CHAPTER 1
PROJECT BACKGROUND

District Watershed Development Unit
HISTORY – DAHOD
Dahod District, also know as Dohad District, is located in Gujarat state in wastern India. The city of Dahod is the district's administrative headquarters. The district
has an area of 3,642 KM2, and a population of 1, 636, 433 (2001 census), with a population density of 449 persons per KM2. Dahod District was created on 2nd
October, 1997, and was formerly part of Panchmahal District. It's territory mostly consists of two
former Princely State, namely Baria (Devgadh) and Sanjeli in addition to Fatepura Taluka of Sunth
(Pampur) State, along with the two "eastern mahals" of Dahod and Jhalod from the former
Panchmahals. It was 9.55% urban as of 2001 census.
DAHOD
The district is bounded by Panchmahal District to the west, Vadodara District to the south,
Jhabua District and Alirajpur District of Madhya Pradesh State to the east and southeast
respectively, and Banswara District of Rajasthan State to the north and northeast. The population
of the district is mostly rural, and a majority of the district's residents are Tribals, mostly Bhils.
Dahod District also has the second largest population of "Dawoodi Bohra" sect of Muslims in
India.
The District of Dahod is further sub-divided into the following Talukas (Tehsils):-
1. Dahod
2. Jhalod
3. Devgadh Baria
4. Garbada
5. Limkheda
6. Fatepura
7. Dhanpur
The actual name is "Dohad", which later got transformed into Dahod. The Mughal Emperor
Aurangzeb was born in a mosque within the fort of Dahod. There is a government polytechnic
college since 1963 and it was started by Indian prime minister Mr. Moraraji Desai and now
government degree engineering college is also there. The degree college is affiliated to Gujarat University.

District Watershed Development Unit
As far as topography of the district is concerned Jhalod and Dahod are in plains. Normal slope is mainly in north of Jhalod and Fatepura Taluka and Steep slope is in
Devgadh Baria, Dhanpur and Limkheda Taluka.
Geologically the Dahod district is composed of Rocks of Aravalli formation of Delhi systems. At some places Limestone and Basalt are exposed. The south, southwest
and southeast part of Garbada, Dhanpur and Devgadh Baria Taluka comprises of metamorphic rocks like Granite, Phyllite, Schist, and Quartzite. The west portion of
Limkheda Taluka is mainly composed of Quartzite rocks and North, Central and Southwest area covering Dahod & Jhalod is composed of Basalt and limestone. Rest
of the area including Fatepura Taluka is composed of Phyllite and Quartzite rocks.
Geohydrologically, the Rocks of Dahod District have low porosity and permeability. In the district the compactness of rock formation increases with depth and
overall yield in aquifers is low. In Dahod District water found at shallow depth i.e. 40 to 50 mts.
Climate
The climate of district is usually hot. This district is considered as rain fed area. The average rain of district is 739 mm. Sometimes rain delays and district has to face
drought. It's very hot during March to June, while from November to February winter prevails in district
PROJECT BACKGROUND
Alindra (IWMP - 5) project is situated in Dhanpur Taluka, of the Dahod District of Gujarat State. The project is a cluster of fifteen micro watersheds i.e., 5E1B8c2k,
5E1B8c2l, 5E1B8c2m, 5E1B8g2d, 5E1B8f3d, 5E1B8f3g, 5E1B8f3h, 5E1B8c2q, 5E1B8a3b, 5E1B8c3a, 5E1B8g2g, 5E1B8g2h, 5E1B8g2j, 5E1B8g1l,
5E1B8g2f. The total project area of the watershed is about 5139.27 ha is proposed to be treated under Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP).
The livelihood of the people of this area is primarily based on rain fed agriculture, labour work, agriculture labour work, and animal husbandry. Mainly the people of
this area are migrating to various cities to earn by doing Labour Work, viz. Agricultural Labour Work, Construction and Small Businesses to Rajkot, Valsad, Surat,
Ahmedabad, etc. places.
There are no irrigation facilities in the designated watershed area. Watershed may help for fodder development which will be helpful for animal husbandry. Due to
less rain fall people had been migrated in various parts of Gujarat. To check the seasonal migration of the people, the main occupation farming is required to be
strengthened.
Area proposed to be treated
Watershed Development Programme is selected on the basis of thirteen parameters namely (1.) Poverty Index, (2.) Percentage of SC/ST, (3.) Actual Wages,
(4.) Percentage of small and marginal farmers, (5.) Ground water status, (6.) Moisture Index, (7.) Area under rainfed agriculture, (8.) Drinking water
situation in the area, (9.) Percentage of degraded land, (10.) Productivity potential of the land, (11.) Continuty of another watershed that has
already developed/treated, (12.) Cluster approach for plain (13.) Cluster approach for hilly terrain. Based on these thirteen parameter a composite
ranking was been given to Zari Khurd watershed project as given in Table No. 2.
The total number of families under BPL is 2239, which is 73.46% of the total households of the village. Hence a score of 7.5 has been given. The percentages of
(Schedule Tribes) STs in the village are about 90.67%, SCs are 8.00% and OBCs are 2.34% to the total population. Hence a score of 10 has been given.
Rain fed agriculture forms the primary occupation of the village due to the fact that ground water is either unavailable or too deep to fetch and hence unfit
for usage. In Alindra project area there are more than 80% farmers are small and marginal hence the score of 10 has been given.
Land and Agriculture
The area is completely dependent on rainfall. The rainfall is highly lacking in amplitude or quality which has resulted in recurrent phenomenon of draught. The
average rainfall of this area is about 976 mm (according to the previous five year data). The rainy days area less than 40, this mismatched diffusion is directing to
runoff of soil every year to the streams and a small streams.
Lack of surface water source and unavailability of ground water has decreased irrigation and drinking water. The average land holding is about 1.5 ha. Lack of
irrigation source forces the majority of these farmers to migrate to ensure their livelihood. That affects directly the demographic profile of the village. The major
crops cultivated in the area are Makai (Maize), Danger (Peddy), Soyaben, Ghau (Wheat), Tuver (Pigean Pea), and Chana (Gram) in the village. If rain is good and
proper irrigation source is available then the farmer can takes rabi crops viz. Wheat, and Gram in good quantity.
The project area has about 584 cows and 459 buffaloes out of which majority are local breed; there are 1916 bullock, 1600 Goats, 953 other animals. Majority of
Adivasi community depends on Goat, Cow, and Buffaloes rearing for their livelihood. Lack of rain and surface water has reduced the fodder and pasture area for
their animals. This leads to heavy migration to other parts of the state with their family members and due to this animal husbandry is poor. The productivity of the
milching animals is too low.
Makai, Dangar (Rice), Soyaben, Tuver, Ghau (Wheat), Chana (Gram), Adad, Magfali, and etc. are the crops in Dhanpur Taluka (Alindra Watershed). Crop details are
well illustrated in Table No. 17 (Kharif, Rabi, and Zaid). Crops area production and productivity are seasonal. In Kharif (Monsoon) season the production of the crop
is good compared to those of other two seasons. In Dhanpur Taluka the 866.83 ha has been used to produce 862914 KG of Makai with the productivity of 1121
KG/Ha, 383.12 ha to produce 309099 KG of Dangar (Rice) with the productivity of 924 KG/Ha, 143.54 ha to produce 122199 KG of Soyaben with the productivity of
862 KG/Ha, 86.69 ha to produce 69336 KG of Tuver with the productivity of 820 KG/Ha, while other crops in 70.23 ha to produce 61522 KG with the productivity of
870 KG/Ha. On the other hand if we talk about the Rabi (Winter) season there are Ghau, Chana, and Tuver as the main crops. The 258.43 ha has been used to
produce 184325 KG of Chana with the productivity of 491 KG/ha, 173.28 ha to produce 156492 KG of Ghau with the productivity of 564 KG/Ha, 44.45 ha to produce
produce 33837 KG of other crops with the productivity of 478 KG/Ha. In Zaid (Summer) season some farmers produces crops like Ghau and Chana only due to the
scarcity of water. In Zaid (Summer) season the production of the crops are the 1.37 ha to produce 643 KG of Makai (Maize) with the productivity of 469 KG/Ha, 0.58
ha to produce 532 KG of Tuver (Pulses) with the productivity of 1022.05 KG/Ha. The Large Farmers with the irrigation facilities like Private Bore, or Private Well can
be able to take the crops.
Comparative data of the crop productivity of the area: Project Area v/s District v/s State v/s Country v/s World
DAHOD
The purpose of this study is to provide a comparative
analysis of productivity of Alindra watershed villages with
reference to World, India, Gujarat, Dahod district. "The
term productivity in general means the total output per
unit of factor input. For example land productivity means
output per hector of land. Productivity is an average and
is calculated by dividing the total output of a particular
crop by the total cultivated area under that crop"
Data area made available by the Baseline survey.
The results show that productivity is important not only
because we observe a strong positive relationship with
profits but that the results are suggestive of important
scale that should be taken to improve the production.
This result indicates that Alindra watershed villages have
a very low productivity compared to World, India, Gujarat
and Dahod. The productivity is low not because of the
land is unproductive or the farmer's lack of skills to
managing their crop but it is due to the lack of irrigation
sources availability and scarcity of water.
Maize Production:
Maize is widely cultivated throughout the world, and a greater weightage of maize is produced each year than any other grain. The United States produces almost
half of the world's harvest (~42.5%); other top producing countries include China, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, India and France. The Maize was planted worldwide,
with a yield of 4970.9 kilogram/hectare. In India, it is grown in about 7.59 Million Hectors with a production of 14.71 Million Tonnes and productivity of 1938
KG/Hector. Gujarat alone produces about 57.76 % of the total Maize of our country from 57.44 % of the area with a record productivity of about 1100 KG/Hector.

District Watershed Development Unit
Dahod district has very good productivity 1430 KG/Hector. The Gangardi Faliya, Mandor, Kakad Khila, Kanjeta, Bhanpur (Ka), Navanagar, Kadval, Khadada (Na),
Kalakhunt, Panam, Alindra, Bhuvero and Pipalgota have the productivity of 1204.00, 1024.00, 1348.70, 1152.45, 1196.69, 1399.26, 625.00, 472.16, 1234.02, 518.92,
1428.66, 1024 and 1941.07 KG/Ha respectively.
Dangar Production:
Dangar (Rice) is the seed of the monocot plant Oryza Sativa (Common Names include Asian Rice). As a cereal grain, it is the most important staple food for a large
part of the world's human population especially in East, South, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and the West Indies. It is the grain with the second
highest worldwide production, after maize (corn). World production of rice has risen steadily from about 200 million tonnes of paddy rice in 1960 to over 600
million tonnes in 2004. The world production of Rice according to FAOSTAT in 2005 is 6.31 Lakh Tonnes while in India it is 1.38 Lakh Tonnes. India is the world's
second largest producer of white
rice. Rice is India's preeminent crop,
and is the staple food of the people
Soybean Production:
other major vegetable or grain crop, 5 to 10 times more protein per acre than land set aside for grazing animals to make
milk, and up to 15 times more protein per acre than land set aside for meat production.
The Soybean is a species of legume
native to East Asia. The plant is
classed as an oilseed rather than a
pulse. It is an annual plant that has
been used in China for 5,000 years
to primarily add nitrogen into the
soil as part of crop rotation. Fat-free
(defatted) soybean meal is a
primary, low-cost, source of protein
for animal feeds and most
prepackaged meals; soy vegetable
oil is another valuable product of
processing the soybean crop.
Soybean products such as TVP
(Textured Vegetable Protein), for
example important ingredients in
many meat and dairy analogues.
Soybeans can produce at least twice
as much protein per acre than any

Migration Patter: Migration is during summer season to various parts of the state like Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Dahej and Saurashtra as daily wages
agricultural labors and construction workers. Lack of fodder availability and grazing land for smaller ruminant also forces these farmers to migrate to other places.
Infrastructure Facilities: Alindra watershed is well connected with Dhanpur Taluka with Kaccha and Pucca roads. The village has electricity connecting under
Jyothigram Yojana of Gujarat Government. Nearly 80 per cent of households in the village have their personal electric meters. Since ground water is very deeply and
mostly unavailable so electricity is not used for agricultural purpose. Alindra watershed has thirteen vilalges viz. Gangardi Faliya, Mandor, Kakad Khila, Kanjeta,

Self Help Group
Self Help Groups are motivated, small homogenous groups organized together through credit and thrift activities. Self Help Group initiatives especially for women
help uplift their livelihood. Generally Self Help Groups include landless and poor women.
Before formation of the SHGs, during PRA activities, Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) were held with the women, which came up with the following observations:
(a) Lack of proper credit facilities due to low intervention of formal financial credit institution.
(b) Excessive exploitation of weaker section by money lenders.
(c) Lack of attitude for saving among poor people.
(d) Lack of knowledge on credit and thrift activity and banking.
With a detailed discussion with some of the local NGOs working in the area like Sadguru, Prakruti, Grisarv, GSRDC Vadodara, and Utthan Limkheda, it was planned
to have some capacity building training regarding SHG activities. It was also proposed to have some livelihood activities which will promote women empowerment.
District Watershed Development Unit
DAHOD
Vermi Composting unit for Alindra village
Introduction
The process of composting crop residues using earthworms comprise spreading the agricultural wastes and cow dung in layers as 1.5 m wide and 0.9 m high beds of
required length. Earthworms are introduced in between the layers @ 350 worms per m 3 of bed volume. The beds are maintained at about 40 – 50% moisture
content and a temperature of 20 – 30 o C by sprinkling water over the beds. The earthworms being voracious eaters consume the biodegradable matter and give out
a part of the matter as excreta or vermi-castings. The vermi-casting containing nutrients are rich manure for the plants.
About the worms
Eisenia fetida, Eudrilus eugeniae, and Perionyx excavatius are some of the species for rearing to convert organic wastes into manure. The worms feed on any
biodegradable matter ranging from coir waste to kitchen garbage and vermin composting units are ideally suited to locations / units with generation of considerable
quantities of organic wastes. One earthworm reaching reproductive age of about six week lays one egg capsule (containing 7 embryos) every 7 – 10 days. Three to
seven worms emerge out of each capsule. Thus, the multiplication of worms under optimum growth conditions is very fast. The worms live for about 2 years. Fully
grown worms could be separated and dried in an oven to make ‘worm meal’ which a rich source of protein (70%) is for use ini animal feed.
Location
Alindra watershed villages have lots of animals so it can become good vermi compost center as well as good source of livelihood. Vermi Compost is very suitable for
fruit, flower and vegetable as well as cereal crops. It increases quality and quantity of product in per unit area.
Use
Put lack irrigation arid desert so chemical is not advisable so to increate nutritive value of soil and available farmyard manure vermi compost has more nutrient
compare to other manures and fertilizer so by the use of vermi compost we can reduce use of chemical fertilizer. Vermi compost not only supply nutrient but also
improve quantity of hormones for plant growth, improves the soil structure leading to increase in water and nutrient holding capacities of soil.

District Watershed Development Unit
DAHOD
Components of a Commercial Unit
Sheds
Alindra watershed villages have high temperature in summer so we need a shed structure for vermi compost unit. We can make it by the use of concrete pillars
because this will act as a source of income for those in the village who produce pillars. It will prevent wetting of beds due to rain on a windy day.
While designing the sheds adequate room has to be left around the beds for easy movement of the labour attending to the filling and harvesting the beds.
Vermi-beds
Scientific bed size is 75 cm – 90 cm thick depending on the provision of filter for drainage of excess water. The whole bed area should be above the ground. The bed
should have a uniform height over the entire width to the extent possible to avoid low production owing to low bed volumes. The proper bed width should not be
more than 1.5 m to allow easy access to the centre of the bed.
Land
About 135 square meter of land will be required to set up a vermi compost production unit in Alindra watershed villages. It should have at least 2 to 3 sheds each of
about 180 – 200 sq feet. It should have a good watering arrangement and other equipments as required because moisture is very essential for vermi compost
production. We can take land from Gram Panchayat and it can be taken on lease of at least 10 – 15 years.
Seed Stock
This is very important thing because worms multiply at the rate of 350 worms per m 3 of bed space over a period of 6 month to a year.
Fencing
The entire area has to be fenced to prevent the animals and other unwanted elements. These could be estimated based on the lenght of the periphery of the farm.

District Watershed Development Unit
Water Supply System
We have to maintain always 50% moisture content, there is need to plan for a water source, lifting mechanism and a system of conveying and applying the water to
the vermi-beds. Drippers with round the clock flow arrangement would be quite handy for continuous supply and saving on water. Such a water supply / application
system requiring considerable initial investment, however, reduces the operational costs on hand watering and proves economical in the long run. The cost of these
items depends on the capacity of the unit and the type of water supply chosen.
DAHOD
Machinery
Farm machinery and implements are required for cutting the raw material in small pieces, conveying shredded raw material to the vermi-sheds, loading, unloading,
collection of compost, loosening of beds for aeration, shifting of the compost. Costs of providing necessary implements and the machinery have to be included in
the project cost.
Physical activities to be undertaken under IWMP – 5 (Alindra Watershed)
Entry Point Activity (EPA) EPA activities are certain important works which are in urgent demand of the local community. This helps in establishment of credibility
of Watershed Development Team (WDT). It also acts as a rapport building activity of the village community. A group discussion was conducted with Watershed
Development Committee (WDC) regarding EPA activity; it was conveyed to the amount of Rs. 24.67 Lack was allotted for EPA activity, which was a 4 per cent of
total allocated budget. The villagers discussed various activities which they felt is important but after a brief discussion it was conveyed to them that only those
activities can taken, which revive the common natural resources. It was also taken into priority that there should be an instrument of convergence which will result
in sustainability of activities.
