RR Donnelley’s direct thermal labels are produced with a heat sensitive facestock and a broad spectrum permanent 

adhesive. Direct thermal printers create images by heating a temperature sensitive label or tag. By eliminating the 

expense of ribbons, direct thermal labels may be more cost effective than thermal transfer labels. If your business 

requires short-term use labels (approximately six months or less) this could save you time and money.

Why Clean PrintHeads 

Your printhead can become a dirty place. Contaminants such as dirt, dust, ink, lint, paper particles, adhesives and 

others become lodged and burnt onto the thermal printhead. If the print head is not cleaned regularly the results can 

be printing errors, bad bar code labels, streaks, smears and eventually the replacement of the expensive printhead. 

Thermal printheads should be cleaned every time you change the ribbon, labels or card stock. RR Donnelley cleaning 

cards are completely safe, effective and easy to use. Simply open the pouch and clean your equipment. 

CARDS: Thermal printer cleaning cards are meant to be used on thermal 

transfer and direct thermal printers. 

CLEANING SOLUTION ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL: Pure, electronic grade IPA 

with 9% deionized water cleans dirt and inks. 

EXTERIOR POUCH: A four-layer construction of paper, low density 

polyethylene, foil, and surlyn helps the cleaning solution stay on the card 

for a long shelf life.

GENERAL PURPOSE WAX RIBBONS 

A complete line of wax ribbons is available for all of your 

general purpose applications. We offer several wax-based 

ink formulas which provide high-quality printing at an 

economical price. Developed, designed and produced to 

printer manufacturers’ strict specifications, these ribbons 

offer excellent print quality for normal and rotated bar 

codes and small characters. Due to extensive research 

and development, we are able to offer several lines of wax 

ribbons: one designed to handle basic general purpose 

applications; one with lower printhead energy and excellent 

durability for more demanding applications; and one with a 

revolutionary backcoat for high volume applications where 

printhead buildup is a problem. These ribbons can also 

print at speeds as high as 12 IPS. You can count on our

Our line of ultra premium resin ribbons is designed for 

maximum durability in the demanding environments of 

industrial applications. With a high level of resistance to an 

array of chemicals to which thermal transfer printing may 

be exposed in harsh industrial environments, along with 

potentially high levels of heat, these resin-based ribbons 

are sure to stand up to the test. Our ultra premium ribbons 

have outstanding print quality for normal and rotated bar 

codes, and are able to withstand the effects of steam 

presses. In addition to their high levels of performance in 

demanding environments, they operate at lower printhead 

energy settings than other super premium ribbons, allowing 

you to extend printhead life and reduce maintenance.

For best performance from printed bar codes and text from your thermal printer, it is important to keep 

your printer and printhead clean. However, sometimes cleaning the printhead is put off until "next time" 

the labels or ribbons are changed. 

Our KLEN Ribbons make printing high quality labels EASY for you. KLEN ribbons are available in the most 

popular sizes in wax, wax/resin and resin formulations. They provide a sharp, black, high quality image and 

exceptional durability to meet the demands of your application. Our KLEN ribbons combine Clean Start, 

an integrated cleaning card, with a protective backcoat that extends printhead life and prevents buildup, 

assuring labels and images are clear, consistent and highly readable. 

Clean Start provides the regular cleaning necessary to remove normal debris that accumulates when 

printing - before it becomes harmful buildup. While it doesn’t totally eliminate the need for regular printer 

maintenance - it’s a start - a clean start. 

Five Easy Steps to Using KLEN Wax Ribbons 

• Rewind the label stock and install the 

replacement ribbon on the supply spindle. 

• Feed the blue leader through the gap under 

the printhead and stop when approximately 

1" of the Clean Start film is pulled through. 

• Lock the printhead down. 

• Firmly grip Clean Start film on both 

edges. Gently pull white Clean Start film 

approximately 6 inches using smooth, steady 

force. Stop before black printing ribbon 

reaches the printhead. 

• Printhead cleaning is now complete. Unlock 

the printhead and continue ribbon and stock 

installation as usual.

Burn Temperature Guide 

Overburned 

Overburned labels are fairly obvious. The normal Bar Code bars increase in size, and 

the openings in small alphanumeric characters may fill in with ink. It may be readable 

but not IN SPEC. Rotated Bar Code bars and spaces will run together. 

Slightly Overburned 

Slightly overburned labels are not as obvious. The normal Bar Code will be IN SPEC. 

Small character alphanumerics will be bold and could be slightly filled in. The rotated 

Bar Code spaces are small when compared to the IN SPEC Code, possibly making the 

code unreadable. 

Slightly Underburned 

Slightly underburned labels are, in some cases, preferred to slightly overburned for 

IN SPEC Bar Codes. Both normal and rotated Bar Codes will be IN SPEC, but small 

alphanumeric characters may not be complete. 

Underburned 

Underburned labels are very obvious. Both normal and rotated Bar Codes have 

incomplete bars and spaces. Small alphanumeric characters are unreadable. 

IN SPEC 

The IN SPEC bar code can only be confirmed by a verifier, but it should exhibit some 

very visible characteristics. The normal Bar Code will have complete, even bars and 

clear, distinct spaces. In both normal and rotated styles, small alphanumeric characters 

will look complete.

Void 

The absence of ink in a printing area where ink should appear. A void creates an area of white 

space that can interfere with the first-read rate of a printed code and, depending on the size 

and location of the area, may even render the code unreadable. 

Bridging 

Often caused by overburning; characterized by spaces in printing being filled in with ink. 

Underdeveloped 

Most often caused by underburning; characterized by missing ink transfer throughout the image. 

Ideal Image 

Characterized by crisp edges and sharp corners. Easily readable and scannable.
