The Dunedin Festival Dance
32R3
Haynes – Dunedin Book 4
Dancers are in circles of three couples with ladies on
their partner’s right.
1-8 All dance six hands round and back.
9-12 All face partners and dance back to back.
13-16 All turn partners with RH.
17-20 All dance RHA (i.e., six hands).
21-24 The man with his hand underneath pulls the lady
opposite (his new partner) under the hands of
the others and they take promenade hold. The
next man does the same, and the 3 rd man pulls
his new partner towards him.
25-30 All promenade at random about the room.
31-32 Each couple joins up with another two couples
to make a circle.

Book 26
1-8 1C turn RH, cast, lead down between 3C, cross
and cast into 2nd place on opposite sides. 2C
step up on bars 3-4.
9-10 All set.
11-16 Reels of 3 across, 1W with 2C and 1M with 3C
(1W gives RS to 2W and 1M gives RS to 3M to
begin), finish in 2nd place on opposite sides 1W
facing down, 1M facing up.
17-22 Reel of 3 on sides, RS to 2 nd corner to begin.
23-24 1C cross by RH and face up nearer hands
joined.
25-32 1C dances 4 hands round to the left with 2C,
turn towards each other, and then dance
4 hands round to the right with 3C.

1-4 1C turn RH and cast off 1 place, 2C step up.
5-8 1C turn LH and cast, 1W up and 1M down, to
finish in lines of 3 across the dance.
9-12 1C, 2C and 3C set twice.
13-16 1W cast down, 1M cast up, and turn RH to finish
in 2 nd place on own sides.
17-20 1C, 2C, and 3C set twice.
21-24 1C, 2C, and 3C turn partner with BH.
25-32 1C and 2C dance R’s and L’s.

18th Century Book
1-4 1M cast off behind 2M, cross over and turn 2W
with RH; 1M finish in 2W position.
5-8 1W cast off behind 2W (who dances to the top),
cross over and turn 2M with LH, finishing 1W in
2M’s place, 2M at top.
9-12 1C lead below 3C and cast up to 2 nd place on
opposite sides.
13-16 1C and 2C dance half R’s and L’s, finish with 1C
at top (own sides) and 2C below on opposite
sides.
17-20 1C and 2C face diagonally: set and petronella
one place to the right.
21-24 Repeat (set and petronella).
25-30 Reels of three on the sides, 1C giving RS to 2 nd
corner to begin.
31-32 1C cross by RH to 2 nd place on own sides. On
the last 2 bars of the 2 nd repetition, 1C cross by
LH to bottom, 4C dance into 3 rd place.

1-8 2C dance a diagonal reel of 4 with 1 st corners
passing each other LS to begin; pass LS to
finish facing 2 nd corner.
9-16 2C dance diagonal reel of 4 with 2 nd corners,
finish in 2 nd place on own sides.
17-24 Progressive Grand Chain:
17-18 1C cross by RH to begin;
19-20 1C change by LH with 2C on the sides;
21-22 2C crosses over at the top by RH as 1C
and 3C change places on the side by
RH;
23-24 2C and 3C change by LH on the sides, as
1C cross over by LH.
25-28 3C and 2C (at the top) dance half R’s and L’s
25-32 3C dance half figure of 8: they dance out the
ends (man up, woman down) and cast into 2 nd
place on own sides.

1-8 1C set, cross giving RH, cast off 1 place, and
turn with LH to finish facing 1 st corners.
9-16 Corner Chain: 1C change RH with corners,
corners turn with LH in the middle once round,
1C change RH with corner and turn LH with
partner to finish facing 2 nd corner.
17-24 Repeat Corner Chain with 2 nd corner, 1C cross
giving LH to finish in 2 nd place on own sides.
25-32 2C, 1C, and 3C dance 6 hands round and back.

Slow March
1-8 8 walking steps forward along line of dance
closing on 8 th step to change direction.
9-16 8 walking steps against line of dance to starting
position, turning on 8 th step to face line of dance.
Waltz
1-4 Nearer hands joined. Balance away from
partner then towards partner. Repeat; away,
towards.
5-8 Ballroom hold, waltz around twice.
9-12 Repeat Bars 1-4, balance away, towards, away,
towards.
13-16 Repeat Bars 5-8, ballroom hold, waltz round
twice.
Polka
1-16 As for waltz, but polka step for turning instead of
waltz step.

stepping up.
5-8 1C and 3C dance RHA, finishing 1M facing 3W
with his partner behind him.
9-12 1C dance a half-diagonal reel of three in tandem
with 1 st corners (during the reel, 1W takes the
lead from 1M and finishes facing 2W with 1M
behind her).
13-16 1C dance a half-diagonal reel of three in tandem
with 2 nd corners (1M takes the lead to finish
facing 3W (now in the woman’s 1 st corner
position) with 1W behind him).
17-20 1C dance a half-diagonal reel of three in tandem
with 1 st corners, finishing 1W facing 2W with 1M
behind her.
21-24 1C dance a half-diagonal reel of three in
tandem, finishing 1M facing out ladies’ side with
1W behind him.
