Chapter 6: Built and Natural Heritage 68 An attractive shopfront. 66-71 Another historic terrace which steps down the street and diminishes in scale. 72 This building is significant in its own right but is also very important in views from the east. The area in front of the Cathedral and graveyard is landscaped with a famine cauldron and a water feature. The graveyard however is in dire need of maintenance. The south side of Main Street ends with the landscaped park in front of the Cathedral which boasts very fine iron gates to the graveyard. Main Street ACA – North side Main Street opens in the east on its north side with the former Grammar School and the associated master’s residence. Both are set back off the street behind very fine iron railings and gates. Next to them is the builder’s yard complex featuring an Art Deco façade. Several terraces follow with a variety of twostorey buildings but all with rendered elevations and with many natural slate roofs surviving. Of particular note are the pair of two-and-a-half-bay two-storey buildings which include Cryan’s mosaic tiled shopfront – there is likely to be medieval fabric within these structures. The three-bay building to the east of them is also full of character. Dockery’s shopfront with distinctive styling evokes the desire for modernity prevalent in the mid-twentieth century. The more urban streetscape is terminated by the terrace of threestory buildings - the end one which retains many original features and a beautiful decorative overlight to the front door is considered significant enough to merit protected structure status. 26, 27 28 Protected Structures and Buildings of interest on the north side of Main Street. Castle Street Castle Street leads east out of town; the start of it is included within the proposed ACA as it functions as a visual gateway to the town on this side. It also features a row of local-authority housing of a style with gables and steel windows which was very popular in Co. Roscommon. Sweeping views over the plains below the town can be enjoyed from here. 78, 79, 80, 76 These buildings frame the entrance to the town from the east. Original steel windows.
