RC Makati 40th Charter Anniversary Celebrations
· Our sister club RC Makati was chartered in 1966 and will thus be celebrating its 40th
charter anniversary in March. Our club has been invited to participate in the celebration,
and the tentative programme is as follows:
- 08 March - arrival and welcome dinner
- 09 March - visit to RC Makati's various community service projects
- 10 March - golf game (morning)
- 11 March - departure
- Anniversary ball (evening)
· IS Director Horst announces that he would like to 'assemble a team' from our club to travel
to Manila for what promises to be an excellent fellowship and high-class dinner event.
· Those interested, and especially those who have long-standing connections with RC
Makati, please contact IS Director Horst so that planning can take place without too much
delay.
72nd RI District 3300 Assembly
· The District Assembly is a platform that covers four days of training for Club Office
bearers and Rotarians.
· DGE Dato’ Jimmy Lim from our Club will be hosting this event. Let’s attend in strength to
support him and be proud of our home-grown DG for 2006-07:
- Date: 6th to 9th April 2006 (Thursday-Sunday)
- Venue: Holiday Villa Hotel, Subang
- Thursday–Friday (6th-7th April): Training for in-coming Club Presidents, Secretaries &
Treasurers.
- Saturday–Sunday (8th - 9th April): All other Office Bearers & Rotarians.

ISLAMIC BANKING & FINANCE

Rtn Ridza patiently explaining different forms of banking
Rtn Ridza is well qualified to speak on this topic as he has
been involved in Islamic banking set ups since its early days
in Malaysia. While he is still busy in our country with these
ongoing efforts, he has also been called overseas to advise
and consult with other Asean nations on how to establish
Islamic banking.
Rtn Ridza gave a comprehensive (at least to the uninitiated
like this editor) list of what comprises Islamic banking tenets
and products. He also explained how some offerings fully
complied with religious requirements while others bordered on
debatable boundaries. Nonetheless, this is a hot topic for the
banking and finance industry these days, and Rtn Ridza is
kept very busy at work in handling these consulting needs.

The Million Dollar Questions I am sure one sometimes asks
oneself are…
“Do I matter?”
“Have I made a difference?”
“Did I touch someone?”
“Will anyone remember me?”
Ambition driven by self-doubt and perhaps ego can be a
compelling force for progress. Hopefully the energy generated
is utilized for good and beneficial to all, and not just narrowly
to one or a few selected recipients. So Rotary allows us to
channel this ambition to “Do Good” and“Contribute to Society”
in an effective manner. As we ponder this wonderful
opportunity given us by Rotary, it comes to mind that we
should strive to “Live a Life that Matters”. Aptly, PDG Dato’
Mus recently sent me email with just that topic so let’s all
read it together and enjoy…
LIVE A LIFE THAT MATTERS

Live a life that matters.
Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten,
will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to
irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will
finally disappear.
So, too, your hopes, ambitions, plans, and to-do lists will
expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade
away.
It won't matter where you come from, or on what side of the
tracks you lived, at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin colour will be irrelevant.
So what will matter? How will the value of your days be
measured?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built;
Not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage
or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to
emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how
many will feel a lasting loss when you're gone.
What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that
live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by
whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstances but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

District 3300 Youth Exchange Program

An important part of the New Generations avenue of service is
Youth Exchange, a structured programme of RI adopted by
the RI Board in 1974. It gives youth, between the ages of 15
and 19, an opportunity to visit or study in a country other than
their own. Long-term exchanges allow the student to study in
another country for an academic year. Its purpose is the
advancement of international understanding and goodwill
(MOP 2004).
to send Elizabeth off on her year-long visit to Japan. She will
be hosted by RC Gifu West (District 2630) and is expected to
stay with 4 host families. The city of Gifu is the capital of Gifu
Prefecture on Honshu Island. It has a population of about
400,000 and is located about 100 km northwest of Nagoya.

During RY 2005/06, RC Kuala Lumpur DiRaja is the sponsor
club for an outbound student and the host club for an inbound
student.
Under the requisite selection procedure, 19-year old Elizabeth
Yeo Su Lin was picked to be our outbound student, and on 24
January Rtns Atttan Akmar, Justin Teoh and Horst Wippern -
together with District YEP Coordinator Christie - were at KLIA
Elizabeth is expected to report regularly to the club via New
Generations Director Justin.
Our inbound student, sponsored by RC Gifu West, is
expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur sometime in March. She
will be hosted by the family of Rtn Reiner Allgeier, Elizabeth's
parents Mr & Mrs Yeo, and the families of PP Dato'
Kamarulzaman und Rtn Jayabalan.
Why I Am a Rotarian…

When I was offered membership in a Rotary Club, I
remembered my father, who was a Rotarian, always speaking
well of Rotary, never in detail, but always in the positive.
Presented with the opportunity to help others in society less
fortunate than I, it was not very difficult to accept such
membership.
I am fully aware that, like many others, my contribution will
only be a drop in the ocean. However, as Mother Teresa said,
“Without that drop, the ocean will never be full.”
…That is why I am a Rotarian.
