Welcome and opening by
Charles HAGGETT
Commander Port
Stephens LAC
Review minutes and
actions from previous
meeting
Overview of new Police
Station
Decisions Taken / LAC Response
• Meeting started at 10:05am – CH acknowledged the Worimi
people as the original landowners
• CH moved that the minutes from the last meeting be accepted:
Moved: Doreen Bradley; Seconded: Diane Wilson
Report on actions from last meeting:
1. Trail Bikes: Looking at the Tilligerry area to set up a track. There
would be a fee to use the track which would cover insurance
etc. Will talk to the Worrimi Land Council at the next meeting
scheduled for 24 February 2010
2. New Year’s Eve: CH gave an update on New Year’s Eve.
Police were on the ground all the time. There were 26 arrests.
The strategies used were very successful and positive. The
same template was used for Australia Day. Visitors were very
happy with the presence. There was an unfortunate incident
at Tea Gardens (will address next year)
3. CH advised no feedback yet from the issue raised of the
dangerous intersection in Heatherbrae at Hank Street (near
Maccas) where dangerous U-turns are happening especially in
the mornings – has heard the RTA are proposing to put in lights
4. No further details on the three kids sleeping in the skate park at
Anna Bay, Police have been attending at different hours and
haven’t seen anyone - there are a few drinkers in the street
5. James Campbell provided an update on Snak & Rap and
advised that it is still working well and attracting high numbers
CH advised they had moved into the Leisure Centre temporarily whilst
the new station was being built. CH is still working in Beresfield but will
move to the Leisure Centre in three weeks. He thanked Port Stephens
Council for their support and advised the new station should be
completed around December 2010 and will have custody services.
PSC would be able to provide pictures of how the station would look
when completed. It will not have a glass frontage.
With Police permission CM offered to put a picture of the façade on
display in Market Place.
2a) Overview of crime in
the Port Stephens LAC by
Crime Analyst Graham
BOOTH
Member
Local crime statistics were discussed and major changes noted.
Issues Raised/Response
Doreen Bradley • Appreciates extra patrols around Tilligerry. Saturday night
needs a patrol car around the skate park as furniture and
wood chips being burnt. Trail bikes still a problem. Advertising
Safety for Seniors workshop for 9 th March and 10 th May morning
tea with a solicitor. Compliments to the police. PF will talk to
the Examiner about high range PCA charges there. CH: HWP
have key to LTP station and use it to process PCA charges –
they usually stay there for a while
thanked them. Next week S&R at Anna Bay Skate Park
• Anna Bay is fine. Graffiti and bikes are down. There are
speeding bikes on the beach at night. Council has demolished
the football grounds on the roundabout
• Spoke about the improvement in behaviour of youth at
Marketplace because of the presence and efforts of the
Police, in particular Emilie Deacon, Acting YLO; spoke about
the trouble happening at the Williams Street entrance to the
shopping centre;
• What can Police do to young drinkers? They can pour out the
drink, ask them where they got it and because they have a
duty of care they often need to take them home
• Seats out the front of marketplace are causing conflict
because so many people can sit there and they are
intimidating people, especially seniors;, can be moved
temporarily to see how it goes. Advised there is a budget for
Graffiti Management Plan for next year. Sunday 9 th May 2010 is
Graffiti Clean-Up Day. It will be publicised through Council and
kits etc offered
• Presented a petition to the Police from Anna Bay residents and
it has also been sent to MPs. However, they said that after
hearing at this meeting what is happening behind the scenes,
they are not as concerned and realise that the Police are
aware of most crime problems. They will make sure the
residents contact the Police and report all crime. Property theft
and damage folder to be given to PF. KB cleaned up some of
the graffiti at Anna Bay and they commended and
congratulated Keith and the Graffiti Action Team
• Keith tabled a report on the graffiti removal which has been
carried out by the PSGAT. The area looks very good now and
they are keeping on top of it
• Advised there is a needle exchange at Raymond Terrace
Neighbourhood Centre; Residents think there is a drug ring in
Ash Street/Bagnall St Soldiers Point; Inaugural meeting of
Tamara Youth Inc on 12 th March
• Advised that a Community Awareness Policing Program to be
held three or four times per year for 15-20 people. Will be
nominating influential people from the community to attend so
they can spread the word
• On behalf of the residents of Clarence Town she asked when
the Police Station there is opening. There is more graffiti
occurring in Dungog area
