Ensure the provision of an adequate, current and future, supply of potable water suitable<br />
for domestic, industrial, agricultural and other uses, which will cater for the sustainable<br />
development of the town.<br />
Ensure high water quality standards are maintained in implementing the relevant<br />
European Community Water Quality Directives and Regulations.<br />
Ensure that the water supply complies with the European Union Drinking Water Directive<br />
98/83/EC.<br />

Prevent the wastage of water and facilitate water conservation projects through leak<br />
detection, replacement and repair of water mains and connections as necessary, and as<br />
resources permit.<br />
Provide water conservation measures with the LAP <strong>area</strong> by requiring the installation of<br />
water meters in all commercial/industrial premises.<br />
Work with other Statutory Agencies in raising public awareness of the value of the water<br />
resources by encouraging conservation of resources and protection of water quality, etc.<br />
Enter into Public Private Partnerships for the provision of necessary infrastructure as<br />
appropriate.<br />
Have regard to and promote the objectives of the Shannon River Basin District<br />
Management Plan, and associated Programme of Measures when completed and any<br />
future reports in relation to water quality for the <strong>County</strong>.<br />
Implement the European Communities (Drinking Water) (No.2) Regulations 2007 and<br />
any future regulations in relation to drinking water supply and quality for the <strong>County</strong>.<br />
Have regard to and promote the objectives, as appropriate, of The Provision and Quality<br />
of Drinking Water in Ireland - A Report for the Years 2007-2008 and any future reports in<br />
relation to water supply and quality for the <strong>County</strong>.<br />
3. Surface Water<br />
St. Patrick’s Church-Main Street (West) - This is the main surface water sewer in Elphin. It consists of a<br />
225mm pipe that flows along Chapel Street in an easterly direction on the southern side of the street<br />
before discharging into an open watercourse, which crosses Chapel Street.<br />
During the Public Consultation phase for the Plan concern was expressed in relation to excess surface<br />
water in the Chapel Street and Blackstick Road <strong>area</strong>s. <strong>Roscommon</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong> is in a position to<br />
carry out the necessary works to address flooding in the Chapel Street <strong>area</strong> and adjoining lands, subject to<br />
approval from the landowner. <strong>Roscommon</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Council</strong> is also currently working towards addressing<br />
the flooding issues in the Blackstick Road <strong>area</strong>; this is subject to the approval of relevant landowners.<br />
