LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN
LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
As Roundabout marked its 20 th anniversary of producing on Broadway, the 2011-
12 season was a celebration of the past, and a reaffirmation of Roundabout’s
influence and importance in New York’s cultural life. Under the leadership of
Artistic Director Todd Haimes, Managing Director Harold Wolpert, and Executive
Director Julia Levy, Roundabout has achieved many milestones both on- and off-stage.
Roundabout’s variety and artistic depth this year was no exception to seasons past. We saw revivals of powerful
plays like Man and Boy, The Road to Mecca and Look Back in Anger, as well as the Broadway premiere of the
hilarious farce Don’t Dress for Dinner. Roundabout was recognized with 38 award nominations, among them
four Tony ® nominations, and a dozen Drama Desk nominations. In July, after 554 performances and three
extensions, we said bon voyage to our Tony-winning revival of Anything Goes. The show will live on, however,
when a North American tour launches in October 2012. Harvey was our third-best selling straight play ever, and
we were thrilled by its instant success. Roundabout Underground, our program for championing the work of
emerging playwrights, commemorated its fifth year. Given Roundabout’s prominence, its impact on the careers
of these playwrights has been profound. And we’re proud that one of this year’s most acclaimed (and Pulitzershortlisted)
plays, Sons of the Prophet, was written by Stephen Karam, whose Speech and Debate was our first
Underground production. During the 2011-12 season, more people than ever – 672,806 to be exact – saw a
Roundabout production.
Beyond the stage, Roundabout made important strides in expanding our digital presence with increased social
media marketing and a new website. It’s easier to buy tickets and make donations, and social media is integrated
throughout the site. We also created a searchable website for our growing, institutional archives of photographs,
videos, and documents from our 46-year history.
Roundabout continued its commitment to New York City’s public school students and their teachers. Due to
budget cuts, our schools are constantly challenged to do more with less. Education at Roundabout’s goal,
therefore, is to help bring theatre arts into our city’s classrooms. Thanks to Board member Larry Kaplen, who
generously matched each gift designated to our education program, we were able to raise $251,063 towards
restoring our Teaching Artists hours to pre-2008 levels. In fact, across the board, fundraising efforts have
remained strong over the last fiscal year with the addition of a Benefit Concert Reading to support the Musical
Theatre Fund, and the impact of the newly created Roundabout Leaders for New Works to support the New Play
Initiative.
I said at the start of this letter that this was a season that reminded us all of the significant impact Roundabout
has had on the cultural life of our city. This idea extends beyond just our artistic programming. In an effort to
continue to respond to the ever-changing needs of our community, and remain a leader in our field, the Board
of Directors and management have spent the past year defining short- and long-term strategies designed to
ensure the financial strength of Roundabout. I am pleased to report that due in part to these efforts, we ended
the 2011-12 year with close to a balanced budget.
As you peruse the following pages, and remember the highlights of this banner season, I want to extend my
sincerest thanks to you – our many loyal subscribers, donors, Leadership Council, staff, artists, and my fellow
Board members. All of you make Roundabout a dynamic home for producing the highest quality theatre with the
finest artists, sharing stories that endure, and providing accessibility to all.
Audience members and artists alike are always asking me one question: How do you
choose the work you put on your stages? Trying to answer this query is no small feat.
My mind is constantly spinning with lists of plays, of actors and directors, of theatre
availability, and scheduling logistics. These details, however, are only the surface level of
how I create a season at Roundabout. My goal each season is to fulfill the mission that has brought so many wonderful
people to Roundabout both on-stage and in the audience over the years – and that is to do great productions with stories
that we can relate to, empathize with, and in which we recognize ourselves. Classic shows and new works that endure,
because they are a vital part of who we are.
The classic plays we revived this past season are timeless stories, written decades ago yet still relevant today. Man and
Boy is about how finances and the economy greatly affect our lives – a theme which is possibly more relevant today than
the day it was written. Frank Langella and I wanted to revisit this play and bring it to a new generation. Combining Frank
with the fresh, young talent of Adam Driver and getting the brilliant Maria Aitken to direct gave this explosive play a new
life. The Road to Mecca, a meditation on art and aging by South African agitator Athol Fugard, similarly explores themes
fundamental to the human condition – legacy, individuality, and personal expression. The play offered us the chance to
share the main character’s deliberations while allowing us to work with beloved veteran actors Rosemary Harris and Jim
Dale.
We also revived Look Back in Anger, and I was thrilled that the director, our Associate Artist Sam Gold, chose to present
the play with a new, stark spin, rather than using the expected historical context we’ve seen before. I thought it was
incredibly satisfying to see this combination of young artist and classic play coming together in a completely new way.
For me, one of the proudest moments this season came from seeing the success of Stephen Karam’s Sons of the
Prophet at the Steinberg Center’s Laura Pels Theatre. Not only did Roundabout commission and develop this play, but
Stephen was the first playwright ever produced in our Roundabout Underground program. Five years ago we took a
risk starting a program that supported emerging playwrights, and watching Stephen and all of our Underground writers
advance their careers has been an exciting sign that our efforts in nurturing the next generation of great writers have
been worthwhile.
I want these productions to stay with our audiences long after they leave the theatre, and I try to provide variety in tone,
style, and genre. I try to give opportunities to artists I consider to be part of the Roundabout family, whom I greatly
respect and admire, and want to continue to work with. Just as important for our company, I also try to give opportunities
to artists with whom I’ve wanted to work for years. Having the visionary Moises Kaufman direct The Common Pursuit,
and Jim Parsons perform in Harvey – taking on his first Broadway leading role in this contemporary classic – brought a
new energy to these plays. Finally, I try to give the next generation their chance to find a place in our theatrical landscape
and give us a taste of what great things we have to look forward to in the years to come. In this way, our process is about
honoring theatre’s vibrant past, and laying the groundwork for its future.
As I look ahead to next season, my 30 th year with Roundabout, I am so happy that we have been able to maintain a
distinct identity in the world of theatre by producing the masters while also cultivating the future impact-makers of our
industry. But there’s so much more to be done, and my wish list for this company is far from complete. I want to make
sure the work we are doing is accessible and affordable to even more theatre-goers. I want to remain relevant to our
community through our work with students and teachers in our city’s public schools. I want writers, directors, actors, and
designers to know that this is a place where bold ideas are supported, and where taking a risk is not the exception but
rather a thrilling part of the pursuit of great storytelling. I thank you all – artists, audiences, staff and our fantastic Board
led by Chair, Tom Tuft, for making all this work possible. I look forward to our future together as we continue to bring
enduring stories for all to experience to our fives stages.
Thomas E. Tuft, Chairman of the Board
Roundabout places classic plays and musicals at the center of its mission and programming. Since its opening
season in 1966, Roundabout has produced more than 200 play revivals and brought nearly one-third of all
Broadway musical revivals to the stage, concentrating on works that generally would not be produced in the
commercial theatre. Roundabout classic plays and musicals are synonymous with high production values,
unique artistic collaborations, and accessibility. The productions invite audiences of all backgrounds to engage
in a dialogue between the world of the play and their personal experience.
READINGS AND WORKSHOPS
ROUNDABOUT UNDERGROUND: CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS
Playreadings further our commitment to cultivating new plays and musicals, to re-working the classics, and serve as developmental
opportunities for our artists. Friends Playreadings provide artists with the opportunity to have their work performed before
an enthusiastic audience and give Roundabout donors the unique opportunity of experiencing theatre in the early stages
of the development process. Artistic Workshops provide an intensive forum in which playwrights, composers, lyricists, and
directors can test works in front of a small group of their peers. We depend on our Associate Artists at Roundabout to help
drive these readings. Finally, the Underground Reading Series showcased up and coming playwrights as part of our five year
celebration of Roundabout Underground. The following playreadings were produced during Roundabout’s 2011-12 season.
Readings and workshops are supported, in part, by the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.
Roundabout Underground, a component of our New
Play Initiative, works to build relationships with writers
and directors and to develop and debut works that will
contribute to the American theatre canon.
This year we celebrated five years of Roundabout
Underground with a five-night free reading series
of new works capped off by a celebration to honor
our Underground participants. We gathered past
playwrights, directors, actors, and cast members, as
well as a large group of the Underground’s greatest
supporters, to celebrate the program and the incredible
success the Underground’s family of artists has seen.
The evening was hosted by members of Roundabout
Leaders for New Works and helped increase awareness
and support for our commitment to new plays and
emerging artists.
Board member Sylvia Golden, member of
Roundabout Leaders for New Works, welcomes
supporters and artists to the celebration.
Roundabout friends gather to commemorate this
milestone.
IN THE COMMUNITY
EDUCATION AT ROUNDABOUT
Education at Roundabout’s mission is to use theatre to enhance teacher practice and deepen student learning in
New York City’s public schools. We are dedicated to using our resources as a professional theatre company to
strengthen the role of theatre as a tool for teaching and learning while engaging some of the most underserved
members of the New York City community. Our mission is manifested through a series of comprehensive
programs, all of which comply with city, state, and federal arts learning standards.
School Partnerships are at the core of our work and provide
year-long, curriculum-based residencies to middle schools and high
schools with limited access to the arts in all five boroughs.
Theatre Access provides student groups throughout the tri-state
area with free and discounted matinee tickets to our productions,
including pre-show workshops and post-show talkbacks with actors
and creative teams.
Student Production Workshop, our on-site after-school
program, develops collaborative and leadership skills in participants
as they write, direct, design, market, mount, and execute their own
theatrical productions in our Black Box Theatre.
Professional Development workshops build teachers’ and
Teaching Artists’ skills in using theatre as an effective teaching tool,
giving free rein to their creativity while engaging in theatre arts to
enhance classroom practice.
Career Development provides a wide range of hands-on
learning opportunities for young professionals interested in theatre
administration, providing regular interaction with members of
Roundabout’s senior staff, as well as a weekly stipend.
IN THE COMMUNITY
In addition to our artistic endeavors, Roundabout is dedicated to multiple community-based initiatives. As a notfor-profit,
we continually work to ensure accessibility to our shows through audience development programs and
discount tickets. Our education program is committed to bringing theatre arts to students and teachers across
New York City’s five boroughs. Our institutional Archives not only preserves our rich history but makes it accessible
to researchers, students, and historians. Sharing our company and offering exciting and innovative opportunities
for our community is a central component of our mission – one that we look forward to for years to come.
WELCOMING NEW AUDIENCES
ENGAGING LOYAL AUDIENCES
Through our multi-faceted audience development initiative,
ACCESS ROUNDABOUT, we make theatre affordable
and accessible for all audiences, particularly underserved
audiences. Access Roundabout was launched during
the 2007-08 season and continues to expand each year.
This season, Access Roundabout distributed over 37,000
deeply discounted tickets through the following initiatives:
Roundabout Underground: All tickets to productions in
Roundabout’s 62-seat Black Box Theatre at the Harold and Miriam
Steinberg Center for Theatre are $20. By providing opportunities to
see affordable quality theatre, Roundabout cultivates an audience of
thoughtful and adventurous theatre-goers.
Rich Sommer, Tracee Chimo and audience members
enjoying a HIPTIX event following Harvey.
To preserve Roundabout’s loyal audiences and allow for deeper relationships with the institution,
Roundabout hosts a wide variety of pre- and post-theatre events, engages guests through social media
and e-mail marketing, and shows appreciation for loyal support through invitations to special events.
Theatre-PLUS: Roundabout’s innovative Theatre-PLUS programs have enhanced the theatre-going
experience for thousands of subscribers. Theatre-PLUS subscribers can discuss the performance with
the stars, mix and mingle with like-minded arts enthusiasts, or attend a pre-show wine tasting led by an
expert from a top winery.
Social Media: Roundabout engages with the online community daily through posts, discussions, and
sharing of multi-media on Facebook, Twitter, and the MyRoundabout Blog. Roundabout’s extensive
Facebook reach includes a secondary network (friends of fans) of over 11 million, with an average weekly
reach of 40,000.
HIPTIX: Roundabout’s audience development program for young
adults ages 18-35 aims to build loyalty in the next generation of
theatre-goers and cultural consumers. The initiative attracts ticket
buyers with low prices to all Roundabout shows and post-show
gatherings with fellow theatre enthusiasts.
ROUNDABOUT ARCHIVES
SHE LOVES ME: A BENEFIT CONCERT READING
In 2008 Roundabout received dedicated funding from the Leon Levy Foundation to initiate a permanent
archive to systematically identify and preserve artifacts and documents that tell our unique theatre story.
Unlike other cultural institutions with long standing dedication to preserving artifacts, theatre companies
are only now contemplating the urgency in preserving legacy through recorded documentation. Due to the
intrinsic temporality of time-based performance, much of the supporting documentation has historically
not been retained. This documentation – scripts, scores, contracts, design elements (lighting, set,
costume, and sound) – taken in whole, provides a rare entrance into the nuances of staged performance
and provides scholars and theatre professionals an important resource for studying theatre production.
Now approaching its fifth year,
Roundabout’s archives
Provide both physical and digital access to the collection – over
13,400 unique viewers have used the online collection thus far;
Work throughout the school year with Education at Roundabout
to support lesson planning (generally 3-5 school visits each year
throughout the five NYC boroughs);
Are an active participant in local and national archives associations
dedicated to preserving and making accessible performing arts
material.
On December 5, 2011, a star-studded cast performed a
special one-night-only benefit concert reading of the romantic
musical comedy She Loves Me at the Stephen Sondheim
Theatre. The cast was led by Kelli O’Hara, Josh Radnor, Gavin
Creel, Jane Krakowski, Peter Bartlett, Michael McGrath, Rory
O’Malley, and Victor Garber, with a 15-member orchestra
led by Paul Gemignani. The benefit raised over $470,000 for
Roundabout’s Musical Theatre Fund.
Scott Ellis directed the evening in celebration of Roundabout’s
inaugural musical production and the 20 th anniversary of
producing on Broadway. First seen on Broadway in 1963,
She Loves Me was lost to generations of theatre-goers until
Roundabout’s 1993 Broadway revival, also directed by Ellis.
The critically-acclaimed production was Roundabout’s very
first musical and launched its musical theatre program,
leading to celebrated productions such as the 2011 Tony
Award-winning revival of Anything Goes. Many alumni of the
1993 cast and creative team were in attendance to celebrate
this milestone, including Judy Kuhn, Howard McGillin, Louis
Zorich, as well as book writer Joe Masteroff and lyricist
Sheldon Harnick.
SPRING GALA 2012 FROM SCREEN TO STAGE: HONORING ROB MARSHALL
OUR SUPPORTERS
The 2012 Spring Gala, From Screen to Stage, was an evening
of Hollywood glamour with Broadway flair. The event took
place on March 12, 2012, at the Hammerstein Ballroom
and honored director/choreographer Rob Marshall with the
Jason Robards Award for Excellence in Theatre.
Chaired by Stephanie and Ron Kramer, the event was a
fundraising success, raising nearly $2.3 million to support
the Musical Theatre Fund and Education at Roundabout.
Our honoree has not only had an incredible impact on
Roundabout, but on the world of musical theatre at large,
and the entire Roundabout community was excited to be
celebrating such an extraordinary artist.
The highlights of the evening included a musical tribute
created by Kathleen Marshall with memorable performances
by Christine Baranksi, Boyd Gaines, Victor Garber, Donna
Murphy, Kelli O’Hara and Bernadette Peters, an exciting live
auction, as well as a “roast” of Marshall by host Martin Short
as Jiminy Glick. Heartfelt speeches by Richard Gere and
Julie Andrews also contributed to an unforgettable night.
creative communities in New York State’s 62 counties; and
the City of New York Theater Subdistrict Council, LDC and
the City of New York. American Airlines is the official airline of
