Chairman’s View Welcome to the Summer issue of Involve, the newsletter for our Foundation Trust members. For the first and probably last time in living history, the Olympics and Paralympics are being held on home soil this Summer. And as the torchbearers have taken the Olympic flame past a number of Trust sites this July – including Berkeley House in Godalming and Loddon Alliance in Basingstoke (see our service spotlight on page 7), it brings closer to home the incredible achievements and sacrifices that people in our communities, as well as Olympic athletes, make for the causes they are dedicated to and passionate about. Our occupational therapists, in their first professional conference (see page 3), heard the inspiring story of paralympian skier Talen Skeels-Piggins and how his motivation to compete in the Winter Olympics helped him cope with the mental distress of being paralysed. His message was that we can all set ourselves personal goals, whether that be taking part in voluntary work (see the work of our volunteers on page 3), being more involved in the community (see our Members Day on page 8) or taking up a new activity (see the Art Without Limitations exhibition on page 8). Our Get Moving sponsored walk events promote the link between physical activity and mental wellbeing. So far three annual events have funded over £4,500 of sports equipment and activities for our services (see page 5 for the grants awarded so far). And applications are now open for the 2012 event. Of course you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to take part so why not join us to celebrate World Mental Health Day this October? Or if you would like a challenge, you could sign up for the 5K run we’ve introduced for the first time this year (see page 8 for more details).
