Le<strong>in</strong>ster is the only prov<strong>in</strong>ce with un<strong>in</strong>terrupted population growth over the entire period 1926<br />
to <strong>2011</strong> with its population more than doubl<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g that period. Munster’s population,<br />
although experienc<strong>in</strong>g periods of decl<strong>in</strong>e up to the early 1960s experienced more modest<br />
growth overall.<br />
In contrast, however, the populations of Connacht and Ulster (part) experienced more severe<br />
population decl<strong>in</strong>e cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g until the 1970s. In fact, the populations of both prov<strong>in</strong>ces are<br />
still slightly lower than <strong>in</strong> 1926 hav<strong>in</strong>g experienced slower and more erratic recovery with most<br />
notable growth <strong>in</strong> the 30-54 year age groups.<br />

More women than men?<br />
Up to the mid-1980’s the trend was for more men than women <strong>in</strong> the State, though the ratio<br />
varied greatly by prov<strong>in</strong>ce with Le<strong>in</strong>ster hav<strong>in</strong>g consistently fewer males. S<strong>in</strong>ce the mid-1980s<br />
the overall trend has reversed with a tendency for there to be slightly more females.<br />
<strong>Census</strong> <strong>2011</strong> showed the lowest ever sex ratio for the State with 981 males per 1000 females.<br />
