Matt Moser.
Matt was born in Milwaukee and
Community Gives Back
Local Organizations Donate Handmade Blankets to Palliative Care Department
Sacred Heart Hospital’s Palliative Care
program offers compassionate end
of life care services to hospitalized
patients with advanced illness or lifethreatening
injury. Since the inception
of the Palliative Care Blanket Program
roughly five years ago, and through
the generosity of the community in
donating blankets, Sacred Heart’s
Palliative Care has been able to gift
approximately 450 blankets to very ill or
dying patients, each year.
To continue that tradition of giving, on
April 16, students from the Chippewa
Valley Technical College Radiography
Imager’s Club and girl scouts from
Altoona delivered handmade blankets to
Sacred Heart Hospital. In honor of both
organizations’ centennial celebrations,
they combined to produce 100 blankets.
80 of the blankets were donated
to Sacred Heart with the remaining
blankets being donated to Mayo Health
System in Eau Claire and Oak Garden’s
Assisted Living in Altoona.
Books for
Babies
CVTC’s Radiography Imager’s Club
“This was a special donation,” commented
Gerry Martinez, Palliative Care Counselor.
“The Radiography students, along with
the girl scouts, demonstrated their
compassion for our patients, but they also
showed how the local community gives
back to Sacred Heart Hospital for all that
it does in maintaining the Hospital Sisters’
mission of service.” To donate blankets
and quilts or to receive more information,
please contact Gerry Martinez or Jeanne
Service at 717-1468.
just had a baby boy.
On April 11, Sacred Heart Hospital’s Maternity Department graciously accepted
a donation of baby books from the Eau Claire Public Library. In recognition of
National Library Week, Penny France, of Friends of the Eau Claire Public Library,
was on site to present “Books for Babies” bags to new mothers. In all, more than
25 “Books for Babies” bags were donated and delivered to new mothers in Sacred
Heart’s Maternity Department. “The families were very happy to receive the books,”
commented Barb Piper, RN, BSN, Director, Maternity, Sacred Heart Hospital. “The
siblings especially enjoyed it because the babies ‘shared’ the books with them.”

Laundry Services Purchases New Piece Folder
Radiology Purchases Three
State-of-the-Art Ultrasound Machines
Sacred Heart Hospital recently made a
$370,000 investment in quality patient care
with the purchase of three new Toshiba Aplio
500 Ultrasound Units. Although these units
are merely replacements for three older
machines from multiple vendors, the Aplio
500 (A5) is the newest and most advanced
ultrasound unit on the market today. First
introduced in November 2011, this system was
engineered for Sonographers with the patient
in mind. In addition to being more ergonomic,
its small, light weight design allows it to be
easily maneuvered for enhanced positioning.
“We’re really excited to have these new units
available for our patients and expecting
mothers,” commented Michael Dillon, BA,
CRA, RT(R), Director, Radiology, Sacred Heart Hospital. “Not only will having all the
same machines increase our staff’s ability to efficiently manage workflow, but it will
greatly improve diagnostic confidence. Most importantly, the enhanced diagnostic
capabilities will ensure our patients receive the correct diagnosis that allows them
to be treated earlier and more effectively; so the new edition to their family can be
born as healthy as possible.”
To enhance efficiency and ensure a quicker turnaround of patient linens, Sacred
Heart’s Laundry Services recently installed a new folding machine. In fact, at a cost
of $67,000, this investment will actually serve as a cost savings measure in the
long run by streamlining processes and adding an additional four items that used
to be folded by hand.
“Since we regionalized the laundry services departments of Sacred Heart and St.
Joseph’s hospitals, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in volume,” said Sandy Storing,
Laundry Team Leader, Sacred Heart Hospital. “This initiative will greatly increase
our efficiency and ability to handle the increased volume.”
Critical Care Nurse Earns
Cardiac Surgery Certification
Dee Dee Bergquist
To provide the communities of
western Wisconsin with the highest
level of trained professionals, Sacred
Heart is proud to have always placed
a strategic emphasis on continuing
education. With that in mind, the
hospital is pleased to announce
that Diana “Dee Dee” Bergquist,
RN, CCRN, CSC, recently earned her
Cardiac Surgery Certification (CSC).
The CSC subspecialty certification
was introduced in 2005 to provide
critical care nurses a unique body
of knowledge necessary for treating
adult patients during the first 48
hours after cardiac surgery.
“Not only did Dee Dee receive her
CSC, but she also recently earned
her CCRN, which is the highest
certification a critical care nurse can
pursue,” commented Kate Nulsen,
Director, Critical Care Center, Sacred
Heart Hospital. “It is through this
type of dedication to quality patient
care that Sacred Heart prides itself;
and I couldn’t be more proud of
her commitment to enhancing her
knowledge and skills to better serve
our patients.”

An ‘Always’ Hospital
Service Tip of the Week
New HCAHPS Survey Pays
for Quality of Care
With publically reported HCAHPS
surveys currently underway,
creating a culture of ‘Always’
has never been more important.
HCAHPS measures our patients’
perception of the consistency
with which we meet their needs;
ensuring that facilities will
be reimbursed based on the
percentage that those needs are
‘Always’ met. ‘Always’ is about
every patient, every department,
every shift, and every day. In an
experience-based survey, patients
must experience excellent care
on all shifts and with every
interaction.
Possible question:
Q. During your hospital stay,
how often was your pain well
controlled?
Possible responses:
A. ALWAYS, Usually,
Sometimes, Never
Construction Update
Exterior Renovations Enhance Safety and Patient Care
Sacred Heart Hospital recently embarked
on a three year, $20 million process to
enhance the patient experience. In addition
to replacing the heating and cooling
induction units in every patient room, this
renovation will also include replacing the
original windows and supports installed
when the hospital was first built in 1964.
Beginning on the North side and ending
on the front of the hospital, this process
will not only completely change the look
of the hospital, but most importantly, it
will enhance safety and create a more
comfortable healing environment for our
patients.
As construction is completed on column
37 of the north wing, the renovated
column will be unveiled in early May as
they transition the project to the room 39
column.
Mission in Motion: Saving Lives Around the World
Hospital Takes Up Collection for Peruvian Orphans
In the effort to better inform our patients
of the benefits of the inevitable noises
associated with construction, all staff
are encouraged to stay updated on
the progress in their area. When asked
about construction noise, colleagues
should reassure patients of the Quiet
Hours (8 pm - 8 am), remind them of the
project’s benefits, and apologize for any
inconveniences.
Throughout the month of May, Sacred Heart Hospital will be hosting a supplies drive for
the LaCrosse Diocesan Orphanage in Lurin, Peru. This July, Marcia Danzinger, Assistant
Director of Sacred Heart’s Short Stay Care Center, will accompany 18 members of local
parishes to the Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II orphanage to deliver much needed supplies and
provide the physical labor necessary to replace their failing water tank. The orphanage
opened its doors in 1985 and provides a loving, faith-filled environment for 64 children to
gain valuable skills, learn to be more responsible, and become productive citizens.
All who can help are encouraged to donate and place the following items into
designated bins located in various departments or by the colleague entrances:
• Crayons/Markers/Pens/Pencils
• Peanut Butter in plastic jars
• Children’s vitamins (cannot be near expiration)
• Neosporin (cannot be near expiration)
• Monetary donations will also be accepted and used for the
water tank project and travel, and should be delivered to
National Volunteer Month
Hospital Celebrates the Commitment of Our Volunteers
On April 17, Sacred Heart Hospital’s
Volunteer Partners hosted their
annual Spring Recognition Luncheon
to acknowledge the efforts of the
many dedicated hospital volunteers.
In addition, it also provided a vehicle
to elect new board members for the
following year.
Over the past year, Sacred Heart’s
Volunteer Partners have performed
over 43,000 hours of service
estimated at more than $900,000.
In recognition of National Healthcare
Volunteer Month throughout April,
Sacred Heart Hospital honors
all hospital volunteers for their
commitment to excellence in
supporting staff toward providing
a superior patient experience for all
who come through our doors.
“The personalized care our
volunteers offer through their daily
commitment to Sacred Heart is truly
appreciated,” said Mary Pengra,
Director, Volunteer Services, Sacred
Heart Hospital.
“I can’t say enough about
how proud I am of their effort
and dedication to the mission
of the Hospital Sisters.”
Earth Day : Spreading Awareness and seeds!
Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect about what you are doing to help protect
the environment. Everyone shares the responsibility to do as much as they can to
preserve the planet’s natural resources today and for future generations. For that
reason, on April 20, Sacred Heart Hospital celebrated Earth Day by encouraging
physicians, colleagues, volunteers and visitors to protect the environment,
reduce carbon footprint, and reduce, reuse and recycle waste. Attendees of the
educational booths were also treated to free seed packets (donated by Botanical
Interests), a special “dirt cake” dessert, and Culligan Water demonstrations and
information.
