A little extract <strong>of</strong> Calabar bean was now placed on the<br />

eye, <strong>and</strong> in about fifteen or twenty minutes the iris had<br />

so contracted that the pupil was scarcely larger than a<br />

pin's head. About an hour later atropia was put upon<br />

the eye, <strong>and</strong> within an hour the pupil dilated again, so that<br />

eight hours after it was larger than before.<br />

The eye was absolutely dry, there being no lachrymal<br />

secretion, <strong>and</strong> the ball was so completely insensible to<br />

touch that a finger rubbed on the cornea caused no annoyance.<br />

There were also anaesthesia <strong>and</strong> analgesia in the<br />

supra-orbital region <strong>and</strong> the lid.<br />
