Chapter 6: Built and Natural Heritage
Main Street ACA - South side
Main Street opens in the east on its south side with a terrace of tastefully-designed new local-authority
houses which exhibit the best of modern design as they pick up on the rendered elevations and roundheaded
doorcases of local architecture and fit seamlessly within the existing fabric of the town
maintaining the existing street line, eaves heights etc. Five two-storey historic houses follow, three of
which have had their external render removed which is detrimental to the health of an old building as the
render is required to keep such a building weatherproof. The bank is a fine building from 1880 in stone
with red sandstone dressings. Further terraces are enlivened by dripstones over windows which feature
tiny carved heads. The junction with Newline Street is framed by two fine examples of historic buildings
of different ages which retain most of their original features, including an early shopfront. Any renovation
of such a building should aim to retain these features.
48, 49, 50, 51, 52. Buildings of heritage value.
54, 55, 56, 58. Buildings of heritage value. A glimpse of the surrounding
countryside through one of the
lanes off Main Street.
59-65 This entire terrace is of
heritage value - some of the
buildings have decorative
stucco detailing to opes.
64, 65 Very interesting pair of
two-storey with attic houses with
shop units, the left one retains
most of its original features.
66 Fine corner building which
retains sash windows and other
features, all of which can be
repaired.
