THE OBJECT OF ROTARY
The Object of Rotary is to
encourage and foster the ideal of
service as a basis of worthy
enterprise and, in particular, to
encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of
acquaintance as an opportunity
for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards
in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all
useful occupations, and the
dignifying of each Rotarian's
occupation as an opportunity to
serve society;
THIRD. The application of the
ideal of service in each Rotarian's
personal, business, and
community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of
international understanding,
goodwill, and peace through a
world fellowship of business and
professional persons united in the
ideal of service.
THE FOUR-WAY TEST
Of the things we think, say or do:
1) Is it the TRUTH?
2) Is it FAIR to all
concerned?
3) Will it build GOODWILL
and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to
all concerned?
Several years ago, I had a man
seeking asparagus for a friend
who had cancer. He gave me a
photocopied copy of an article,
entitled, `Asparagus for cancer '
printed in Cancer News Journal,
December 1979.
I will share it here, just as it was
shared with me: 'I am a
biochemist, and have specialized
in the relation of diet to health for
over 50 years.
Several years ago, I learned of the
discovery of Richard R.Vensal,
D.D.S. that asparagus might cure
cancer. Since then, I have worked
with him on his project. We have
accumulated a number of
favorable case histories.
Here are a few examples:
Case No. 1, A man with an almost
hopeless case of Hodgkin's
disease (cancer of the lymph
glands) who was completely
incapacitated.
Within 1 year of starting the
asparagus therapy, his doctors
were unable to detect any signs of
cancer, and he was back on a
schedule of strenuous exercise.
Case No. 2, A successful
businessman, 68 years old, who
suffered from cancer of the
bladder for 16 years, and after
years of medical treatments,
including radiation without
improvement, he went on
asparagus. Within 3 months,
examinations revealed that his
bladder tumor had disappeared
and that his kidneys were normal.
Case No. 3, A man who had lung
cancer. On March 5th 1971, he
was put on the operating table
where they found lung cancer so
widely spread that it was
inoperable. The surgeon sewed
him up and declared his case
hopeless. On April 5th he heard
about the asparagus therapy and
immediately started taking it. By
August, x-ray pictures revealed
that all signs of the cancer had
disappeared. He is back at his
regular business routine. *
*Case No. 4, A woman who was
troubled for a number of years
with skin cancer. She finally
developed different skin cancers
which were diagnosed by asking
specialist as advanced. Within 3
months after starting on
asparagus, her skin specialist said
that her skin looked fine and no
more skin lesions. This woman
reported that the asparagus
therapy also cured her kidney
disease, which started in 1949.
She had over 10 operations for
kidney stones, and was receiving
government disability payments
for an inoperable, terminal, kidney
condition. She attributes the cure
of this kidney trouble entirely to
the asparagus.
I was not surprised at this result,
as `The elements of Materia
Medica', edited in 1854 by a
Professor at the University of
Pennsylvania stated that
asparagus was used as a popular
remedy for kidney stones. He
even referred to experiments, in
1739, on the power of asparagus
in dissolving stones.
14 April – Sungai Lui RCC English language prep day 2 for Primary
School children.
We would have other case
histories but the medical
establishment has interfered with
our obtaining some of the records.
I am therefore appealing to
readers to spread this good news
and help us to gather a large
number of case histories that will
overwhelm the medical skeptics
about this unbelievably simple and
natural remedy. For the treatment,
asparagus should be cooked
before using, and therefore
canned asparagus is just as good
as fresh.
I have corresponded with the two
leading canners of asparagus,
Giant Giant and Stokely, and I am
satisfied that these brands contain
no pesticides or preservatives.
* * PROCEDURE:
1) Place the cooked asparagus in
a blender and liquefy to make a
puree, and store in the
refrigerator.
2012/13 Rotary Installation Charity Banquet on Sunday 15th July,
Tan Sir Rainer Althoff informed members to block their calendar on
15th July for this Installation Dinner Event at The Shangri-La. It
will be a grand event befitting to our club.
The programme for the Banquet will be interesting and entertaining,
with an eight course Chinese-English fusion dinner and a
performance by renowned entertainers.
The projects planned for the new rotary year are as follows:
1. To provide and equip the kitchen, dining hall and the laundry area
for the rotary BRDB Childrens’ Residence, a new home for 100
abandoned children in Sri Kembangan, Serdang.
2. To promote good health and exercise through provision of skipping
ropes to rural and urban disadvantaged children and obese people
which will help to prevent increasing health risk from Heart, Diabetes,
Cancer and other Sickness.
3. To provide a fund named “Rotary Cancer Aid Fund” to provide aid
for drugs and treatment for cancer victims.
4. To provide annual scholarships for children from low income
families.
5. To provide assistance to the handicapped, disadvantaged and old
folks to our community through the project “My Wish”.
(Continued on page 8)
Patients usually show some
improvement in from 2-4 weeks. It
can be diluted with water and
used as a cold or hot drink. This
suggested dosage is based on
present experience, but certainly
larger amounts can do no harm
and may be needed in some
cases.
As a biochemist I am convinced of
the old saying that `what cures
can prevent'. Based on this theory,
my wife and I have been using
asparagus puree as a beverage
with our meals. We take 2
tablespoons diluted in water to
suit our taste with breakfast and
with dinner. I take mine hot and
my wife prefers hers cold.
For years we have made it a
practice to have blood surveys
taken as part of our regular
checkups.
The last blood survey, taken by a
medical doctor who specializes in
the nutritional approach to health,
showed substantial improvements
in all categories over the last one,
and we can attribute these
improvements to nothing but the
asparagus drink...
As a biochemist, I have made an
extensive study of all aspects of
cancer, and all of the proposed
cures. As a result, I am convinced
that asparagus fits in better with
the latest theories about cancer.
(Continued from page 7)
Asparagus contains a good supply
of protein called histones, which
are believed to be active in
controlling cell growth. For that
reason, I believe asparagus can
be said to contain a substance
that I call cell growth normalizer.
That accounts for its action on
cancer and inacting as a general
body tonic. In any event,
regardless of theory, asparagus
used as we suggest, is a
harmless substance.
The FDA cannot prevent you from
using it and it may do you much
good.. It has been reported by the
US National Cancer Institute, that
asparagus is the highest tested
food containing glutathione, which
is considered one of the body's
most potent anticarcinogens and
antioxidants.
Please spread the news...
...the most unselfish act one can
ever do is paying forward all the
kindness one has received even
to the most undeserved person *
Dr. Kent Woo
Allergies & Immunology
Allergy:
An allergy is a hypersensitivity
disorder of the immune system.
SPEAKER FOR TODAY
Dato’ Dr Prakash introduced the Speaker.
Allergic reactions occur when a person's immune system reacts to
normally harmless substances in the environment. A substance that
causes a reaction is called an allergen. These reactions are acquired,
predictable, and rapid. Allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity
and is formally called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. Allergic
reactions are distinctive because of excessive activation of certain
white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody
called Immunoglobulin E. This reaction results in an inflammatory
response which can range from uncomfortable to dangerous.
Mild allergies like hay fever are very common in the human population
and cause symptoms such as red eyes, itchiness, and runny nose,
eczema, hives, hay fever, or an asthma attack. Allergies can play a
major role in conditions such as asthma. In some people, severe
allergies to environmental or dietary allergens or to medication may
result in life-threatening reactions called anaphylaxis. Food allergies,
and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and
bees are often associated with these severe reactions.
LAUGHTER
A married couple had been out
shopping at the mall for most of
the afternoon, suddenly, the wife
realized that her husband had
"disappeared".
The somewhat irate spouse called
her husbands cell phone and
demanded: Where the hell are
you?
Husband: Darling you remember
that Jewellery shop where you
saw the Diamond Necklace and
totally fell in love with it and I didn't
have money that time and said
Baby it'll be yours one day.
Wife, with a smile blushing: Yes, I
remember that my Love.
Husband: Well, I'm in the Pub
next to that shop.
A variety of tests exist to diagnose allergic conditions. These include
placing possible allergens on the skin and looking for a reaction such
as swelling. Blood tests can also be done to look for an allergenspecific
IgE.
SIGNS & SYMPTONS
Treatments for allergies include avoiding known allergens, use of
medications such as anti-histamines that specifically prevent allergic
reactions, steroids that modify the immune system in general, and
medications such as decongestants that reduce the symptoms. Many
of these medications are taken by mouth, though epinephrine, which
is used to treat anaphylactic reactions, is injected. Immunotherapy
uses injected allergens to desensitize the body's response.
Many allergens such as dust or pollen are airborne particles. In these
cases, symptoms arise in areas in contact with air, such as eyes,
nose, and lungs. For instance, allergic rhinitis, also known as hay
fever, causes irritation of the nose, sneezing, itching, and redness of
the eyes. Inhaled allergens can also lead to asthmatic symptoms,
caused by narrowing of the airways (bronchoconstriction) and
increased production of mucus in the lungs, shortness of breath
(dyspnea), coughing and wheezing.
Aside from these ambient allergens, allergic reactions can result from
foods, insect stings, and reactions to medications like aspirin and
antibiotics such as penicillin. Symptoms of food allergy include
abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, itchy skin, and swelling
of the skin during hives. Food allergies rarely cause respiratory
(asthmatic) reactions, or rhinitis. Insect stings, antibiotics, and certain
medicines produce a systemic allergic response that is also called
anaphylaxis; multiple organ systems can be affected, including the
digestive system, the respiratory system, and the circulatory system.
IMMUNOLOGY
Immunology is a branch of biomedical science that covers the study
of all aspects of the immune system in all organisms. It deals with the
physiological functioning of the immune system in states of both
health and diseases; malfunctions of the immune system in
immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities,
immune deficiency, transplant rejection); the physical, chemical and
physiological characteristics of the components of the immune system
in vitro, in situ, and in vivo. Immunology has applications in several
disciplines of science, and as such is further divided.
Even before the concept of immunity (from immunis, Latin for
"exempt") was developed, numerous early physicians characterized
organs that would later prove to be part of the immune system. The
key primary lymphoid organs of the immune system are the thymus
and bone marrow, and secondary lymphatic tissues such as spleen,
tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, and skin and liver.
When health conditions warrant, immune system organs including the
thymus, spleen, portions of bone marrow, lymph nodes and
secondary lymphatic tissues can be surgically excised for examination
while patients are still alive.
Many components of the immune system are actually cellular in
nature and not associated with any specific organ but rather are
embedded or circulating in various tissues located throughout the
body.
Classical immunology ties in with the fields of epidemiology and
medicine. It studies the relationship between the body systems,
pathogens, and immunity. The earliest written mention of immunity
can be traced back to the plague of Athens in 430 BCE. Thucydides
noted that people who had recovered from a previous bout of the
disease could nurse the sick without contracting the illness a second
time. Many other ancient societies have references to this
phenomenon, but it was not until the 19th and 20th centuries before
the concept developed into scientific theory.
The study of the molecular and cellular components that comprise the
immune system, including their function and interaction, is the central
science of immunology.
Clinical immunology is the study of diseases caused by disorders of
the immune system (failure, aberrant action, and malignant growth of
the cellular elements of the system). It also involves diseases of other
systems, where immune reactions play a part in the pathology and
clinical features.
