John Revell married Elisabeth Roberts at Rothwell on February 1 st 1635 / 6, and an Elizabeth Revell married William Measure at Maxey on April 23 rd 1640. Maxey is eight miles east of Stamford and eight miles north of Peterborough. It is not possible to determine at present whether these Revells are connected to those of Warwickshire or those of the eastern counties, particularly at Norman’s Cross, Yaxley and Folksworth — see Part 11, but the earliest John Revell of Rockingham must have been born not later than 1370. John Revell son of William Revell of Buckeby and Ellen seems too early, and John Revell of Coventry, mercer, fits the date of birth but is of a different character. At the end of the 13 th century Rockingham forest extended north-east to Stamford and Oundle the latter only seven miles from Folksworth where Revells of uncertain origin are documented early in the 13 th century, and again in 1439. 295 It is interesting to note that in 1331 the castle and town of Hertford, the manor of Kyngsclyve (Northamptonshire), and the manor of Shene (Surrey) were all granted to Queen Isabella, 296 possibly suggesting a Revell connection. William Revell, Bell-founder, extant 1320–1340–1358–? A William Revell is clearly documented as a bell-founder, probably with a foundry in the City of London, and responsible for 297, 298, 299, 300, 301, 302, church bells in many parts of the country, including Durham, Suffolk, Norfolk, Kent, Surrey and Wiltshire, 303 and surprisingly also at St Dochdwy’s Church, at Llandough-juxta-Cowbridge in Glamorgan. 304 His name appears on bells in the period 1340 to 1357, 305, 306 for example in the Church of St Michael at Heckfield there is ‘a bell by William Revel of London, ca 1350’, 307 but this practice of incising the maker’s name declined after 1357. Others are located at Norwich St Lawrence, The Blessed Virgin Mary at Hassingham, Rowdham St Andrew (all in Norfolk), and Longfield in Kent. However, if he is connected to these Revells it does seem strange that there is no mention of him in connection with the bells of Leicestershire, Northamptonshire or Warwickshire. William the Bell-founder’s origins remain obscure. If it is correct that his name appears on bells from as early as 1340, then it suggests that he had already completed his apprenticeship by that date and was established with his own foundry. This in turn suggests that he was born before 1320 and perhaps about the turn of the century (compared with an estimate of not later than ca 1325 for William son of Robert of Bukkeby This William Revell is recorded as an executor and beneficiary of the bell-founder William de Raughton, who was first recorded in 1316, and whose will is dated November 11 th 1356, 308, 309 and he is almost certainly the William Revell paying rent at St Botolph’s Aldgate, in Houndsditch, London, in 1358. 310 Billiter (Belleyetere) Street in Aldgate was the centre of bell-making, 311 312, 313 and at least two contemporary Bellfounders (William Land and Culverdon) operated at Houndsditch. son, are recorded in a transaction with Richard de Wymbissh and Johanna his wife in Cavendish, Suffolk, 318 and a Giles Revell is also associated with the Revells of Berkshire in 1291. 319 See also Part 10 and Part 11. William Revell, a cleric It is by no means certain that these records all refer to the same individual. In 1342 the Papal Registers contain an entry: 320 ‘To the bishop of St. Davids. The like in regard to William Rivel, the illegitimate son of a married man’. The term ‘the like’ refers back to ‘Mandate to dispense [William Rivel] ‘the son of a priest, so that he may be ordained and hold a benefice’. In 1374 there is a record of a William Ryvell, priest at Sandridge in Hertfordshire, 321 and he could well be the Rector of St. Nicholas, Hertford, Lincoln diocese also referred to in 1374). 322 The later records of a William Revel associated with the Cathedral Church of London paying Poll Tax of 3 s 11½ d in the period 1379 to 1381, 323 and a William de Ryvell, clerk, to whom, in part, the manor of Little Burley was granted in 1390, 324 and the priest at Wellingborough in Northamptonshire (1407) 325 might also be the same individual. William Revell of Oxford ?–1365–1385–1401–? The Fine Rolls dated 1385 contain an instruction to a William Ryvele ‘to levy and collect the said tenth and fifteenth …’ for the town of Oxford, 326 suggesting that he was born no later than ca 1365. On August 11 th 1386 he is named in connection with an Inquisition ad quod dampnum about tofts and cartilage. On April 15 th 1391 he witnessed a grant of a messuage by William Chyselhamptone to Robert his son, 327 on June 15 th 1396 he witnessed a grant by John le Sauser, 328 and on December 8 th 1396 he witnessed the sale of a tenement to William Chyselhamptone. 329 He was Bailiff in 1398 and 1399. 330 331 The Cartulary of the Hospital of St John the Baptist records William Ryuell as a witness to the lease of a tenement to John of the Chanber on September 29 th 1398, 332 and to a grant by John garsyndone and his wife on January 4 th 1400 / 1. 333 On September 29 th 1400 he witnessed a grant by William Chyselhamptone to Robert his son of all his lands in Northgate hundred, 334 and he is recorded at least eight times in the Latin text, The mediaeval archives of Oxford University with regard to the Statutes of Labourers, Proceedings of the Justices of the Peace at Oxford, 335 during much the same period while Richard Garston was Mayor at various dates between 1382 and 1411. 336 His identity and connection if any to the Revells of Warwickshire is not known, but it is possible that he is the William Revell of Byfield who married Isabelle, thought to be a son of William of Bukkeby and Ellen — see above.
