Chapter 6: Built and Natural Heritage
Church Lane
This is a small lane which is included within the proposed ACA. It was once a key route within the town.
The timber yard which lies at the east side could be improved by defining it through the erection of a stone
boundary wall.
82, 83, 81 Houses which are of local interest on Church Lane.
R368
This road features several large institutional buildings on its east side, one a school located within what
was formerly a detached classical house and one a nursing home within a former convent. The west side is
occupied by the ruins of the wings of the Bishop’s Palace which was a very grand mansion; other
survivors from the demesne include part of an estate house, a roofless gate lodge with good railings and
some fine demesne walls around the GAA playing fields.
75 Buildings of interest on east side of R368. Protected structure on east side of R368.
90 Demesne features which survive from the Bishop’s Palace.
There are various non-habitable structures in the town which also contribute to its character and
attractiveness and should be retained and looked after. In Elphin decorative ironwork is a feature, so too
are stone boundary walls on the outskirts.
