Marital breakdown <strong>in</strong>creases<br />

The number of separated and divorced people <strong>in</strong>creased by 22.3 per cent between 2006 and<br />

<strong>2011</strong> from 166,797 to 203,964. Two thirds of the <strong>in</strong>crease (24,784) was among those aged 55<br />

and over.<br />

In <strong>Roscommon</strong>, the number of separated and divorced people <strong>in</strong>creased by 34 per cent.<br />

Lone parents<br />

The number of lone parent families stood at 215,315 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> of which 186,284 were mothers<br />

and 29,031 were fathers. The majority, 124,765, had just one child.<br />

In <strong>Roscommon</strong>, there were a total of 2,629 lone families <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, an <strong>in</strong>crease of 20.5 per cent<br />

over 2006 (2,181):<br />

Lone father families numbered 394 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> – an <strong>in</strong>crease of 20.5% over 2006.<br />

Lone mother families numbered 2,235 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong> – also an <strong>in</strong>crease of 20.5%.<br />
