Wokingham Midwives Maternity Clinic
Introduction
Following the birth of your baby, your postnatal care will be provided in the community by
the community midwife. This will start when you have been discharged from the hospital
until approximately 10-14 days later. Your care is planned to suit your medical or personal
needs so therefore you may not require a postnatal examination every day.
When or where will I receive postnatal care?
On discharge from hospital, you may have a visit at home the following day between
9.00am and 5.00pm. Every mother requires different levels of attention so, unfortunately,
the midwives are not able to give an appointment time for home visits. We would
appreciate it if you remain at home until the midwife has visited. If you do not receive a
visit by 5.00pm please telephone Marsh Ward on 0118 322 7219 or Iffley Ward on 0118
322 7323. In order for us to maintain good communication between hospital and
community it is important that we have the correct home address where you will be when
the midwife visits and up to date telephone numbers. Can you please ensure the
ward/hospital you have been discharged from are aware of this information to forward to
the community midwives.
Alternatively, you may choose to have your postnatal care at our maternity clinics, which
are held at Wokingham hospital or the nearest Children Centre. The Children Centres are
not used at weekends or bank holidays. The midwives will be able to offer you an
appointment to suit your convenience – the midwife will telephone you on the day to
arrange this with you. If you prefer to attend your subsequent postnatal visits at the clinics,
then this can be arranged with the midwife you has seen you at home.
The Wokingham community midwives may ask a maternity support worker to visit you at
home to provide further support with general baby care and to assist you in your feeding
choice. The midwife will plan these visits with you when you are discharged from hospital.
Your baby will be weighed at 72 hours of age to assess any weight loss from birth and a
blood test will be taken from your baby between days 5 and 6. This is the blood spot
screen test. Your midwife should have provided you with an information leaflet in your
antenatal period. Alternatively, you will be given an information leaflet prior to the test
being performed by the midwife who sees you at home. The midwife may arrange for a
maternity support worker to perform this test once you have given consent. Your care will
be handed over to the health visiting team, usually between day 10 and 14.
