ear by a missile, as in most nerve wounds involving<br />

closely related bone, the prognosis is usuall}- hopeless,<br />

while iu the external cases, even <strong>of</strong> severe wounds,<br />

recoveries are not uncommon. We should not, however,<br />

despair until long periods have passed <strong>and</strong> the muscles<br />

have been <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>and</strong> patiently tested by the galvanic current<br />

or by faradisation.<br />

I am indebted to Dr. Allison, resident physician at the<br />

Pennsylvania Hospital, for the following notes <strong>of</strong> a case<br />

<strong>of</strong> traumatic palsy <strong>of</strong> the left hypoglossal nerve, which occurred<br />

in the service <strong>of</strong> Dr. T. G. Morton. I have already<br />

referred to it in discussing the subject <strong>of</strong> trophic <strong>nerves</strong>.<br />
