Spring<br />
<strong>Partnership</strong> Success in Hounslow<br />
<strong>Surrey</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Borders</strong> wins the contract to provide<br />
drug <strong>and</strong> alcohol services in the borough <strong>of</strong><br />
Hounslow, in partnership with leading charity<br />
Cranstoun. Launched on 1 April <strong>2012</strong> as the<br />
iHEAR <strong>Partnership</strong>, the service <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
community, prison in-reach <strong>and</strong> criminal justice<br />
drug <strong>and</strong> alcohol services under a single<br />
contract with a targeted outreach programme.<br />

Nurses, support workers, volunteers <strong>and</strong> the IT<br />
Team are among dedicated individuals <strong>and</strong><br />
teams who pick up well deserved awards at our<br />
staff recognition awards scheme ceremony.<br />

Rehabilitation Service Enhancements<br />
An integrated mental health rehabilitation<br />
service opens in Reigate. Margaret Laurie<br />
House, a 12-bedded unit for adults recovering<br />
from mental ill-health, focuses on providing<br />
structured rehabilitation <strong>and</strong> recovery to<br />
support people to go on to live more<br />
independently in the community.<br />
Steps Towards New Hospital<br />
Adult mental health inpatient wards <strong>and</strong> the<br />
Home Treatment Team based at Farnham Road<br />
Hospital in Guildford move temporarily to St<br />
Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey to make way for the<br />
hospital’s redevelopment. The Noel Lavin Unit is<br />
due to be demolished in 2013 <strong>and</strong> replaced<br />
with the Trust’s first purpose-built adult mental<br />
health wards.<br />
Learning Disability Programme Closes<br />
A 10-year programme to transfer over 70 <strong>NHS</strong><br />
learning disability homes <strong>and</strong> day centres to<br />
independent or voluntary providers successfully<br />
concludes. The move ensures people receive<br />
more personalised care <strong>and</strong> support.<br />
Boost for Older Adult Services<br />
Enhanced older adult community mental health<br />
services are introduced across <strong>Surrey</strong> <strong>and</strong> North<br />
East Hampshire to give personalised support to<br />
families <strong>and</strong> those with dementia <strong>and</strong><br />
functional illnesses such as depression.<br />
Electronic Risk Logging<br />
New Datix s<strong>of</strong>tware is installed to enable all<br />
staff to log incidents <strong>and</strong> risks electronically<br />
streamlining notifications <strong>and</strong> reporting.
Summer<br />
Hello to Specialist Commissioning<br />
For the first time in the Trust’s history we take<br />
on a commissioning role, providing specialist<br />
mental health commissioning for <strong>Surrey</strong>. This<br />
allows us to consider the full range <strong>of</strong> mental<br />
health services needed for the local population.<br />
Protecting Young Carers<br />
Fiona Edwards, Chief Executive, signs a Young<br />
Carers Protocol with <strong>Surrey</strong> County Council to<br />
help identify youngsters under the age <strong>of</strong> 18<br />
who care for a friend or relative so we can<br />
ensure they are given the right support.<br />
Speaking Out<br />
As part <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> mental health awareness<br />
podcasts developed with Eagle Radio, staff <strong>and</strong><br />
people who use services talk about how health<br />
psychology services can help individuals<br />
manage well with chronic pain.<br />
Enabling Independence Launch<br />
The Enabling Independence Service launches to<br />
provide people who use adult community<br />
mental health services with one to one,<br />
recovery focused support. The partnership<br />
service provided through <strong>Surrey</strong> County Council<br />
enhances the county-wide introduction <strong>of</strong><br />
personal budgets at the start <strong>of</strong> the year so<br />
people can choose the type <strong>of</strong> support that will<br />
help them best.<br />

Prison in-reach mental health team members<br />
celebrate their well earned title <strong>of</strong> External<br />
Provider <strong>of</strong> the Year in HMP Coldingley’s annual<br />
awards - for the second year running.<br />

Mind the Hunger Gap<br />
<strong>Surrey</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Borders</strong> <strong>Partnership</strong> signs up to the<br />
Mind the Hunger Gap campaign from the British<br />
Dietetic Association to help stamp out<br />
malnutrition for dementia sufferers. Staff are<br />
trained to undertake nutritional screening as<br />
part <strong>of</strong> health care assessments.<br />
Joined-up Care Goes Virtual<br />
Our partnership <strong>of</strong> the Virtual Ward programme<br />
is realised through mental health practitioners<br />
joining community healthcare <strong>and</strong> acute<br />
hospital pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to provide care at home<br />
to people with complex needs. The service<br />
supports people with long term conditions to<br />
improve their wellbeing <strong>and</strong> reduce hospital<br />
admissions.<br />

Autumn<br />
Olympic Fever Grips the Trust<br />
Roger Black passes through<br />
Godalming<br />
Planning Granted for New Unit<br />
T<strong>and</strong>ridge District Council approve our planning<br />
application to develop a state <strong>of</strong> the art<br />
assessment <strong>and</strong> treatment centre for people<br />
with learning disabilities in East <strong>Surrey</strong>. Work on<br />
the seven-bedded unit will commence in<br />
January 2013. This will include an internal<br />
courtyard garden, as illustrated below.<br />
Everyone gets into the spirit <strong>of</strong> the Olympic <strong>and</strong><br />
Paralympic Games from receiving the Olympic<br />
Torch bearers, hosting our own Olympic Fun<br />
Day <strong>and</strong> visiting the Games with people who<br />
use services through to completing a mosaic at<br />
Guildford cathedral <strong>and</strong> volunteering at the<br />
opening ceremony. We even had our own<br />
challenge to beat the Olympic Torch on its<br />
8,000 mile journey around the UK by<br />
collectively completing 8,000 miles <strong>of</strong> running,<br />
swimming, walking <strong>and</strong> rowing – <strong>and</strong> we did it!<br />
Learning Disability Nurses for GPs<br />
Four nurses specialising in learning disabilities<br />
are recruited from new funding to help <strong>Surrey</strong><br />
GPs identify people who have a learning<br />
disability <strong>and</strong> provide them with additional<br />
support. The service will ensure people with a<br />
learning disability get the help they need to<br />
improve wellbeing.<br />
Walkers Raise Awareness & Funds<br />
Over 120 people converge on Priory Park in<br />
Reigate as part <strong>of</strong> the Trust’s Get Moving<br />
campaign to raise awareness <strong>of</strong> how being<br />
more active can have a positive effect on<br />
mental health. The event also raises money for<br />
sports equipment <strong>and</strong> activity to improve the<br />
wellbeing <strong>of</strong> people with mental illness <strong>and</strong><br />
learning disabilities <strong>and</strong> this year has enabled<br />
£4k in grants to go to Trust teams.<br />
Green Light from CQC Inspections<br />
The Care Quality Commission declares another<br />
three <strong>of</strong> our residential learning disability<br />
services fully compliant with essential st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
<strong>of</strong> quality <strong>and</strong> safety following unannounced<br />
visits. Inspectors visiting The Shieling in Epsom<br />
found “The health <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> people is<br />
constantly promoted, reviewed <strong>and</strong> audited”.
Winter<br />
25 Years <strong>of</strong> Respite<br />
Kingscr<strong>of</strong>t respite care home in Staines<br />
celebrates its 25 th anniversary <strong>of</strong> providing a<br />
home from home for people with learning<br />
disabilities. Over 300 people have stayed at the<br />
home since it opened, giving families a break<br />
from full-time caring in some instances.<br />

‘Excellent’ Says Royal College<br />
Mental health inpatient services in Epsom are<br />
rated excellent by the Royal College <strong>of</strong><br />
Psychiatrists under the Accreditation for<br />
Inpatient Mental Health Services (AIMS)<br />
scheme, scoring well on all 142 st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />
measured.<br />
Memory services for West Elmbridge <strong>and</strong><br />
Runnymede, providing assessment <strong>and</strong><br />
treatment for people with dementia, are rated<br />
excellent under the Memory Services<br />
Accreditation Programme also run by the Royal<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Psychiatrists.<br />
Leading the Way in Nurse Prescribing<br />
The Trust’s nurse consultant for substance<br />
misuse services, Mike Flanagan, organises a<br />
national substance misuse non-medical<br />
prescribing forum conference for 200 delegates<br />
as part <strong>of</strong> his work as the forum chair.<br />
Integrated Working Agreement<br />
Fiona Edwards signs an agreement with <strong>Surrey</strong><br />
County Council – this time with Michael<br />
Gosling, Cabinet Lead for Social Care <strong>and</strong> Health<br />
– to firm up arrangements for social workers to<br />
work alongside mental health staff within our<br />
community teams. People who use services<br />
benefit from receiving health <strong>and</strong> social care<br />
from pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in integrated teams.<br />
Young People’s Service Develops App<br />
People who use services <strong>and</strong> staff from the<br />
Early Intervention in Psychosis Service launch a<br />
smart phone app following almost a year <strong>of</strong><br />
development. The self help tool allows people<br />
to record their medication <strong>and</strong> rate their mood<br />
to improve wellbeing.<br />
IAPT Services Tender Award<br />
We are awarded qualified provider status for<br />
Improving Access to Psychological Therapies<br />
Services across <strong>Surrey</strong> in partnership with Priory<br />
Group. Staff are being recruited <strong>and</strong> trained<br />
ready for the service launch in April 2013.<br />
