HONORING A
Lifetime
FOR A LIFETIME OF CONTRIBUTIONS
TO THE CATHOLIC HEALTH MINISTRY,
MONSIGNOR EDMUND KLIMEK, SENIOR
PRIEST CHAPLAIN AT SACRED HEART
HOSPITAL, RECEIVED THE “LIFETIME
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD” FROM CATHOLIC
HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED
STATES ON JUNE 3.
Association of the United States
THE AWARD WAS GIVEN during
the Catholic Health Assembly in
Anaheim, California. The prestigious
award annually recognizes a person
who has devoted much of her/his life
to Catholic health care and who has
inspired and mentored numerous
others. The individual’s leadership
extends past the Catholic health
ministry to influence and impact the
local community and beyond.
AS THE FIRST HOSPITAL CHAPLAIN
to receive this prestigious award in its 14 year
history, Father Klimek inspired the approximately
1,000 attendees during his ten minute
acceptance speech. He spoke passionately about
the role of Catholic health ministries and the
significance of being present with our patients
and caring for them in body, mind, and spirit.
He brought special attention to caring for the
spiritual needs of the dying patient.
FATHER KLIMEK ALSO RECEIVED
a standing ovation as he discussed the
significance of pastoral care throughout Catholic
health institutions. He reminded the audience that
even as a non-revenue producing department,
the work done by pastoral care departments
truly embody the mission intended by the Sisters
through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The sculpture, “The Advocates,” commemorates the story of healing as described in Luke
5:18-26. The scripture tells of a paralytic man being lowered through the roof by friends who are
determined to do whatever is necessary to present him to Jesus, in the belief that Jesus will heal
him. It was created for the association by sculptor Clay Enoch.

Quality &
Commitment
Regional Cancer Center Reaccredited by CoC
THE REGIONAL CANCER CENTER BY SACRED HEART HOSPITAL
AND MARSHFIELD CLINIC RECENTLY RECEIVED A
THREE-YEAR, RENEWED ACCREDITATION FROM THE
AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS COMMISSION ON
CANCER (COC). THE ACCREDITATION WAS WITH
COMMENDATION AND SIGNIFIED THAT THE REGIONAL
CANCER CENTER’S PROGRAM HAD ACHIEVED GOLD
STATUS WITH THE COC.
During the visit, the CoC surveyor complimented the center’s comprehensive care, the interaction
of the multi-disciplinary care team and the commitment of the staff to the patients.
Applying for and maintaining CoC accreditation is a voluntary commitment by a cancer program
that ensures its patients will have access to the full scope of services required to diagnose, treat,
rehabilitate, and support patients with cancer and their families.
“This level of accreditation reflects the dedication of Sacred Heart Hospital and the team of
physicians, nurses, therapists, and other professionals who make up the cancer program,” said
David Schifeling, MD, Medical Oncologist with Marshfield Clinic.
“Treating the whole person while treating their cancer is certainly a collaborative effort,” said
Mark Steinmetz, MD, Radiation Oncologist with OakLeaf Medical Network. “We are honored to
receive this renewed accreditation, which signifies the high level of care our patients received at
Sacred Heart.”
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of
professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer
patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of
comprehensive, quality care. Its membership includes Fellows of the American College of
Surgeons and 42 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of cancer care.
“This level of accreditation reflects the dedication of Sacred
Heart Hospital and the team of physicians, nurses, therapists,
and other professionals who make up the cancer program.”
CELEBRATING
Survivors
Regional Cancer Center and
Marshfield Clinic Host 19th
Annual Cancer Survivor Day
On June 2, over 60 cancer survivors and their
family members gathered in Sacred Heart
Hospital’s Community Auditorium for the
19th Annual Cancer Survivors Day. After the
traditional blessing of a Remembrance Tree by
Moira Kneer, Community Outreach Coordinator,
Sacred Heart Hospital, guests dined on a
delicious buffet prepared by the hospital’s
Nutrition Services team.
This year’s entertainment, cancer survivor, Dr.
Stuart Robertshaw, a national speaker and
humorist, is known throughout the nation
as Dr. Humor® (pictured below). He brought
laughter to the group as he discussed his career
of working with the “humor impaired.”
A special thanks to all the volunteers who
helped greet and serve. We are looking forward
to seeing our survivors back again next year.
Meeting Needs and
Reaching
Goals
Friends’ Leadership Council Approves
Purchases of New Equipment
THE FRIENDS OF SACRED HEART HOSPITAL
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL ARE PLEASED TO
ANNOUNCE THAT THEY’VE RECENTLY APPROVED
THE SPENDING OF MORE THAN $631,000
TO IMPROVE EQUIPMENT AND PROGRAMS
THROUGHOUT THE HOSPITAL.
Among their investments are two pieces of equipment for the
hospital’s Physical and Occupational Therapy Departments:
the Bioness Orthosis H200 neuro-rehabilitation system and a
NuStep TRS 4000 Recumbent Cross Trainer.
THE BIONESS H200 is an upper extremity unit designed
to rest over a patient’s hand and forearm, stimulating
muscles to assist with hand movement and grip. At a cost
of more than $12,000, this advanced technology has been
utilized in our rehab unit since 2007. Through highly
controlled electrical stimulation, these tools have allowed our
therapists to effectively and efficiently treat both inpatients
and outpatients who have experienced stroke, neurological
disorders, or who have suffered serious injuries. The new
model maintains a lower-profile and is cordless, which makes
it easier and more convenient to use. Most importantly, it
facilitates greater range of motion and strength of the hand/
arm, which enables the patient to complete daily tasks and
regain their independence.
THE NUSTEP RECUMBENT CROSS TRAINER
has become a gold standard of exercise equipment
for Rehab Centers. As a highly sophisticated exercise
bike, it enables both inpatients and outpatients with
a wide range of ability levels to safely and effectively
exercise both their upper and lower extremities. The
semi-recumbent nature of the NuStep minimizes stress
on joints and the low back while simulating a walking
motion. At a cost of nearly $4,000, this equipment is a
valued addition to the treatment programs for patients
with a wide range of neurological deficits or injuries,
as well as orthopedic patients after their injury and/or
surgery. It is also of great benefit to patients with low
endurance or cardiopulmonary problems, as well as for
general medical and geriatric patients.
AS AN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED
to providing our patients with the most innovative
treatments, technologies, and equipment, Sacred Heart
Hospital would like to thank everyone who contributes
to the Friends of Sacred Heart. It is through your
charitable giving that these purchases and many more
are made possible.

Hospital Hosts 23rd Annual Rehab Reunion
On May 14, Sacred Heart Hospital’s L.E. Phillips
Physical Rehabilitation Center hosted its 23rd annual
Rehab Reunion. Attended by approximately 100
former patients and their families, the event provides
them the opportunity to reconnect and visit with the
nurses, therapists, and physicians who took care
of them — often for weeks or months on end. In
addition, it also allows them to meet and reminisce
with other patients who may have been here at
the same time they were. This year’s theme was a
“Hawaiian Luau,” where each attendee was given a
lei as they enjoyed a buffet and listened to soothing
Hawaiian tunes. Thank you to all who attended!

Walking their Path
Hospital Colleagues Participate in a Mission
Outreach Fellowship Pilgrimage
On May 13, a group of 10 Pilgrims embarked on a wonderful
journey to the Chiara Center in Springfield, IL. Once there they
discovered they were in for an experience of a lifetime! Sacred
Heart and St. Joseph’s Hospitals were equally represented
with 5 participants each. Traveling from Sacred Heart were
Shawn Beck, Carol Green, Nancy Nevinski, Peggy Pendergast,
and Jennifer Reetz. Joining them from St. Joseph were Wayne
Behnke, Anne Martenson, Mary Pomietlo, Gail Sullivan, and
Fr. Frank Corradi.
They each thought they were going to learn about and
participate in the Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach Program.
The goal was to become ambassadors who would promote the
benefits of the effort when they returned home. While those
objectives were met, they also found themselves profoundly
and personally impacted by the whole experience from the
moment they arrived.
The Pilgrims have been inspired to share the experience and
what they learned with all of you. There will be a series of
articles related to this topic that will appear in both hospitals’
upcoming newsletters. Check back for more!
All three book discussions are free of charge and will
take place at The Healing Place, 1010 Oakridge Drive, Eau
Claire. Please call The Healing Place at (715) 717-6028 for
more information and to register.
ORIENTATION STICKERS INTRODUCED FOR NEW COLLEAGUES
Sacred Heart Hospital has recently begun a new practice to help identify and precept new colleagues with the addition
of an Orientation/New Colleague sticker to be placed on their name badge holder. The purpose of this initiative is to
more easily be able to identify new staff members in the effort to help improve the orientation experience.
“As hospital employees, there are so many times that we interact with people in other departments,” said Twyla
Schmidt, RN, CNOR, team lead of the Surgical Services Professional Practice Committee who developed the concept.
“Being able to identify new colleagues should help turn those interactions into teaching moments rather than missed
learning opportunities.”
Most importantly, as a result, new colleagues will gain valuable knowledge and more easily build working
relationships — which in turn should lead to more positive experiences and better outcomes for our patients.

On May 18, Sacred Heart Hospital hosted a special “Yoga Tree”
event in the hospital’s Community Auditorium. The event,
encouraging community members to get fit and be healthy, also
served as a fund raiser to purchase supplies for The Sojourner
BENEFIT UPDATE
Tax-Sheltered Annuity (TSA)
The IRS has announced the new 403(b) Tax-Sheltered Annuity (TSA) maximum
contribution limits effective January 1, (2013) 2012 as follows:
• Maximum elective contribution for a participate under age 50 will be
$17,000 (17,500)
• Maximum elective contribution for a participant who is age 50 or over will
be $22,500. (23,000)
Contributions to a TSA are done through a payroll deduction and are therefore
taken out pre-tax. This feature of a TSA is very beneficial since your contributions
are not seen as income and you may pay less federal tax at the end of the year. A
TSA is also tax deferred during the accumulation phase. This means you will not
pay any taxes on the amount you contribute or the interest earned until you begin
the withdrawal phase. There are two TSA companies available with Sacred Heart
Hospital: Fidelity Investments and VALIC. Sacred Heart’s enrollment forms and
additional information for Fidelity and VALIC are available in People Services.
Spirit is a Sacred Heart Hospital newsletter that appears on the second and fourth Monday of every
month and is available internally on the hospital’s Pillar Boards & Intranet. It is also distributed by
email and mail, and posted under the Media Center link at www.sacredhearteauclaire.org. Please
