficiency and low emissions achieved by innovative experimental
and modeling research of the engine, fuel and/or aftertreatment system. If there is no
paper selected, the award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding
leadership in research and development in the field of diesel engines through a singular
accomplishment or lifetime achievement.
