High level of outright ownership <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong><br />

Counties <strong>in</strong> the Greater Dubl<strong>in</strong> Area had the highest percentage of houses and apartments<br />

where the owner had an exist<strong>in</strong>g loan or mortgage.<br />

Meath, where 48.7 per cent of all owner-occupied dwell<strong>in</strong>gs had a mortgage, came first <strong>in</strong> this<br />

category <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>. F<strong>in</strong>gal (47.8%) and Kildare (46.7%) also had high rates of households owned<br />

with a loan or mortgage.<br />

The western counties had the largest rate of households where the owner had no loan or<br />

mortgage: almost 45 per cent of houses and apartments <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> were owned outright.<br />

Rise <strong>in</strong> number of households with a mortgage headed by persons not <strong>in</strong> employment<br />

The largest growth occurred <strong>in</strong> Laois where the number of mortgaged dwell<strong>in</strong>gs with the<br />

householder out of work rose from 195 <strong>in</strong> 2006 to 1,186 <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, a 508 per cent rise.<br />

<strong>Roscommon</strong> (467%), Leitrim (418%) and Offaly (413%) also experienced significant rises over<br />

the five year period.<br />

One <strong>in</strong> seven households <strong>in</strong> Donegal which were owned with a loan or mortgage had the head<br />

of household recorded as be<strong>in</strong>g out of work, mak<strong>in</strong>g it the worst affected county <strong>in</strong> the State.<br />

Other counties which were most impacted by the householder be<strong>in</strong>g unemployed or look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for their first job were Wexford (12.8%), Offaly (12.5%) and Monaghan (11.9%).<br />

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown (4.2%) recorded the lowest proportion of mortgaged households<br />

with the head of household out of work <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
