1.1 Town and country - nationwide<br />

Towns <strong>in</strong> Ireland<br />

<strong>Census</strong> 2006 revealed that Drogheda had narrowly replaced Dundalk as the largest town <strong>in</strong> the<br />

State. <strong>Census</strong> <strong>2011</strong> results show that Drogheda has ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed this position with 38,578<br />

persons, Dundalk was <strong>in</strong> second place with 37,816 persons.<br />

The largest town <strong>in</strong> Connacht was Sligo with a population of 19,452 while Letterkenny was the<br />

biggest town <strong>in</strong> Ulster (part of) with 19,588 persons enumerated there <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Saggart <strong>in</strong> South Dubl<strong>in</strong> was the fastest grow<strong>in</strong>g town between 2006 and <strong>2011</strong> when its<br />

population <strong>in</strong>creased by almost 150 per cent from 868 <strong>in</strong> 2006 to 2,144 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, a rise of 1,276<br />

persons.<br />

Population density <strong>in</strong> Ireland<br />

Population density measures the number of persons occupy<strong>in</strong>g a geographical area <strong>in</strong><br />

proportion to the size of that area. The population density for the State <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> was 67 persons<br />

per km2, up from 62 persons per km2 recorded <strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />

The average population density <strong>in</strong> urban areas was 1,736 persons per km2 compared to 26<br />

persons per km2 <strong>in</strong> rural areas.<br />

The more densely populated areas are predom<strong>in</strong>antly located with<strong>in</strong> the Greater Dubl<strong>in</strong> Area<br />

or GDA (i.e. Dubl<strong>in</strong> City, F<strong>in</strong>gal, South Dubl<strong>in</strong>, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Meath, Kildare and<br />

Wicklow).<br />
