Get Moving Grant Results Trust teams have applied for funding grants of up to £500 under the Get Moving Grants scheme. The grants are for sports equipment and activities to improve the physical and mental health of people who use our services. The judging panel, which included Non Executive Directors and Foundation Trust Governors, scored the entries independently. The points were then compiled and the nine top scoring entries have each been allocated funding. The scheme was funded through the Get Moving Walk 4 Life campaign, a series of sponsored walks (see page 8 for details of this year’s event). This is so that they are given the right support. The agreement sets out which agencies are responsible for identifying the carers – to help ensure young people are supported and that services work in partnership. This is particularly relevant when an adult is being seen by mental health services because they may be too unwell to highlight that a young person is in a caring role – and young people may miss out on accessing support they are entitled to. Chief Executive Fiona Edwards signed the agreement with Nick Wilson, Strategic Director for Children, Schools and Families at Surrey County Council, to encourage better partnership working and improved services for our local community. 4 | involve Issue 12 Summer 2012
Learning disability inpatient services compliant says national report A national report has declared three of our inpatient services compliant with the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) essential standards of quality and safety. The CQC, which regulates health and social care in England, performed unannounced inspections between February and May this year, looking at two standards: ‘Care and Welfare’ and ‘Safeguarding Adults from Abuse’. The services they inspected were Farmfield in Charlwood, Fairmead in Staines and Oaklands in Caterham. No concerns were reported at Oaklands. One minor concern was noted at Farmfield and two minor concerns reported at Fairmead. Jo Young, director of quality and nursing, said: “I am delighted that all our services were declared compliant and that Oaklands in particular was given a completely clean bill of health - putting it in the top 24% of units in the country. We have already taken action to address the minor concerns and I would like to congratulate the three teams for their continued hard work and achievements.” The inspections were ordered across the country after a BBC Panorama investigation found residents at Winterbourne View, a private hospital near Bristol, were being subjected to beatings. Nationally just over half of all 145 services inspected were found to be compliant. The inspectors had either moderate or major concerns at all of the remaining services they visited and concluded that these failings left vulnerable people at risk of abuse or neglect. The CQC found that NHS locations were twice as likely to be compliant as private hospitals, with 33% of independent providers meeting the standards compared with 68% of those run by the state.
