1. demonstrate mastery of the computational skills necessary for them to succeed in Beginning Algebra.
2. demonstrate the critical thinking skills necessary for them to set up and solve word problems of the appropriate difficulty level.
3. demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to use geometric formulas to calculate perimeters, areas, and volumes.
Course Structure
2. Completing online homework and quizzes according to the timeline
3. Communicating with your instructor via email
4. Taking your final exam on campus with ID
Course Hours
This is a 3 unit course which on-campus requires 3 hours of lecture and about 6 hours of homework per week. You should expect to spend about
9 hours per week on this course. (Some students need more time and some need less.)
Online Homework, Quizzes and On Time Credits
Each week homework and/or quizzes are assigned which are due Sundays at 12 midnight. (See the timeline at the end of the syllabus for more
detailed information.) Working in order of the timeline is required. Ideally, you should strive for a 100% on each assignment, but a minimum
score of 70% is required before MyMathLab will allow you to go to the next assignment.
In order to be successful in an online math course, it is important to stay disciplined and motivated and keep up with the timeline. Working
ahead in encouraged. Dedicate several days a week to this course and stick to it! Procrastinating and trying to do all your assignments at once
usually results in poor retention and failure to complete the class. As an incentive to keep up with the course, 10% of your grade has been
dedicated to On Time Credits. Whenever your weekly assignments are turned in on or before their due date, you will also be able to submit an
On Time Credit!
Homework Policy: While working on homework, MyMathLab will have several help buttons for you. You may submit homework at any
time and return to it later with your problems and answers intact. Just make sure you click the „Submit‟ button anytime you update your
work, so that you will get credit for it. There will be homework for each section covered and also a cumulative review at the end of each
chapter.
Quiz Policy: After completing the homework and review for each chapter, there will be a 10-question quiz. The problems for the quiz are
randomly chosen from the chapter review and the numbers are changed. While working on a quiz, you will have no help buttons. Once a
quiz is submitted, there is no going back to continue. If you need to exit a quiz and finish later, simply close the window without
submitting. Your answers and problems will stay intact until you return. Also, after submitting a quiz, you may retake it again to improve
your score. In fact, you may retake your quiz as many times as you want and only the best score counts. (Note: the problems will change
each time you take a quiz as they are randomly generated from the review.)
On Time Credit Policy: On time credits may only be submitted when assignments for the week are turned in on or before the due date. If
you fall behind, you may still submit past due homework and quizzes, but not the on time credit.
Prerequisite Bypasses
On rare occasions, you may find yourself stuck on a certain section or quiz and obtaining the minimum required score of 70% is prohibiting you
from moving on. In a case like this, email your instructor and request a prerequisite bypass. You may have up
to 3 of these bypasses.
Keeping an organized notebook of work
Each student is encouraged to keep a notebook in which homework and quizzes are worked out on paper before entered in the computer. Keep it
organized by section number and problem number. These notebooks may be useful for review.
On Campus Final Exam
You will be required to complete your final exam on campus and to bring a valid California ID. The final exam will be taken in the Computer
Science/Math Lab, SM348, using your Course Compass account and the exam will follow the same format as the practice final. Arrangements
to take the final exam earlier than the scheduled date may be made with your instructor if all homework and quizzes are completed by Week 14
of the timeline.
If you are out of the Southern California area and coming to the final exam would create a hardship, you must arrange a proctor through
another college, high school, library, or military educational officer. Proctors need to be arranged at least 2 weeks before the scheduled final
exam date and your final exam must be completed by the scheduled final exam date. (Instructions on obtaining a proctor are available through
the course menu.)
Drop Policy
In order to be considered active in this course, each student must stay current with the timeline. If you fall behind 2 or more weeks you may be
dropped.
Weekly Progress Reports and Emails to the Instructor
Each week I will email you a progress report confirming that you are current or not current in the class. Print these emails for your records.
Every few weeks or so, I will ask you to email me back. Staying current and staying in touch will favorably affect your grade in borderline cases.
Keeping your email address updated with Course Compass
The only way I can contact you is via the email address you supply to Course Compass. It is your responsibility to update your email address if it
changes and to make sure that you input it correctly. To edit your email address, click on „My Account‟ in the top right corner of the Course
Compass screen.
What to do if your computer crashes or the website is down
If your computer crashes, you will need to go to a computer available on campus or use a friend‟s (make sure to run the Installation Wizard). If
the website is down for an extended period of time, I will extend the homework due date.
