Dwell<strong>in</strong>gs have more room over the years<br />

A question relat<strong>in</strong>g to the number of rooms with<strong>in</strong> each household has traditionally been asked<br />

on the census form. In <strong>2011</strong>, the respondent was required to state the number of rooms<br />

exclud<strong>in</strong>g bathrooms, toilets, kitchenettes, offices, utility rooms, consult<strong>in</strong>g rooms, shops, halls,<br />

land<strong>in</strong>gs and rooms that can only be used for storage such as cupboards.<br />

New homes<br />

In Laois, 18.1 per cent of all occupied dwell<strong>in</strong>gs with<strong>in</strong> the county were built s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006.<br />

Longford (15.8%) and Cavan (15%) came next <strong>in</strong> the proportion of new homes built s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006.<br />

12.9 per cent of households <strong>in</strong> <strong>Roscommon</strong> were built s<strong>in</strong>ce 2006.<br />

Limerick City (4.9%) had the lowest rate of <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> homes constructed between 2006 and<br />

<strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Significant growth <strong>in</strong> rented households<br />

A total of 474,788 households were <strong>in</strong> rented accommodation <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, a considerable rise of<br />

47 per cent from 323,007 <strong>in</strong> 2006. The share of households that were rent<strong>in</strong>g was 29 per cent<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, up from 22 per cent recorded <strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />

Despite the number of owner occupied dwell<strong>in</strong>gs ris<strong>in</strong>g by 5.3 per cent between 2006 and<br />

<strong>2011</strong>, the strong growth <strong>in</strong> rented accommodation has caused the overall home ownership<br />

rate to drop sharply from 74.7 per cent to 69.7 per cent.<br />
