Trust nurses
visit No.10
Dedicated nurses from Surrey and Borders
Partnership have attended a Downing Street
reception.
Nurse Consultant Phil Boulter
and youth service Team Leader
Sarah Amani were among
around 50 nurses invited in
recognition of their contribution
to advancing nursing knowledge
and leading new developments.
At the event they
rubbed shoulders
with leading
nurses from across the country
and politicians such as the
Prime Minister, David Cameron,
and Health Secretary Andrew
Lansley.
Sarah Amani (second from right)
As well as managing the
smooth-running of their busy
services, both nurses have been
involved in several pioneering
projects to improve access to
services for minority groups.
Phil (pictured left) is the Trust’s
professional lead for learning
disability nursing across Surrey
and North East Hampshire. Sarah
meanwhile manages an Early
Intervention in Psychosis Service
in Aldershot.
They are also both involved in
regional projects. Phil leads the
South East Health Quality Forum,
which shares and promotes best
practice within learning disability
services. Sarah is the NHS South
Chairman’s View
Welcome to the Summer
issue of Involve, the
newsletter for our
Foundation Trust members.
For the first and probably
last time in living history, the
Olympics and Paralympics are
being held on home soil this
Summer.
And as the torchbearers have
taken the Olympic flame past a
number of Trust sites this July
– including Berkeley House in
Godalming and Loddon Alliance
in Basingstoke (see our service
spotlight on page 7), it brings
closer to home the incredible
achievements and sacrifices that
people in our communities, as
well as Olympic athletes, make
for the causes they are dedicated
to and passionate about.
Our occupational therapists, in
their first professional conference
(see page 3), heard the inspiring
story of paralympian skier Talen
Skeels-Piggins and how his
motivation to compete in the
Winter Olympics helped him cope
with the mental distress of being
paralysed. His message was that
we can all set ourselves personal
goals, whether that be taking
part in voluntary work (see the
work of our volunteers on page
3), being more involved in the
community (see our Members
Day on page 8) or taking up a
new activity (see the Art Without
Limitations exhibition on page 8).
Our Get Moving sponsored walk
events promote the link between
physical activity and mental
wellbeing. So far three annual
events have funded over £4,500
of sports equipment and activities
for our services (see page 5 for
the grants awarded so far).
And applications are now open
for the 2012 event. Of course
you don’t have to be an Olympic
athlete to take part so why not
join us to celebrate World Mental
Health Day this October? Or if
you would like a challenge, you
could sign up for the 5K run
we’ve introduced for the first
time this year (see page 8 for
more details).
Best wishes
News Highlights
Get Moving Grant Results
Trust teams have applied
for funding grants of up to
£500 under the Get Moving
Grants scheme.
The grants are for sports
equipment and activities to
improve the physical and mental
health of people who use our
services.
The judging panel, which
included Non Executive Directors
and Foundation Trust Governors,
scored the entries independently.
The points were then compiled
and the nine top scoring entries
have each been allocated
The scheme was funded through
the Get Moving Walk 4 Life
campaign, a series of sponsored
walks (see page 8 for details of
Agreement
to protect
young carers
A Young Carers Protocol
has been developed with
Surrey County Council to
help identify youngsters
under the age of 18 who
care for a friend or relative.
This is so that they are given the
right support.
The agreement sets out which
agencies are responsible for
identifying the carers – to
help ensure young people are
supported and that services work
in partnership.
This is particularly relevant when
an adult is being seen by mental
health services because they may
be too unwell to highlight that a
young person is in a caring role –
and young people may miss out
on accessing support they are
entitled to.
Chief Executive Fiona Edwards
signed the agreement with Nick
Wilson, Strategic Director for
Children, Schools and Families
at Surrey County Council, to
encourage better partnership
working and improved services
for our local community.
Learning disability inpatient services
compliant says national report
A national report has declared three of
our inpatient services compliant with the
Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) essential
standards of quality and safety.
The CQC, which regulates health and social care
in England, performed unannounced inspections
between February and May this year, looking
at two standards: ‘Care and Welfare’ and
‘Safeguarding Adults from
Abuse’.
The services they inspected
were Farmfield in Charlwood,
Fairmead in Staines and
Oaklands in Caterham. No
concerns were reported at Oaklands. One minor
concern was noted at Farmfield and two minor
concerns reported at Fairmead.
Jo Young, director of quality and nursing, said: “I
am delighted that all our services were declared
compliant and that Oaklands in particular was
given a completely clean bill of health - putting it
in the top 24% of units in the country. We have
already taken action to address the minor concerns
and I would like to congratulate the three teams
for their continued hard work and achievements.”
The inspections were ordered across the country
after a BBC Panorama investigation found
residents at Winterbourne View, a private hospital
near Bristol, were being subjected to beatings.
Nationally just over half of
all 145 services inspected
were found to be compliant.
The inspectors had either
moderate or major concerns
at all of the remaining services
they visited and concluded
that these failings left vulnerable people at risk of
abuse or neglect.
The CQC found that NHS locations were twice
as likely to be compliant as private hospitals,
with 33% of independent providers meeting the
standards compared with 68% of those run by the
state.
Governor Focus
Name: David Muir
Constituency: People
Who Use Services,
Learning Disabilities
Why did you want
to be a Governor?
To try and help
people who use
learning disability
services
What areas of Trust business interest you
the most?
I am interested in day care for people with learning
disabilities and improving services for people
How do you think Governors can help bring
about quality improvements?
By ensuring that the Trust makes information
accessible for everyone, and by listening to
members and making others aware of what needs
to improve.
What do you hope to achieve as a Governor?
Making our voices heard so that things can
improve for people who use services. I am also
very keen on getting more people with a learning
disability to become members of the Foundation
Trust.
All About Me:
Lalita Haurdhan
With a background in learning disability services, Lalita
Haurdhan is passionate about providing person-centred
care which values people as individuals. She is now
applying this approach within services for older people
with dementia.
Lalita joined the Meadows
in West Park last year as the
Deputy Ward Manager for
Bluebell Wards 1 and 2.
These are two separate wards for
men and women, each providing
assessment and treatment for
people with dementia.
Until last year, Lalita was deputy
team leader for a campus of
learning disability care homes
at Ethel Bailey Close in Epsom.
She is now keen to use the skillset
and expertise she developed
there to bring a new dimension
to older adult services.
People are admitted to Bluebell
wards for assessment because
they show signs of dementia
and are unable to cope with
daily living activities. As a result,
they may also demonstrate
challenging behaviour.
“Having worked in learning
disability services, I can
see some similarities in the
reasons behind behaviour
that might seem unsettled or
confrontational – both in people
with a learning disability and
in dementia sufferers – such
as boredom, frustration, an
inability to communicate or an
inability to make a decision.
This unpredictable behaviour
can often be interpreted as
challenging.“ she says.
“We approach this by finding
out what activities people
like, what they dislike, as well
as what they used to do and
encourage them to record this
information in a ‘This is Me
Passport’. This is a really good
tool which helps us to support
people’s emotional and social
needs as well as their mental and
physical requirements.”
Since January 2010, Lalita has
also introduced a bi-monthly
social and entertainment
function in the unit’s core
lounge where patients, families
and carers spend time away
from the ward and get to meet
each other. The events include
music and enable patients to
participate – with singing if
that’s what they like to do.
Plans were also put in place
Kenneth (centre) celebrates his
birthday with his family at the
social event
Lalita Haurdhan
recently to enable one patient
to watch his son’s wedding
ceremony via the internet (as it
took place in America) and to
have time away from the ward
to attend the local reception,
accompanied by two members
of staff. Lalita says: “Mr
Anderson was fully supported
and attending his son’s wedding
reception made this special day a
very memorable one.”
Service Spotlight: Loddon Alliance
What is this service?
Loddon Alliance provides a specialist social
care service, known as supported living.
This service supports adults with complex
needs in their own home regardless of
whether they live with their family, on
their own or are sharing with others.
We provide person-centred services to
enable people to live as independently as
possible. Support may involve personal
care, addressing health needs, meal
preparation, activities, developing new
skills and social networks: but all ensuring
that the person is empowered to take the
lead as much as possible.
We assist people with moving from
inpatient services into their own home and can
provide shorter flexible sessions, focusing on a
specific area, for the more independent.
The service’s main office (Corbiere House) and
the majority of its services are in Basingstoke,
Hampshire.
Who uses this service?
We support around 60 people in North and East
Hampshire and West Surrey who either have a
learning disability, physical disability, autism and
complex needs, mental ill-health or combination of
these conditions.
Why is this needed?
Over the last ten years the Government’s Valuing
People reports have emphasised the need for
people with learning disabilities to have a range of
housing options, including the option of living in
their own accommodation.
Supported living services recognise people’s
individuality and their right to live the life they
choose. They enable people to make choices
about their housing and lifestyle so they can
live as regular citizens, with the same rights and
responsibilities as anyone else.
Who works here?
Loddon is divided into four locality teams. Each
team contains a small group of around 25
experienced, trained support workers and senior
support workers, whose skills and training matches
the specific needs of the people they support.
Adults with learning disabilities are employed as
part of the management team to make sure that
people who use the services are fully involved in
how they are run.
The operational management team all have
significant experience of working in and managing
services for people with learning disabilities.
What’s the future?
We continue to provide a significant number of
services in North Hampshire, through:
• Individual domiciliary care contracts with the
local authority
• Our contract with Hampshire Supporting People
to provide tenancy-related support
• Private contracts with individuals who pay for
their own support, often with a personalised
budget or direct payment
Stronger links are being developed between the
Hampshire services and with Community Learning
Disability Teams across Surrey, and we are now
receiving expressions of interest and referrals from
health professionals.
