BEAT THE FLU BUG
Get your shot!
Dear Colleagues,
This will be our second year requiring all
colleagues receive a flu vaccination. Last year,
93% of our colleagues got a flu shot, which is one
of the most effective ways we can help stem the
spread of this preventable, and too often deadly,
disease.
Free flu vaccination clinics will be offered
beginning September 24 and are scheduled to
conclude by October 31. The process involves a
quick shot to the upper arm and takes only a few
minutes. Schedules and locations for the clinics
will be announced in the coming days, so please
watch for these postings and get vaccinated.
Because we recognize there will be a small
number of colleagues with a medical
contraindication that prevents them from
receiving the vaccine, we will offer a declination
process. The process will be similar to last year
and include the requirement that those who
decline the vaccine must wear a mask at work
when flu activity is reported.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and
for your continued dedication to protecting the
health and well-being of our patients and one
another.
Sincerely,
Julie Manas,
A Place to call home.
Sacred Heart Hospital Receives New
Display Case for Work of Art
On September 7, Sacred Heart Hospital
received its permanent display case for our
volumes of The St. John’s Bible. The display case
was handcrafted by the monks working in the St.
John’s Abbey Woodshop. Built to standards equal
to the volumes they contain, each cabinet takes
215 hours of construction time and 40 hours of
finishing time.
In 1998, Saint John’s Abbey and University in
Collegeville, Minnesota, commissioned renowned
calligrapher Donald Jackson to produce a hand-written, hand-illuminated
Bible— the first of its kind in over 500 years.
In January 2011, a group of local individuals began to champion an effort to
acquire a Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible for the Chippewa Valley
community. At a cost of $140,000, the Heritage Edition is a seven-volume,
full-size fine art reproduction of the original, and is limited to only 299 signed
and numbered sets in the world.
The benefactors asked Sacred Heart and Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau
Claire to jointly receive The St. John’s Bible as a gift to the community, and
prominently display them in each institution. Since September 2011, volumes
of the Bible have been on display in Sacred Heart’s Welcoming Atrium, just
outside the Center for Spiritual Care office.
will be developing a book on Father Klimek’s
outstanding and dedicated pastoral ministry. If
you would like to submit a special
Father Klimek for possible inclusion in
the book, please send to:
Mary Ellen Bliss, Center for Spiritual
Care, Sacred Heart Hospital; or
Colleague Earns “Courage is Contagious” Award from Local Magazine
As some of you may know, Nancy Nevinski, a
coding specialist in Sacred Heart’s Health
Information Management Department, has
run into some rough patches over the last
year. In addition to courageously battling
cancer and chemotherapy, she sadly lost
her husband to illness this past March.
With that in mind, Nancy’s co-worker, Jan McIntyre,
nominated her for The Courage is Contagious Project
sponsored by 5ive For Women magazine. As a result, Nancy
was selected to attend a four-day, all expenses paid yoga,
meditation, hiking and kayaking retreat this month in
Madeline Island.
Nancy said, “The anticipation of this trip has kept my spirits up and
given me something to look forward to during a pretty dark time.
I would just like to thank Jan for thinking to do this for me, and
to thank all of my colleagues and leadership at the hospital
for demonstrating their standards by showing their caring and
encouragement through all of this. I have been blessed.”
Leader of Choice
for Sacred Heart Hospital
Julie Manas, President & CEO, Sacred Heart Hospital, and President of HSHS Division
(Western Wisconsin), was recently featured in two August publications by Becker’s
Hospital Review magazine.
“CEO Julie Manas: Leader of Choice for Sacred Heart Hospital”
In the article, Julie discusses how her goals for Sacred Heart include being in the top
percentile for performance in quality, safety and service. She says, “Doing the right
things clinically for our patients, providing care in a safe and accurate manner and
creating a positive patient and family experience [are my goals]. We’d like to be the
place of choice for our patients, physicians and colleagues/employees.”
“Ideas Into Action: 3 Hospital CEOs Talk Strategy Going Into 2013”
In this article, Julie was selected as one of three CEOs of innovative health systems to share some of their biggest strategic ideas going
into 2013 and how those ideas are actually being put into action. She says, “One of the things we have that is relatively unique is we’re
working with a county hospital [Rusk County Memorial Hospital & Nursing Home in Ladysmith, Wis.] that wants to get out of the
hospital business. Through a partnership with Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic, we are working to establish a joint venture to acquire and run
this hospital with the Marshfield physician group. We’re in the due diligence phase right now. A partnership with a physician group in
a joint venture to take over a county hospital — it makes a lot of strategic sense, and it could be a really unique, integrated, all-service
campus. It’s a win for the community.”
An ‘Always’ Hospital Service Tip of the Week
New HCAHPS Survey Pays for Quality of Care
With publically reported HCAHPS surveys currently underway, creating a culture of
‘Always’ has never been more important. HCAHPS measures our patients’ perception of
the consistency with which we meet their needs; ensuring that facilities will be reimbursed
based on the percentage that those needs are ‘Always’ met. ‘Always’ is about every patient,
every department, every shift, and every day. In an experience-based survey, patients must
experience excellent care on all shifts and with every interaction.
HCAHPS question:
Q. During this hospital stay, how often
did nurses listen carefully to you?
Available responses:
A. ALWAYS, Usually, Sometimes,
Never

IT’S A Blessing
On Sunday, October 7, Sacred Heart Hospital will
host its annual “Blessing of the Animals.”
The service will take place at 1 pm on the west lawn of the
hospital. Father Edmund Klimek, Senior Chaplain at Sacred Heart
Hospital, will offer the blessing during a brief prayer service.
St. Francis of Assisi, The Patron Saint
of Sacred Heart, was
a man who served, administered
to and spent his life caring for the
poor, the under-served and the
downtrodden. His love of all God’s
creatures also extended to animals.
It is in honor of this love and in the
spirit of this great saint that we offer
this unique, ecumenical event. The
event is free and open to the public.
Helping KIDS Be KIDS
Children today face many major life transitions
– illness or death of a parent, sibling or other
significant person in their life; divorce of parents; a
parent who is recently unemployed; or a parent who
is on military deployment.
For children facing difficult times, The Healing Place: A Center for Life’s
Journeys at Sacred Heart Hospital has developed a new program to help
give kids a chance to just be kids.
The free program, called Responders for Kids, is designed to build
camaraderie and confidence in children while providing a positive
influence. A group of volunteers comprised of Eau Claire Firefighters and
a counselor from The Healing Place will join kids once a month for a fun
day of activities, including anything from hiking to bowling to fishing to
attending a sports event.
“When my husband retired from the Eau Claire Fire Department, he was
inspired by the work I do and wanted to contribute in some way,” said
Jane Hilgart-Nessel, Healing Place counselor. “His fellow firefighters
hopped on board to volunteer their time, providing a safe environment
for kids to just be kids.”
The first activity will take place October 6, but pre-registration is
required by September 24. A sack lunch will be provided by Sacred
Heart Hospital. Professional counselors, social workers,
or teachers can refer a child they believe will benefit from
this program. Parents must sign a permission slip
so that their child can participate.
For more information, or to refer
a child to this program, call The
Healing Place at 715-717-6028.
SUPPORT
when it is needed most
5-Cardiology Hosts School Supply Drive
for Local Elementary Students
Each year, the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital’s
5-Cardiology/PCU Department organizes a school supply
drive to ensure that students from a local school have the
supplies needed for a successful year. The support shown
to this year’s cause was nothing short of amazing, as the
department was able to collect several hundred items.
“This year, Roosevelt Elementary School in Eau Claire
expressed a need; and as part of our
Franciscan mission, the staff
and many others throughout
the hospital responded
with an abundance of
donations,” said Darla
Derks, RN, PCCN, CSC,
Director of Cardiology
at Sacred Heart
Hospital. “We are truly
blessed with a team
and reaches out to the
community.”
Thank you to everyone who contributed
to this wonderful cause!

Construction Update
Exterior Renovations Enhance Safety & Patient Care
Last February, Sacred Heart Hospital embarked on a three year, $20 million process
to enhance the patient experience. In addition to replacing the heating and cooling induction
units in every patient room, this renovation will also include replacing the original windows
and supports installed when the hospital was first built in 1964. Beginning on the North side
and ending on the front of the hospital, this process will not only completely change the look
of the hospital, but most importantly, it will enhance safety and create a more comfortable
healing environment for our patients.
Update:
Construction has been completed on the hospital’s North West wing, where all renovated
rooms have been transitioned back for patient occupancy. Construction has now moved to the
South end of the North East wing, where crews are currently working on the Medicine rooms
and staff area columns.
In the effort to better inform
our patients of the benefits
of the inevitable noises
associated with construction,
all staff are encouraged to stay
updated on the progress in
their area. When asked about
construction noise, colleagues
should reassure patients of the
Quiet Hours (8 pm - 8 am),
remind them of the project’s
benefits, and apologize for any
inconveniences.
Leadership Must Complete Halogen Appraisals by
September 30
As you should know, Sacred Heart Hospital recently joined all other HSHS affiliates
by implementing a new paperless, online process for annual colleague performance
reviews for Fiscal Year 2013. The new process requires managers to evaluate the
performance of all colleagues and complete all annual reviews by September 30.
We believe this new review process will allow us to better recognize and reward
colleagues for their dedication and commitment to our Franciscan healing ministry.
If you have any questions on this process, please contact your supervisor or the
People Services Department at 715-717-4246.
