I’ve tried and tried to find something else
to write about this month - honestly, I have - but
there is just no getting away from it.
January is all about resolutions. I don’t know about you but mine are usually the
same most years (do more exercise, eat healthier, drink less wine etc) with the odd
new one thrown in for a bit of variety (stop wasting time on Facebook is my latest
pledge).

I wish you lots of luck with whatever it is that you have
resolved to do/not do/do less of/do more of - if you
make it to the end of the month you’ve got more will
power than I have… Oh, and I almost forgot - Happy
New Year!
If your resolution is to broaden your mind, then there
are plenty of chances to do so. There are a host of talks on
offer this month from local history to climate change.
A fascinating insight into the role of a customs
officer is promised at a talk organised by the Abingdon
and District National Trust Association. Malcolm
Nelson will speak about his 40 years catching smugglers
in ‘The story behind the Green Channel’, taking place
in Abingdon on Tuesday, 21st January. Malcolm was a
customs officer at Heathrow and many other airports
around the world, trying to catch smugglers and training
others to do the same and has many interesting, bizarre
and often funny stories to tell. The talk will take place in
The Guildhall starting at 2.30pm. Non-members are most
welcome and it will cost them £3. Or you can join the

A talk on ‘The Silver on Glass Revolution’ is being given
at Abingdon Astronomical Society’s meeting
on Monday, 13th January. The lecture will be given by
Bob Marriott. The society is also holding a beginners’
meeting on Monday, 20th January. Both meetings will take
place at the All Saints Methodist Church Hall, Dorchester
Crescent, Abingdon starting at 8pm. Prospective new
members may attend one meeting free on a trial basis.
Members will also be taking part in an observing evening
at Bury Down later in the month on the first clear night
only from January 27th to 29th. Anyone who would

Climate change is up for debate in Grove this month.
The talk and discussion on ‘Climate Change - Man or
Cyclic Warming?’ will take place at Grove Horticultural

at 8pm. There will also be refreshments and a raffle.
Visitors are welcome to attend, and it will cost them £3 on

A talk about Oxford’s Jewish quarter is being given at
Abingdon Area Archaeological and Historical Society’s
January meeting. Pam Manix will give the talk ‘Invisible

in Oxford: a Remarkable Medieval Jewish Quarter’ at
the meeting on Thursday, 16th January at 7.45pm at
the Northcourt Centre, Northcourt Road. Visitors are
welcome, and it will cost them £3. Tea and biscuits will be

And the story of the WI during the Second World War
will be told at the January meeting of Sunningwell and
Bayworth WI. Local author, speaker and historian Julie
Summers will give the ‘Jambusters’ talk at the meeting on
Thursday, 9th January at Sunningwell Village Hall starting
at 2pm. All local ladies are most welcome to attend. Entry
for non-WI members is £3.
Staying in Sunningwell, where the village and district
gardening club will be holding its annual general
meeting on Thursday, 9th January. The meeting is being

followed by seasonal refreshments. All members are urged

four-part harmony a cappella style? Harmony Inspires,
a ladies’ a cappella chorus which meets on a Wednesday
evening in Appleton Village Hall, is holding a free

Oxfordshire has 10,370 listed
properties. From pretty thatched
cottages to the Bridge of Sighs
degree of innovation, its design provenance.
Beyond that, selection criteria get ever-stricter:
post-1945 buildings have to be exceptionally significant
to be considered.
When a building or structure is listed it acquires
protected status covering - contrary to popular belief -
its entire plot, or curtilage. In turn this embraces both
the interior and exterior of the property, its immediate
surroundings, previously-added extensions like porches,
canopies or glasshouses and features such as walls, wells,
water pumps and garden statuary.
If this sounds inflexible, it’s not – but it is indispensable.
As countless owners know, regulation is vital if the
errors of the past are to be righted and the challenges of
the future confronted. It’s interwoven with the privilege
of safeguarding our architectural heritage, and all that
entails in maintaining venerable buildings. Or modifying
them: given the appropriate guidelines, there’s no reason
why yesterday’s time-honoured buildings and today’s
time-pressured lives shouldn’t happily coexist.
To make this a reality – after all, the majority of listed
buildings are their owners’ homes – requires a central
resource of counsel and expertise. This is where the
Listed Property Owners Club (LPOC) makes its mark.

The essential helping hand
For over 20 years LPOC has been Britain’s only advice
service dedicated to supporting the owners of listed
buildings, and promoted as the first port of call for
anyone contemplating such an acquisition. Its small-buthighly-experienced
team – accessible directly, not via a
call centre - dispenses the personal approach crucial to
helping members enjoy their listed property ownership
to the full.
One message LPOC regularly reiterates is that listing a
property does not mean embalming it. At some stage,
it will almost certainly require some form of alteration,
but with expert guidance owners can be steered towards
the right solution and helped to negotiate that potential
minefield called Listed Building Consent, without which
no changes to a listed property are possible. Because
the planning and construction disciplines involved are
(necessarily) stringent, and because legislation constantly
changes, one of LPOC’s key duties is keeping applicants
informed of their rights and responsibilities. At the heart
of the whole culture of listed buildings, LPOC is in a
unique position to clarify contemporary thinking. One of
its fundamental recommendations is that owners make
a point of getting to know their second port of call, the
Conservation Officer of their local authority.

Find out if orienteering is for you at a special taster
event being run in Oxford on Saturday, 11th January.
Organised by Thames Valley Orienteering Club, the
event at The University Parks is designed to give an
introduction to the sport and is aimed at newcomers,
families and runners of all ages and abilities. You can
choose whether you run, jog or walk with longer
courses for runners of around five kilometres, and shorter
courses for families and children of around
two to three kilometres. Courses will normally take
around 30 to 75 minutes. Everyone taking part will get
a special orienteering map of the park showing your
chosen course which will consist of a series of control
points. The challenge is choosing your route between
each one, as quickly as you can (or at a more leisurely
pace if you prefer) and there will be experts on hand to
help anyone who hasn’t tried it before. People can start
from any time between 10am and 11.30am. For more

The Earth Trust is hosting some family play and
discovery sessions in the woods. The Little Wittenham
centre is running the Forest School sessions on Sunday, 5th
January offering children the opportunity to

Back in Abingdon, where an exhibition of pottery from
the 19th century is on show. ‘Wild Roses at Nuneham:
Pottery for People’ at Abingdon Museum is a unique and
extensive collection of blue and white pottery, decorated
with an iconic scene of Nuneham Park House from the
River Thames, with a border of wild roses. Nuneham
Park, designed by Capability Brown, was a favourite view
drawn by Thames artists and William Cooke’s engraving
made in 1811, of a scene drawn by Samuel Owen, was
used to create transfers used on tableware and other
items of pottery. The Nuneham Courtenay or Wild Rose
design was produced by more than 50 different potters
during the 19th century, creating a wealth of subtle
patterning differences which are only comparable in
this collection. The exhibition, which includes rare and
unusual pieces, is on show in Abingdon until 2nd March.
There will be a lunchtime lecture on the exhibition with
John Homewood at 1pm on Tuesday, 21st January, and
a pottery handling workshop on Tuesday, 4th February

A free seminar looking at the employment rights of
women and their partners before and after having a
baby is being held in Abingdon. The National Childbirth
Trust (NCT) in conjunction with Darby’s Solicitors LLP
is holding the seminar, which will include a question
and answer session and will also cover tips on how to
submit flexible working requests. The event takes place

Bagpuize this month. The six-week course for residents
of Kingston Bagpuize, Southmoor and the immediate

A club which provides help, support, fun and friendship
to people who have survived a stroke meets in
Abingdon every other week. Stroke Club is run by a
group of stroke survivors for the benefit of fellow
survivors, specifically of working age. The group meets for
lunch every other Tuesday at the College Oak, Peachcroft
from 11am until 1pm and will be meeting in January on 14th
and 28th. Carers and friends are also welcome to attend.
The club’s motto is ‘let us brighten up your day’ and the
get-togethers aim to put smiles on people faces while
also helping them adjust to the new way of life a stroke
demands. The emphasis is very much on the importance of
being a survivor, not a victim or sufferer. The club, which
is a not-for-profit organisation and is currently seeking
charitable status, is working to expand the help it can offer
members, and in the long term plans to develop an out-ofhours
phone service for stroke survivors and their carers to
provide them with a listening ear when they need it. The
club is also currently working on a new website that can be
used by stroke survivors to swap ideas, make new friends
and to gain support from each other. Volunteers are needed
to help with the new website as well as with the group’s
fundraising, marketing and accounts. Anyone interested in

It’s
time again!
Peter Savage offers a guide on where to stay as he heads to the south of France
Turning the corner of the year, so to speak, always makes
January bearable, just three months and it’s spring. The
lure of the south of France continually tugs us back and
below are a few ideas about where to stay on the way
down and back including the wonderful village of Saint
Clair, Le Lavandou, between Toulon and St. Tropez. I hope
you’ll feel some summer warmth creep through when
reading.
forgotten how pleasurable it is to potter along at a speed
where you can appreciate the countryside. The road,
on a Monday in August, was very quiet and the 70 odd
kilometres from the A4 to Gudmont Villiers was soon
covered. It is truly out in the wilds, or at least feels like it,
but it’s oh, so worth it. Make your sat nav work!
Super restaurant, great rooms, very nice people. Easy
next day onward travel to Dijon.
Notes on travel
I became a Frequent Traveller on Eurotunnel last year
that entitled me to 10 trips from Dover to Calais and
back – that’s five out, five back – for just under £400. So,
for roughly £80 per time, summer or winter, you know
what you’ll pay. However, as good a deal as this is, be
careful when booking as they bracket off certain
times of the day to charge extra. For instance, if
you want to leave Dover at about 10am it will
probably cost you a further £20. The same
applies to return journeys. It still represents
value but if you’re not a regular tripper stick
to booking as you go.
The way down….south of Reims
Off the motorway, but not far from Chaumont
is La Source Bleue, Gudmont Villiers, Haute Marne,

Anglais from Calais to Reims (2.5 hours) then continued
towards Metz and Strasbourg (A4) we took the first exit
for Chalons sur Marne and Saint-Dizier on the N67. I had

Macon, off the A6, about half way between Toulon and
Calais, is not a bad spot to stay. The centre is of course
lovely but about 7km west from there lies the pretty
village of Sommere, La Roche Vineuse and the floral B+B,
Le Tinailler d’Aleane owned by Eliane Heinen. She and
husband rebuilt the old vineyard buildings amid the
beautiful hillsides of the region of Saint Veran and
Eliane will gladly help you to find restaurants
in the area or arrange a wine buying trip. It is
old fashioned but nice and is not expensive at

A beach holiday in the south of France
Saint Clair, Le Lavandou.
The beach is where it’s at, quite definitely, and as
Saint Clair is more a small bolt-on to La Lavandou’s
much bigger town, space is at a premium. In fact, the
whole area is fast becoming as popular as anywhere
along the coast from Toulon to Ventemiglia. The beach

Of course, there are private beaches with two loungers
and umbrella for hire at €24 per day. Public beaches
intersperse the private ones and there are several, good
low cost restaurants and pizza bars all minutes away.
Other accommodation lies behind the beach complex
offering basic but good apartments, The Tamarind Hotel,
The Orangery, La Bastide, and Madame Martine Bergoin
has four apartments in her complex that offer a range
of accommodation ideal for families and friends to book
together. They are all self-catering and some have small
or medium gardens for al fresco evenings. Email her for

There’s much to discover here and along the coast.
It’s only about 30 minutes to St. Tropez but there are
hundreds of coves and beaches along the way on this
hilly, interesting, sundrenched and fun-packed coast. Oh,
do try the parasailing from Le Lavandou, it’s just fantastic
fun!
One of my fond holiday memories was when the children
were small, money was tight and a friend offered to let us
hire her family’s gite at an affordable price.
The kids were packed and the car loaded with everything
we could possibly require. This would be the first time we
had ever driven in France. We nervously set off for the
Ferry, an AA route plan clasped in my sweaty, anxious
hand. Positive mental attitude - everything would be fine
once we found our way out of Calais, I told myself. A
flash of inspiration showed me what to do, follow the car
in front, no worries, easy.
Panic did not set in until we boarded the ferry (we were
early as usual). Our car was positioned at the very front
of the ferry and looked like a figure head from an old
fashioned sailing boat, complete with 35-degree angle.
We arrived in Calais full of trepidation. Everyone
was called back to their vehicles to ensure a speedy
disembarkation. Guess who was first off the boat? Yes us.
Help! Where do we go from here? Which side of the road
is it again? Off we went, no problem. “STOP!” We met a
car on the wrong side of the road. Oops!
“English!” The tolerant French driver exclaimed as he
calmly went on his way. And that was just the beginning
of our adventures in France.

Also looking for volunteers is an Oxfordshire charity
which helps children who have trouble reading.
Assisted Reading for Children (ARCh) recruits, trains and
supports volunteers in primary schools across the county
to help hundreds of children every year who are struggling
with reading. Volunteers are needed to help out for
one-and-a-half hours twice a week during the school day
in a primary school nearby. No particular qualifications
are needed, just patience, enthusiasm and kindness and
the ability to commit to working with the charity for a
minimum of one year. Full training and ongoing support
is given and travel expenses are reimbursed. ARCh will
need to obtain enhanced DBS disclosure before offering

projects in the Vale of White Horse. The district
council’s capital community grants scheme will

The River & Rowing Museum
Introducing…
Henley’s River & Rowing Museum opened in 1998 to
celebrate the river, the international sport of rowing
and its relationship with the town. Fans of Wind in the
Willows can see a special exhibition in one of their four
permanent galleries. The museum also hosts regular
lectures, workshops and family events. Designed by David
Chipperfield and located on the banks of the Thames,
the Museum celebrates four core themes: Rivers, the
