Geographically, the connection to Lincolnshire is unexpected. However, it is recorded that the earls of Lincoln were the mesne
lords at Buckby, jn Northamptonshire, where the Revells were well-documented. 1 In the period 1160–1163 an Andrea Revel
was a witness to a charter referring to the manor of Knighton (Leicestershisre) held by Robert earl of Leicester of the Bishop of
Lincoln. 2 This is possibly Andrew Revell of Bengeo born in the period 1130 to 1140 — see Table 1b and Part 11
.
The Revells of Lincoln
On January 26 th 1588 / 0 Thomas Revell married Marye Bennet at St Marks and their son Peter Revell was baptised there on
March 12 th 1588 / 9. On December 1 st 1590 William Revell married Susan Watterton at Canwick, less than two miles from
Lincoln. A Hellen Revell, daughter of Em Revell was baptised there on August 4 th 1591. A Mary Ravell married Richard
Hodgson or Halton at St Marks on July 20 th 1594. Peter Revell is recorded as the father of Anne Revell baptised at St John on
the Mount, Lincoln, on July 5 th 1615.
Elizabeth Revell married William Money at St Paul’s Lincoln on August 10 th 1629. A John Revell married Jone Benson at St
Margaret in the Close, Lincoln, on May 8 th 1638.
The Revells of Gainsborough
Gainsborough is some 16 miles north-west of Lincoln. The earliest record at Gainsborough in north Lincolnshire is the marriage
of Henry Revell and Susanna Freeman on July 28 th 1687. They are the parents of Elizabeth Reavill (baptised May 7 th 1688),
Susannah Reavill (baptised December 20 th 1689), Rebeckah Revill (baptised February 5 th 1691 / 2), Henry Reavill (baptised
March 1 st 1692 / 3), Nathaniell Reauill (baptised November 11 th 1694), Alice Reuill (baptised September 22 nd 1698), William
Reavill (baptised August 15 th 1700), William Reavill (baptised January 20 th 1702 / 3) and Mary Reuell (baptised April 30 th
1707).
Lincolnshire Pedigrees contains a record that George Villers of Coningsby, whose will dated July 10 th 1650, married second,
Ann, the widow of —— Revel. 3
Revells of Owston and Crowle
Owston is some six miles north of Gainsborough, and Crowle some 10 miles further north. There is a cluster of records
associated with Owston that suggest the Revells were established here from at least the late 16 th century. The administration of a
William Revell, bachelor of Owston, is dated 1615. 4 The NBI records that he was buried August 25 th 1615. The IGI provides
extracted parish records for the marriages of Alice Revill and Christopher Wilkinson on June 27 th 1613 and Jane Revill and
William Drurie on October 22 nd 1615 who were presumably born late in the 16 th century. The earliest baptisms are for a John
Revell, father of Margaret Revell (baptised October 28 th 1599 and buried January 8 th 1608 / 9), Jane Revell (baptised November
8 th 1601 and buried December 7 th 1601), George Revell (February 27 th 1606 / 7) and Robert Revell (baptised February 2 nd 1602 /
3).
An Alexander Revell married Jane Trowte at Owston on May 25 th 1607 and they are the parents of John Revell (baptised
October 3 rd 1607) and William Revell (Baptised September 9 th 1610). The NBI records the burial on February 24 th 1613 of an
Alexander Revell. Other burials include an unnamed child on April 29 th 1612, Elizabeth Revell on May 6 th 1614 and Ann
Revell on August 4 th 1615.
A Symon Revell married Ann Clarke on September 29 th 1611 and they are the parents of William Revell (baptised June 27 th
1613), Isabell Revell (baptised December 9 th 1615), Marmaduke Revell (baptised April 6 th 1618) and Jane Reavell (baptised
August 27 th 1620). The administration of a Samuel Revell is dated 1649. 5
The will of Marmaduke Revell of Owston, Lincolnshire, dated April 9 th 1659 is only partially legible. It names his eldest son
Marmaduke Revell, younger son Edward Revell, two children of his brother William Revell, and the children of his married
sister Mary *****. The baptisms of his children have not been located, but the baptism of a Marmaduke Revell, dated May 5 th
1700 (born May 2 nd 1700) whose parents are Marmaduke Revell and Margrett, is a putative grandson.
At Crowle, John Revell is recorded as the father of a Robert Revell baptised March 1 st 1608 / 9, Thomas Revell, baptised April
20 th 1620 (buried April 21 st 1620) and Francis Revell baptised August 27 th 1621. Robert Revell is recorded as the father of a
Thomas Revell baptised July 7 th 1620. A John Revell was buried December 4 th 1620. Katherine Revell married Peter Spence
at Crowle on August 22 nd 1631.
Revells of Tetney and Grimsby
Grimsby is some 35 miles north-east of Lincoln, and Tetney some seven miles south of Grimsby. There is a cluster of records
centred on Tetney in north-east Lincolnshire. The first of these is late 12 th century and refers to ‘Reuell de teteneia’ as a witness
of a grant of five acres of meadow near Holton-le Clay, 6 and similarly with regard to land at Humberstone and in the marsh at
Tetney, 7 and he is mentioned in the Pipe Roll for 1202. 8 A Reginaldo Reuell is recorded as a witness to a grant of land at
Theddlethorpe ca 1200, 9 10 and might be the same individual. A Reginaldus Revel (Reynald Revel) is mentioned in several
documents in connection with Embsay Priory, that subsequently became Bolton Priory, dated in the period ca 1120 to 1154, 11
see Part 5.
A Richard Revell was granted by Richard I the manor of Horncastle in Lincolnshire from ca 1193, in addition to holding land at
Downhead in Somerset, 12 and the manors of Langport and Curry Rivell ca 1190. At some date in the period 1196 to 1199, there
is a reference to a Richard Reuell who ‘with the consent of king Richard he has admitted osbert de Bisshoppesduna, clerk, to
the chapelry of Horncastle …’. 13 Strangely, the various histories of the Manor of Horncastle in Lincolnshire make no reference
to the Revells. Horncastle is some 20 miles south of Tetney.
A Willelmo Reuell of Tetney is mentioned many times as a juror at Bradley (some five miles north-west) in the period 1383 to
1396, 14 15 16 17 and presumably was born no later than ca 1363.
A John Revell of Tetney is mentioned in an Inquisition held at Caistor in 1428, 18 and another at Glandford Brigg in 1432, 19 and
in the Close Rolls as holding land at Tetney in 1451, 20 presumably born no later than ca 1408.
A John Revell is recorded as the father of an Elizabeth Revell baptised at Brocklesby on May 10 th 1606. A Marie Reuell
married John Teisdaill at Willoughby on June 1 st 1584. John Revill married Martha Bennyson at Stainton-by-Langwoeth on
May 3 rd 1602. William Revell or Pierson, the son of John Pierson and Suzanna Revell was baptised at Mablethorpe on
December 14 th 1626. Mary Revell married Caleb Mason on August 31 st 1629 at Gainsborough.
Revells of Boston and Fishtoft
Boston is some 45 miles south of Grimsby and Fishtoft is three miles south-east of Boston. A Jaine Revell, the daughter of
Willyam Revell was baptised at Fishtoft on March 10 th 1593 / 4 and buried there on July 26 th 1608. Two other daughters, Ailles
Revell and Susan Revell were baptised there on June 12 th 1597 and July 6 th 1600, respectively, and two sons, Richard Revell
and Peter Revell, were baptised on July 17 th 1603 and in October 1607, respectively. On May 15 th 1614 Annas Revell married
William Casselforth at Fishtoft.
Fishtoft is some 2 miles east of Boston and a transcription of the Boston parish records is available but the name Revell does not
appear before October 17 th 1619 when Ellen Revill married Hugh Morden (Norden). 21 On April 9 th 1637 Elizabeth Revill
widow of John Revill was buried at Boston and on September 20 th 1637 he married Ann Powton there. 22 This is probably the
John Revell who is documented in the Boston Port Books in the period 1633 to 1639. For example, on June 6 th and July 12 th
1633 John Revell, Master of The Violet of Boston, 70 tons burthen, sailed to Amsterdam, with or on behalf of merchants John
Ampleford and William Turpin. 23 John Revell is also associated with the Boston vessels Post (25 tons) and Katherine (8 tons),
and is recorded sailing also to Calais and Rotterdam. John Ampleford was mayor of Boston in 1603. 24
A Richard Revell and Jellyan of Firthbanke, are recorded at Boston as parents of William Revill (November 8 th 1635) and
Anne Revill (November 25 th 1638). 25 Firthbanke is possibly Frithbank, some two miles north of Boston and some six miles
north of Fishtoft. The burial of Julyan Rewell, wife of Richard Rewell, at Sibsey some four miles north-east, on April 13 th
1646 is almost certainly connected. This Richard Revell is possibly the son of William Revell of Fishtoft baptised there 1603,
see above.
At Skirbeck, one mile from Boston, Samuel Revell and his wife Anne are recorded as the parents of Anne Revell baptised on
March 24 th 1632 / 3, and he is possibly the Samuel Revell buried at Sibsey, four miles north of Boston, on August 16 th 1644, and
Richard Revill and his wife Ann are recorded as the parents of Susanna Revill (October 24 th 1635), Sara Revill (July 6 th 1645
and buried August 6 th 1647) William Revill (March 7 th 1649 / 50).
.
At Fosdyke, some eight miles south of Boston, Jane Rewell married John Wightman on May 8 th 1639.
Revells around Bourne and Witham-on-the-Hill
The earliest of the southern Lincolnshire records found so far is dated 1312, and refers to ‘Wyma’ and ‘Suthwyme’ that
correspond to the present day Witham.
‘William Rynel of Wyma to receive for life in the same house 3d. daily for his food, one mark yearly for other necessaries, and
an old garment of the brethren at Christmas yearly, 2d. daily for the food of his groom, 5s. yearly for the stipend of his groom,
who is to serve in the house; for one messuage and 24 acres of land and meadow in Suthwyme; and to give them at his death one
mark’. 26
Bourne is some 24 miles south-west of Boston and Witham a further four miles south-west. In 1359 the Patent Rolls refer to a
John Ryvell of Folkingham, some 13 miles north of Witham. 27
The next record is the baptism of Emme Revell, daughter of John Revell, baptised on September 25 th 1563 at Greatford, some 5
miles south east from Careby. Saloman Revell son of Bartle (Bartholomew) Revell was baptised at Careby, two miles from
Witham-on-the-Hill, on December 22 nd 1593. A daughter Elizabeth Revell was baptised there on February 25 th 1599 / 1600.
Bartholomew Revill was buried at Careby on January 10 th 1611 / 2. Ann Revill married Thomas Hutchinson on October 24 th
1626. Soloman Reuill married Emmot Somerbie at Little Bytham, one mile north of Careby, in November 1633 and their sons
John Reuill, Richard Reuill and Henry Revell were baptised at Careby on October 26 th 1634, January 13 th 1638 / 9 and April
9 th 1643, respectively. Their daughter Anne Revill was baptised October 30 th 1636. Their son Richard Revill was buried
August 6 th 1641.
Thomae Reuell married Elizabetha Presgraue on August 24 th 1602 and they are recorded as the parents of a Henericus Reuell,
baptised at Witham-on-the-Hill on January 6 th 1604 / 5 and buried there on January 20 th 1604 / 5. Richardus Revell married
Elizabetha Watson on May 13 th 1605 and they are recorded there as the parents of Agneta Revell (March 14 th 1606 / 7),
Elizabetha Revell (April 9 th 1608), Richardus Revell (April 22 nd 1610) and Johannes Revell (February 2 nd 1613 / 4). Isabella
Revell married Robertus Hicson on October 11 th 1608 and an Eliza. Revell married Willimus Stanton on January 27 th 1617 / 8.
Agneta Reuill married Johes Stringer on November 27 th 1627. A Geoffrey Revell, gent., of Toft, ca one mile from Witham, is
28 29
recorded in 1649.
The will of a William Revell of Tallington, some five miles east of Stamford, is dated 1562. 30 Grace Revell married William
Coper at Stamford St John about 7 miles from Witham in 1577. Henry Revell is recorded as the father of Brigget Revell
aptised at Stamford St John on August 24 th 1606. In 1609 a Robert Revell, vintner, was established at Stamford, and the same
document refers to John Balguy, son of Thomas, deceased. 31 This Thomas Balguy was buried at Stamford on November 3 rd
1607. 32 A feoffment dated 1614 also refers to them as follows: 33
‘1. Thomas Earl of Exeter; William Lord Burghley; John Browne of Counthorpe, gent.; William Erdale of Stamford Baron,
clerk; feoffees of William Lacy of Deeping St James, gent.
2. William Lord Rosse; John Wyngfeild of Thekencote, esq.; John Browne esq.; Simon Reade, clerk; Roger Clarke, gent; John
Balguy, son of Thomas, deceased; Robert Revell, vintner; William Diglyn, yeoman and churchwarden; Ralph Haseldyne alias
Carter, tanner; Toby Norris, bellfounder; William Lane, glazier; Henry Harryson, weaver; and Thomas Willoughby, son of
Thomas, musician; all of Stamford’.
These Balguys are descended from the Balguys of the Peak, 34 and are possibly connected with the Yorkshire Revells.
A William Revell married Joane Acton at Stamford St Mary on June 9 th 1631, and their daughter Margaret Renell was baptised
there on December 29 th 1632 and son John Renell on March 5 th 1636 / 7.
Bartholomew Revell married Anne Booth at Sempringham, some nine miles from Bourne, on June 5 th 1615 and Anne Revill
married Daniell Benson on February 28 th 1624 / 5. On July 6 th 1617 Elizabeth Revell married Jusabassed Devell at Spalding,
some nine miles east of Bourne. The will of a Bart Revell of Pointon, Lincolnshire, is dated 1624. 35
The will of a William Revell of Tallington, some five miles east of Stamford, is dated 1562. 36
