Private households<br />
In the census, a private household is def<strong>in</strong>ed as either one person liv<strong>in</strong>g alone or a group of<br />
people liv<strong>in</strong>g at the same address with common housekeep<strong>in</strong>g arrangements. A household can<br />
conta<strong>in</strong> one or more families.<br />
Nationwide, the number of private households <strong>in</strong>creased by 60.7 per cent s<strong>in</strong>ce 1991, from<br />
1,029,084 to 1,654,208 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>. Over the same period the average household size decreased<br />
from 3.3 persons per household to 2.7 driven by the grow<strong>in</strong>g number of one person<br />
households and fall<strong>in</strong>g family size.<br />
The number of private households <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> was 23,672 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, an <strong>in</strong>crease of 14.6 per<br />
cent from 2006 (20,734).<br />
Private households <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> are broken down by type <strong>in</strong> the follow<strong>in</strong>g table. The most<br />
common is ‘husband, wife and children’, followed by s<strong>in</strong>gle person households.<br />
