tember, 1868. He lost but a few hours from his business<br />

after the operation, <strong>and</strong> no time during recovery. Since<br />

then he " has never known a second's pain." For two<br />

months afterwards he had jio sensation in the uhiar distribution,<br />

as he has repeatedly proved by sticking needles<br />

into it. To relieve it,<br />

he began to wear, a week after the<br />

operation, a rough glove filled with hair, the pricking <strong>of</strong><br />

which during movements <strong>of</strong> the h<strong>and</strong> usefully irritated<br />

the integuments. In about two months sensation had<br />

begun to improve, <strong>and</strong> in three months his power to feel<br />

was as good as now. Motion began to return at the<br />

knuckles within a week, <strong>and</strong> gradually improved,<br />

till in<br />

three months it was perfectly restored. He took no medicine,<br />

<strong>and</strong> had not the use <strong>of</strong> the battery.<br />

Present condition, February 13, 1869.— Right arm, ten<br />

<strong>and</strong> a half inches from acromion to head <strong>of</strong> radius; left<br />

arm, eleven <strong>and</strong> a half inches from acromion to head <strong>of</strong><br />

radius; on right arm, ten cicatrices from abscesses, one <strong>of</strong><br />

them four <strong>and</strong> a half inches long, on the outer border <strong>of</strong><br />

the biceps, where the large piece <strong>of</strong> bone was removed;<br />

head <strong>of</strong> humerus nearly, completely anchylosed to the<br />

glenoid cavity, but can be moved slightly<br />

in all directions<br />

; elbow-joint anchylosed firmly at a right angle ;<br />

external<br />

<strong>and</strong> internal cond3'les both gone, <strong>and</strong> cicatrices over<br />

each. Over the internal condyle, <strong>and</strong> extending upward<br />

in the course <strong>of</strong> the ulnar nerve, is the incision made for<br />

its removal. The radius has three-quarters<br />

its natural<br />

rotation. The muscles are much wasted in the arm <strong>and</strong><br />

forearm. What is left <strong>of</strong> the deltoid <strong>and</strong> biceps, say onethird,<br />

is active the<br />

; biceps acting only as a supinator. The<br />

muscles in the forearm are wasted :<br />

right forearm, three<br />

inches below olecranon, nine inches; left forearm, three<br />

inches below olecranon, ten <strong>and</strong> a half inches. He has<br />

every movement <strong>of</strong> all the joints <strong>of</strong> the fingers, <strong>and</strong> every<br />

movement is perfect in extent, but he has lost about one-<br />
