Licence number (applied for)
Important information for runners: Pre-race
Application information
The race is full and there will be no registration on
the day. If you need to discuss your application,
change any personal details, make changes to your
Business Challenge team membership or discuss
items sent in this pack, please ring the race hotline
on 01782 396113 or e-mail
bristol@frsystems.co.uk.
Are you fit to runbristol
Remember that this event is a competitive race and
is 10k / 6 miles long - please read the Hints and
Tips section of this leaflet and ensure you prepare
yourself for the race properly.
You should take your decision to run on the day
sensibly. If you could not comfortably run 3 miles
one month beforehand, you may not manage the
Bristol 10k in safety, or enjoy it.
It is unfair to you, your family and the event staff to
risk being a medical emergency, even if you are
running for charity.
Medical information, race number
and ChampionChip
The most important items in this race pack are your
race number and ChampionChip. It is essential that
you bring them to the race and you have read and
understood the race start assembly information.
This will tell you which wave you will start in and
the location of your warm-up and assembly pen
(corresponding to the colour of your race number).
NEVER swap your race number with ANY other
runner as it could create a dangerous medical
situation. Anyone who does swap their race
number will be disqualified from this race and
reported to UK Athletics.
You MUST provide full and correct medical and
contact information on the back of your race
number WITH A PERMANENT MARKER and ensure
that your relatives (or other contactable person)
have your race number for reference. Also ensure
you write the name and phone number of the
relative or other person we can contact if necessary
on the back of your race number. Try to remember
to do this before you leave home. DO NOT PUT
YOUR OWN CONTACT DETAILS ON YOUR RACE
NUMBER.
Time zones
Race numbers are coloured according to runner’s
predicted times and Wave Start allocation, to help
marshals ensure that runners are in the correct
time zone at the start. This is very important, as
slower runners starting too near the front could
hinder faster runners. Please ensure that you
position yourself in the right time zone at the start,
which will be clearly marked with the colour of
your number (white/yellow/red/green).
Race numbers
On race day please wear your race number on your
chest, secured with a SAFETY PIN IN EACH CORNER.
The number must NOT be cut or altered in any way
to reduce its size. It is your responsibility to ensure
you arrive at the finish line with your race number
intact. Without it you will not get an official finish
time, a medal, or be able to retrieve your bag.
Do not remove your number until after you retrieve
your bag and leave the race village.
Important information for runners: Race Day
Medical conditions
If you have a medical condition, it is vital that you
notify the race organisers on 01782 396113 prior
to the event. Please also write details of your
condition and / or any medication you are taking
on the reverse of your number (for example:
asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, notable allergies,
cardiac conditions).
Please read all the information on
www.runnersmedicalresource.com before taking
part in the race.
Start arrangements/Time zones
Any Racing Wheelchair Athletes will start from
9.15am and the main race will start at 9.30am and
9.45am. Please be ready to assemble for the Start
from 8.30am. Look for the signs directing you to
your start zone.
Runners will line up on Anchor Road, slow runners,
power walkers, walkers and non-racing wheelchairs,
will line up towards the rear of the field.
Wheelchair and disabled athletes
Athletes who are disabled are very welcome in the
Bristol 10k. Please contact us (see below) to discuss
arrangements and any special needs you may have.
Wheelchair entrants who are being pushed should
take up their position at the rear of the main field.
If you are an experienced self-propelled wheelchair
athlete, you will need to report to the start before
9.00am and must confirm your intention to
participate by contacting us at
bristol@frsystems.co.uk or
telephone 01782 396113.
ChampionChip timing
This will provide you with an accurate race time and
should be attached securely by threading your
shoelaces through the holes, flat side up, with the
chip facing away from the shoe. Please return your
chip for re-use - Collection Bins will be available in
the Race Village after the race.
Walkers and Power Walkers
It is essential for the smooth organisation of the
race that you assemble in the time zones allocated.
In the past, other participants have experienced
serious difficulties from walkers starting in the
wrong time zone and from power walkers who link
arms and block their path. Whilst the race
organisers support your participation in the race,
this activity creates serious problems for other
participants and you will be disqualified. Roads will
re-open according to the schedule indicated - so if
you wish to continue after 12 noon you will need to
leave the carriageway and walk on the pavement.
In choosing to continue after this time you do so at
your own risk, and accept that the race organisers
cannot guarantee that any race, or medical facilities
will remain.
On-line information
The event website www.bristolhalfmarathon.com is
updated frequently with information about race
day, traffic, access and road closures and other
useful information. There is also a useful FAQ
section developed by runners.
Road closures
Many roads will be closed from 3.00am on race day,
so please ensure you allow plenty of time to get to
the race. For further information see the Travel
Information pages or the race website.
Important information for runners: Race Day
Assembly Information
Due to the high number of runners wishing to
take part in the race there will be a 2 wave start.
Please note this will not affect finish times as each
runner’s ChampionChip is only activated by
crossing the Start mat – so times for all waves and
all start areas will give an accurate record of the
time taken to complete the 10k/6 mile course.
WAVE 1: White & Yellow
Start Director by 9.00am. The wheelchair race
will start at 9.15-9.25am ahead of the main field
of runners. Slow runners, power walkers, walkers
and non-racing wheelchairs will line up to the
rear of the second wave.
Please check the race website for any later revisions. Runners starting in WAVE 2 are asked to ensure
that they do NOT obstruct the path of wheelchair athletes or the lead runners who may be
approaching the Finish Line (adjacent to the Start Pens) during the assembly for wave 2.
Within each wave there will be colour coded time bands that correspond to the colour of the
runner’s race numbers. Runners will only be permitted to enter the assembly pen that corresponds
to the colour of their race number*.
This means the race will be staggered, with 2 colour-coded groups starting in Wave 1 at 9.30am and
2 colour coded groups starting in Wave 2 at 9.45am as follows:
the runners in WAVE 1.
Important information for runners: Race Day
Race entry information desk
An information point and FR Systems race
administration desk will be open from 2pm to 5pm
on Saturday 14 May and from 8am on race day
in the Event Village (Millennium Square).
Changing facilities
Limited changing facilities will be located in the
Runners Village (no shower facilities provided).
Bag storage and labels
Secure bag storage will be located in the Runners
Village. Bags should be identified with your race
number, name and address clearly written ON THE
LABEL PROVIDED in this pack. Attach the label
securely to your bag before handing it to the
baggage stewards. All items are left entirely at the
owners risk, the race organisers accept no
responsibility. Your race number will be used as sole
ID for the return of your bag, so do not remove it.
Please do not leave any valuables in your vehicle.
Thieves do not know if bags left on display are
empty, or if jackets have anything in the pocket and
may break in to your vehicle to find out. Leave the
glove box open to show that there is nothing of
value inside and if you cannot avoid leaving items in
your vehicle, put them in the boot.
Timing
There will be a race clock on the lead car and one for
each wave on the finish gantry. Due to the high
number of runners there may be a delay in crossing
the start line, but your ChampionChip will ensure
that you will be given an exact time for your race.
Drink stations
Water stations will be located at approx 5km /
3 miles and at the finish. An energy drink station
will be located at the finish. Please be considerate to
other runners, discard water bottles safely and use
the bins provided.
Medical points
Medical cover will be provided at the start/finish
area and on the course. If you require medical
assistance on the course, please notify the nearest
steward. A sweep vehicle will follow behind the last
participant and will collect any runners unable to
continue who require a lift to the finish.
Should you require urgent medical assistance just
past the finish line, you will be escorted off the
course. Otherwise please keep moving away from
the finish line.
Course stewards and Instructions
Course stewards will be located on the course to
monitor, direct, assist and encourage runners. If you
need assistance at any time during the race, they
should be your first point of contact. Please be
aware of the need to maintain emergency access at
all times and observe stewards instructions to stay
in the correct lanes as necessary. For this reason we
ask that you do not wear headphones.
Finish
At the end of the race runners will pass under the
finish gantry and are then offered a medal, foil
blanket and water. Please keep moving as quickly
as possible through this area before exiting into the
Harbourside Village area where bins will be
available to return your ChampionChip.
Hints & tips... for running the Bristol 10k
Whether this is your first race or you are an experienced runner,
please remember these helpful tips over race weekend.
Do drink plenty of fluids before the start of
the race. Dehydration is the biggest problem
that distance runners have to overcome.
Do acquaint yourself with the route and
where all the facilities you need are located,
particularly the drinks stations. A map is
enclosed in this leaflet and may be
downloaded from the event website.
Do eat before the race. This should be about
three hours before the race start.
Do warm up thoroughly with plenty of
stretching and easy running.
Do plan your race realistically allowing for
your general level of fitness and conditions
on the day.
Do follow the advice of the stewards on the
day – they are there for your safety.
Do get to the start area with plenty of time
to spare. Try packing your kit the night
before and ensure you have plenty of spare
kit available, including a fresh pair of shoes.
Do write details of any medical problems
and medications (including herbal,
alternative and over-the-counter) on the
back of your race number.
DON’T...
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
Don’t consume alcohol before the race.
Don’t come to the race or take part if
you have cold or flu symptoms. Don’t
run the event with a cold or infection –
your condition will only worsen, and it
can lead to permanent problems. There
are always other races!
Don’t run in old shoes and ensure new
shoes are ‘run-in’. It is essential that
nothing rubs and leaves you with sores
or blisters.
Don’t run on a full stomach as this will
make you feel extremely uncomfortable.
Don’t keep training hard right up to the
event – you’ll burn out. A few days rest
before race weekend will leave you
feeling refreshed and ready to race. For
further guidance consult the Race
Training Plan on the race website.
Don’t run with injuries - you will only
make matters worse.
Don’t start off too quickly as this will
inevitably lead to you slowing down.
Don’t remove your race number until
you leave the race village.
Injured? Need help?
As partners of runbristol for the past 6 years, the University of Bristol Sports
experience and expertise to assess and treat your injury and help you reach your
goals. Don't wait until it's too late! To book, phone 0117 928 8810. Our team will be
there on race day to answer questions and help you. Come and see us on May 9th.
