Attilburgh of Coventre, for his life, of the manor of Buckeby, the reversion of which, in fee, belongs to the said Richard son of Joan’. 247 In 1410 / 1 he is referred to again in the Close Rolls: ‘Richard son of Geoffrey Reynald of Edmescote, otherwise called Richard Reyuell, otherwise Richard son of Joan daughter of William Ryuell, to Robert Huggeford esquire and Joyce his wife, and to the heirs and assigns of the said Robert. Quitclaim with warranty of the manor of Edmescote co. Warrewyke otherwise called Edlescote, and of all lands, rents, reversions and services in Edmescote and Milverton late of William Ryuell, whereof they were enfeoffed by Thomas Knyght clerk, John Lee of Fulbroke, Thomas Ryuell of Edmescote and William Taillour of Warrewyke’. 248 There is a further reference in 1417 to a Thomas Ryvell of Edmuscote who along with William Attulburgh the Elder received a letter of ‘general attorney’ from Richard Ryvell of Geydon. 249 There is then gap in records of some 45 years and it is possible that these later records are to a different individual. In 1463 an Ancient Deed records: 250 ‘A. 8394. Feoffment by Thomas Reynolde of Buckeby, to Thomas Wylde, esquire, John Dyve, esquire, William Hyne, clerk, William Belgrave, 'gentilman,' and Richard Hyne, clerk, of all his lands, &c. in the town and fields of Buckeby. Buckeby, 5 April, 2 Edward IV. Fragments of seal’. The O’Quinn Law Library at the University of Houston lists records from the Court of Common Pleas dated 1465 of a ‘Thomas Ryvel, gent. of Bukby’, who is the defendant with regard to three pleas of debt, two of which are clearly connected to the foregoing transaction. 251 These have been translated by Matt Tompkins as follows: 252 ‘CP40/814 img 389f: John Higford, esq., [in following entry called 'sheriff of Warks'], by his attorney, appeared on the 4th day against Thomas Ryvell [note spelling] of Bukby in Northants, 'Gentilman', in a plea that he render him £40 which he owes him and unjustly witholds etc. And he did not come, and the sheriff was ordered to summon him etc. And the sheriff now returns that he has nothing etc. Therefore he is to be taken to be here in the Quindene of Easter’. ‘CP 40/814 img 1137d: William Catesby, knight, John Huggeford and John Dyve, by their attorney, appeared on the 4th day against Thomas Ryvell of Bukby in Northants, 'Gentilman', in a plea that he render them £40 which he owes them and unjustly witholds etc. And he did not come ... ... sheriff can't find him ...’. ‘CP 40/814 img 1532 d: same as above, so far as I can see it’. Whether or not these records refer to one or two individuals is uncertain, but because the records span 57 years and Thomas would have been at least 77 in 1465 this span tends to suggest there are two. In fact, he would almost certainly be older because in 1408 he has acquired land previously held by William Revell in order to be able to enfeoff Richard son of Joan and Geoffrey in 1408. The gap of some 45 years also tends to suggest there are two individuals but the records may simply have been lost, or not recognised because of the multiplicity of surnames. The combination of the names ‘Edmescote’, ‘Ryvell’ and ‘Reynolde’ and the association with Richard, Joan and Geoffrey d’Edmescote / Ryvell and Buckby strongly point to this Thomas or Thomases being related to them. An obscure Simon Revell ?–1268–1310–? Although several Simon Revells appear in various pedigrees, the independent evidence for them is scant. In February 1288 / 9 it is recorded in an Inquisition Post Mortem held at Worcester that Richard Atchurch (Richard atte Church, Richard de la Chirchard) who was hanged for felony had been holding of Simon Renol (subsequently Simon Revel) a messuage at Suckley. 254 Simon Revel is instructed in the Close Rolls on February 5 th 1291 / 2 to take seisin of the same property, 255 and seisin is recorded in a second IPM held March 28 th 1291 / 2. 256 A Simon Revel, Chaplain, is named in 1302 / 3 as a creditor of ‘Adam de ? Char', and Richard Bardulph, of Herefords’, 257 and it is plausible that one of the debtors is Adam de la Chirchard. Suckley is about 15 miles east from Hereford and nine miles west of Worcester, and some 50 to 70 miles west of the locations with which the Revells are commonly associated at this date. However, this is almost certainly the Sir Simon Rivel who was appointed in 1303 as bailiff to Bishop William Ginsborough responsible for ‘the lands and manors in the county of Gloucester’, and is referred to as ‘Simon Revel, clerk’ in June 1306. In 1306 there is an entry ‘Simon de Edmundescote, on the title of patrimony, approved by the dean of Tredington’. 258 According to Reynolds Register an individual of this name was in 1310 ordained priest from the diocese of Worcester, as follows: 259 ‘Simon de Edmundescote, t. 5 m., of the gift of Ymaygne Vy, p. D. Warwick, swore, content’. Bishop William Ginsborough (Gainsbrough, Gainsborough) who was appointed in 1303 and who died in 1307 is thought to have been from Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, also had land in Warwick. Bishop Ginsborough was succeeded by Bishop Reynolds. It is thus plausible that Sir Simon Revell is connected to the Revells of Warwickshire, possibly a brother or other relative of William Revell of Newbold Revell. A Simon Rivel is mentioned in the Fine Rolls in connection with land at Keleby in Lincolnshire in 1309, 260 and a Simon Ryvel is mentioned in 1309 (at Tipperary) 261 and 1312 (at Dublin) in ‘Calendar of the Justiciary Rolls, or, Proceedings in the Court of the Justiciar of Ireland’ preserved in the Public Record Office of Ireland, but these may be different individuals. Possibly this is the Simon shown (incorrectly in view of his date of birth) as the third son of Sir William Revell, and the supposed ancestor of the Derbyshire Revells, but the only other reference to him so far located is in the Heralds Visitation of 1546 as cited in a book. 262 There would have to be at least one, and probably two further generations between this Simon and the well-documented Thomas Revell of Higham (Derbyshire) who was born in the period 1420 to 1430 (see Part 4). At Cork, a Nich Ryuel is named in 1307, 263 a Thomas Ryuel (junior) is mentioned there in 1307, 264 and a Thomas Ryvel in 1311. 265 At Waterford, an Andrew Ryuel is named in 1307, 266 and a John Ryvel in 1312. 267 A Roger Ryvel is recorded in 1307 as holding land at Incheganelan, 268 and possibly the same person a witness at Kilkenny. 269 A Giles Reuell is mentioned in the Patent Rolls in 1281 as a nominated Attorney to serve in Ireland. 270 A record dated 1306 refers to an Andrew Revell who paid rent to the Prior of St Bartholomew’s in West Smithfield, 271 but this is unlikely to be Andrew recorded in Kilkenny. An Adam Revell, presumably a relative of Simon, is recorded at Suckleye in a deed of exchange with ‘Thomas son of Thomas de Hanleye’ dated March 12 th 1307 / 8, 272 and as a witness in 1320. 273 It might be the same Adam Revel, who in 1300 is a witness to a grant referring to property in Bath, 274 and who in 1331, witnessed a document bearing the seal of ‘Robert de Wynesmor of Lega’. 275 (Lega = Lee or Leigh). Leigh is ca 5 miles from Suckley.
