It was a tightly packed fellowship programme that awaited the visitors, starting with a fellowship dinner cum matched club
signing on Thursday. Then the induction banquet on Friday, which was attended by about 400 club members, visitors from
(overseas) sister and (local) brother clubs, and invited guests. As usual, the function was conducted with style and
elegance, and the entertainment was provided by Makati Rotarians and their spouses.
There was little rest on Saturday as the RCKL contingent was hosted by PP Carlos Del Rosario and spouse Mariza to a
lunch at their residence, and the day was rounded of with a dinner at the residence Rtn Jun Rojas and his spouse Pina with
a good attendance from Makati Rotarians and their spouses.
It was fellowship at its best, something our club members should try emulate!
Apart from a memento from Pres. Attan to Pres. Pepito, the club donated US$ 500 to a worthwhile project and this was
topped up by a personal donation of another US$ 500 from RCKL Rotarians.
ROTARY IN THE REGION
RC Madras Has Its First Women President
Recently, the Rotary Club of Madras (District 3230 / India – ed.) saw the dawn of a new era. Seventy-eight years after its
inception, the club elected a woman to the post of President, with Indra Subramanyam taking over the baton from the
outgoing President of the Club, Ravi Katari.
Mr. Katari put it succinctly: “It is a special day for us, as it is the first time we are installing a lady president. It is a milestone
and it’s been a long time in coming…”
Ms. Subramanyam is the Managing Director of Ehrlich Laboratory, a 70-year-old institution. She has held the post for 10
years, having been a director for 15 years before that.
District Governor of RI District 3230, J.B. Kamdar, said, while introducing the new president, that it was worth waiting 78
years for the right person, and the right person to claim this honour was indeed Ms. Subramanyam.
In her inaugural speech as the 79th President of the Club, a beaming Ms. Subramanyam said “I’m a confident president,
thanks to my board members, all of whom voluntarily took up there posts.” She added that in the Rotary Club achievement
was secondary and bonding primary. “Your reward in this work is the unparalleled joy you get…we should enjoy Rotary,”
she said.
The ceremony also served as a forum for the outgoing team to detail the achievements of the last year. Outgoing secretary
of the club, Vasanthi Vasudev, took the audience through some of the highlights. In addition, awards were presented to
several Rotarians for their outstanding achievements over the last year.
THE WORLD OF ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
A Life-Changing Gift
In Australia a cow is just another animal but in Uganda it can signify wealth, prosperity and long-term security.
So when the Rotary Club of Healesville (District 9810 / Australia – ed.) donated a milking cow to a needy widow and her
family in the small village of Munyonyo (Uganda – ed.), it was a life changing gift.
Rotarian Wilma Best was in Uganda as guest of honour at the Golden Jubilee of the Rotary Club of Kampala (District 9200
/ Uganda – ed.) and to personally hand over the cow on behalf of the Rotary Club of Healesville as part of their International
Humanitarian commitment.
“This was a very rewarding experience, to see the joy on the faces of the entire family,” Ms Best said.
“This lady lost her husband and six of her children to AIDS and now has to care for the 11 young ones including her
orphaned grandchildren.”
Ms Best said as small as the gift may seem in Australian terms, it would actually provide a future for these people in
Uganda.
“The people of the village of Munyonyo are deprived and the Rotary gift of a milking cow to this one family is making an
enormous difference to their lives, giving a supply of milk, the excess of which may be sold providing a small income for
food or other uses such as schooling for children,” she said.
The Rotary Club of Healesville worked in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kampala and other international and
community committees on the difficult task of selecting just one family from a long list of needy people.
“An ideal objective would be to work towards providing a herd of cows for the village,” Ms Best said. “But we are working
one cow at a time for now.”
