Policy 16 Ensure that new developments accommodate direct pedestrian access into the town centre.<br />

Policy 17 Continue to pursue the development of the preferred route corridor for the realignment of the<br />

N5 following the line of the existing R368 Regional Road from Strokestown to a point just<br />

south of Elphin (junction with L1409) before turning west towards Frenchpark.<br />

Maintain and improve the condition and connectivity of the public footpath network<br />

throughout the Plan <strong>area</strong>, particularly linking newly developed lands with the existing<br />

town centre.<br />

Actively encourage and facilitate the development of a “<strong>local</strong> collector” type road with<br />

access onto Bishop Street and/or Windmill Road.<br />

Explore the provision of a safe and high quality cycle network between residential <strong>area</strong>s<br />

and; retail, recreational and educational facilities.<br />

Maintain and enhance landscaped <strong>area</strong>s and other amenities associated with the public<br />

road network throughout the Plan <strong>area</strong>.<br />

Curtail and discourage unsafe and/or obstructive parking in the town core and particularly<br />

along sections of Chapel Street.<br />

Designate and facilitate the development of amenity walks in the environs of Elphin<br />

Maintain and improve signage on the <strong>local</strong> and regional road network.<br />

Assess the necessity for pedestrian crossing facilities at locations with high pedestrian<br />

crossing movements.<br />

Consult with relevant parties with a view to designating and regularising parking<br />

arrangements for school and public bus services.<br />
