IMPORTANT INFORMATION
FOR RUNNERS
PRE-RACE INFORMATION
Application information
The race is full and there will be no registration on
the day. If you need to discuss your application,
change any personal details, make changes to your
Company Challenge team membership or discuss
items sent in this pack, please ring the race hotline
on 01782 396113 or e-mail bristol@frsystems.co.uk
Are you fit to runbristol ?
Remember that this race is a half marathon and is
over 13 miles/21k long - please read the Hints and
Tips section of this leaflet and ensure you prepare
yourself for the race properly.
You should take your decision to run on the day
sensibly. If you have not prepared sufficiently and
could not comfortably run 8 miles one month
beforehand, you will not manage the half marathon
in safety or enjoy it, so please do not attempt to run.
It is unfair to you, your family and the event staff to
risk being a medical emergency, even if you are
running for charity.
Medical information, race number
and ChampionChip
The most important items in this race pack are your
race number and ChampionChip. It is essential that
you bring them to the race and that you have read
and understood the race start assembly information.
This will tell you which wave you will start in and
the location of your warm-up and assembly pen
(corresponding to the colour of your race number).
NEVER swap your race number with ANY other
runner as it could create a dangerous medical
situation. Anyone who does swap their race number
will be disqualified from this race and reported to
UK Athletics.
You MUST provide full and correct medical and
contact information on the back of your race
number WITH A PERMANENT MARKER and ensure
that your relatives (or other contacts) have your race
number for reference. Also ensure you write the
name and phone number of the relative or other
person we can contact if necessary on the back of
your race number. Try to remember to do this before
you leave home. DO NOT PUT YOUR OWN CONTACT
DETAILS ON YOUR RACE NUMBER.
Time zones
Race numbers and Wave Start allocation are
coloured according to runner’s predicted times.
Marshals ensure that runners are in the correct
colour zone at the start. This is very important as
slower runners starting too near the front can
hinder faster runners. Please ensure that you
position yourself in the right time zone at the start,
which will be clearly marked with your colour.
Race numbers
On race day please wear your race number on your
chest, secured with a SAFETY PIN IN EACH CORNER
(which you will need to bring with you). The
number must not be cut or altered in any way to
reduce its size. It is your responsibility to ensure you
arrive at the finish line with your race number
intact. Without it you will not get an official finish
time, a medal or be able to retrieve your bag.
Do not remove your number until after you retrieve
your bag.
p a ge 3
Medical conditions
If you have a medical condition, it is vital that you
notify the race organisers on 01782 396113 so it
can be passed to our medical team prior to the
event. Please write details of your condition and /
or any medication you are taking on the reverse of
your number (for example: asthma, diabetes,
epilepsy, notable allergies, cardiac conditions).
Please read all the information on
www.runnersmedicalresource.com before taking
part in the race.
Experienced Wheelchair athletes
Experienced self-propelled wheelchair athletes are
very welcome in the Bristol Half Marathon. Please
contact us on 01782 396113 to discuss race day
arrangements and any special needs you may have.
If you are an experienced wheelchair athlete it is
essential that you report to the Start Director by
8.30am in order to start ahead of the main field of
runners.
ChampionChip
This will provide you with an accurate race time
and should be worn on your shoelace during the
race. Please attach it securely with the ties
provided. After the race please leave your
ChampionChip in the bins provided in the Race
Village and Bag Stores.
On-line information and final route
The event website www.bristolhalfmarathon.com
will include important last minute information and
updates to the route so please check the site just
before you leave home for any new information. It
also includes information about Park & Ride bus
services, traffic, access and road closures. There is
also a useful FAQ section developed by runners.
Race Day Information
ASSEMBLY INFORMATION
Due to the ever increasing number of runners
wishing to take part in the race there will be a
2 wave start. Please note this will not affect finish
times as each runner’s ChampionChip is only
activated by crossing the Start mat – so times for
all waves and all start areas will give an accurate
record of the time taken to complete the
13 mile course.
There will also be 2 different assembly areas in
each wave which will ensure that congestion on
the race route, Start and Finish areas is kept to a
minimum. Runners MUST go to the location
allocated to their race number. This will either be
the Council House - College Green, or the
Harbourside Village. Each of these areas will have
their own baggage store, toilets and (limited)
changing facilities. Please arrive ready to assemble
for your wave. Look for the signs directing you to
the time zones that correspond to the colour of
your race number.
Experienced Wheelchair Athletes,
Walkers & Power Walkers
Experienced wheelchair athletes should use
Harbourside Village/Anchor Road and must report
to the Start Director by 8.30am. The wheelchair
race will start at 9.15-9.25am ahead of the main
field of runners. Slow runners, power walkers,
walkers and non-racing wheelchairs will line up to
the rear of the second wave and will be directed to
the Council House, College Green.
p a ge 4
Wave Starts & Time Bands
Race numbers starting with the number “1” are in WAVE 1
Race numbers starting with the number “2” are in WAVE 2
Within each wave there will be colour coded time bands that correspond to the colour of the runner’s
race numbers. Runners will only be permitted to enter the assembly pen that corresponds to the colour
of their race number*.
This means the race will be staggered, with 3 colour-coded groups starting in WAVE 1 at 9.30am and
3 colour coded groups starting in WAVE 2 at 10.00am as follows:
Look out for the tall coloured flags marking the assembly pens.
RACE DAY INFORMATION
Walkers and Power Walkers
It is essential for the smooth organisation of the race
that you assemble in the time zones designated for
you. In the past, other participants have experienced
serious difficulties from walkers starting in the
wrong time zone and from power walkers who link
arms and block their path. Whilst the race organisers
support your participation in the race, this activity
creates serious problems for other participants and
will result in your disqualification from the event.
Roads will re-open according to the published
schedule, so if you wish to continue after scheduled
opening times you will need to leave the
carriageway and walk on the pavement.
In choosing to continue at a slow pace where you
would finish after 1.30pm you do so at your own
risk, and accept that the race organisers cannot
guarantee that bag storage or any race or medical
facilities will remain in operation.
Road closures
Many roads will be closed from 3.00am on race day
so please ensure you allow plenty of time to get to
the race. For further information see the Travel
Information or the race website.
Race Pack Enquiries
An information point and race administration
desk will be open from 2.00pm to 5.00pm on
Saturday 10 September and from 8.00am to 10am
on Sunday 11 September in Anchor Square to
handle any last minute problems relating to your
race pack, number or ChampionChip.
Changing facilities
Limited changing facilities will be located in the
Runners Village and in the Council House (no
shower facilities provided).
Bag storage/Labels
Secure bag storage for runners with white, blue,
green and red numbers will be located in tents on
the Amphitheatre in the Harbourside Runners
Village. Secure bag storage for runners with yellow
and pink numbers will be located in the Council
House on College Green. Bags should be identified
with your race number, name and address clearly
written on the label provided in this pack. Attach the
label securely to your bag before handing it to the
baggage stewards. All items are left entirely at the
owners risk, the race organisers accept no
responsibility. Your race number will be used as sole
ID for the return of your bag, so do not remove it.
Race day security
Please assist us by not leaving any valuables in your
vehicles. Thieves do not know if bags left on display
are empty or if jackets have anything in the pocket
and may break in to your vehicle to find out. Leave
the glove box open to show that there is nothing of
value inside and if you cannot avoid leaving items in
your vehicle, put them in the boot.
Drink stations
Water stations will be located at approx 2 1 /2 , 5 1 /2 ,
8 1 /2 , 10 1 /2 miles and at the finish. Energy drink
stations will be located at approx 4 1 /2 and 8 1 /2 miles
and at the finish. Please be considerate to other
runners and throw water bottles away safely and
use the bins provided.
Recycling challenge!
We have a team of litter pickers collecting plastic
bottles for recycling but please help us recycle as
much waste as possible by using the recycling bins
whenever you can! Plastic recycling bins will be
located just after drink stations, while a greater
range of recycling bins will be located in the
runners village.
p a ge 6
Medical points
Medical cover will be provided at the start/finish
area and on the course. If you require medical
assistance on the course please notify the nearest
steward. A sweep vehicle will follow behind the
last participant and will collect any runners
requiring a lift to the finish.
Should you require urgent medical assistance just
past the finishing line you will be escorted off the
course. Otherwise please keep moving away from
the finish line.
Qualified sports physiotherapists and massage
practitioners from the University of Bristol Sports
Medicine Clinic will be available at the event. They
will be based in a marquee in the Harbourside
Runners Village, and will be providing a free service
to runners from 8.00am until 1.30pm.
Course stewards
Course stewards will be located on the course to
monitor, direct, assist and encourage runners. If you
need assistance at any time during the race, they
should be your first point of contact. Please be
aware of the need to maintain emergency access at
all times and observe stewards instructions to stay
in the correct lanes as necessary.
Finish
At the end of the race runners are directed to the
Finish Zone to collect water, a foil blanket, medal
and race day T shirt. Please keep moving through
the Finish Zone before exiting into the public
Harbourside Village. After the race please leave your
ChampionChip in the bins provided in the Race
Village and Bag Stores.
Runners wishing to return to the Council
House/College Green should follow signs directing
them back along the outside of the Finish Zone in
the reverse direction.
Timing
There will be clocks on the Lead car, Finish Gantry
and half way point. Due to the high number of
runners there may be a delay in crossing the start
line, but your ChampionChip will ensure that the
results will give the exact time for your race.
POST-RACE INFORMATION
Presentations
There will be a presentation ceremony at 11am in
Millennium Square for the Open, British,
Wheelchair and Company Challenge winners.
Winners are asked to report to the presentation
area by the stage at 10.45am. Other prize winners
will receive their prizes in the post when finishing
positions have been formally verified.
Race results
Results will be available on the race website by
9pm on race day. There will also be a special
Evening Post supplement on Monday 12
Hints and tips for running the Bristol Half Marathon
Whether this is your first race or you are an experienced runner, please
remember these helpful tips over race weekend.
DO...
DON’T...
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
Do drink plenty of fluids in the days before
the race. Dehydration is the biggest
problem that distance runners have to
overcome.
Do acquaint yourself with the route and
where all the facilities you need are
located, particularly the drinks stations. A
map is enclosed in this leaflet and may be
downloaded from the event website.
Do eat before the race. This should be
about three hours before the race start.
Do warm up thoroughly with plenty of
stretching and easy running.
Do plan your race realistically allowing for
your general level of fitness and conditions
on the day.
Do follow the advice of the stewards on
the day – they are there for your safety.
Do get to the start area with plenty of
time to spare. Try packing your kit the
night before and ensure you have plenty
of spare kit available, including a fresh pair
of shoes.
Do write details of any medical problems
and medications (including herbal,
alternative and over-the-counter) on the
back of your race number.
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
◗
Do not come to race or take part if you
have cold or flu symptoms.
Don’t run the event with a cold or
infection – your condition will only
worsen, and it can lead to permanent
problems. There are always other races!
Don’t consume alcohol before the race
Don’t run in old shoes and ensure new
shoes are ‘run-in’. It is essential that
nothing rubs and leaves you with sores or
blisters.
Don’t run on a full stomach as this will
make you feel extremely uncomfortable.
Don’t keep training hard right up to the
event – you’ll burn out. A few days rest
before race weekend will leave you feeling
refreshed and ready to race. For further
guidance consult the Race Training Plan on
the race website.
Don’t run with injuries - you will only
make matters worse.
Don’t start off too quickly as this will
inevitably lead to you slowing down.
Don’t remove your race number until you
leave the race village.
