A Message from
OGS President Roger Newman
By the time you get this the release of the 1940 census will be a reality. The big WHO is
who are you going to look for first? Maybe we could have some sharing time at our May
meeting on your success. For me I’m going to look for my parents. They were thousands of
miles apart and didn’t know each other yet. My dad would be in Pearl Harbor as a young
sailor on a submarine and my mother would still be in high school and at home in Shelton.
While I’m on the subject we still need volunteers for indexing the 1940 census for Thurston
County. We have a team leader and a few volunteers but still need more volunteers. Contact
Pat Harper. Many hands make light work! No April meeting, see you at the seminar.
Did your ancestor hear the cry of “Free Land”? The Homestead Act of 1862 was approved
on May 20 th 1862. Homestead National Monument of America is commemorating the 150th
Anniversary of the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homestead Act was one of the most important
events in the westward expansion of the United States. The Act granted 160 acres of free
land to claimants for a filing fee of $18. Only one of my six pioneers who went to Washington
took advantage of the Homestead Act (1862), two others took Agricultural Land Scripts
(1862), one took a Donation Land Claim (1850), another purchased his land under the Cash
Entry Sale Act (1820), and another was a squatter and died before he could take legal rights
to land under any act. There was many ways to get land on your way west.
June…Election time! The nominees are President: Roger Newman; Vice President: Peggy
Cooley; Secretary: Kathy Erlandson; Treasurer: David Bein. Nominations will be taken from
the floor before the election. Thanks to the election committee: David Purtee, Lee James,
Jerri McCoy.
Pat Harper will be retiring from the Olympia Timberland Library and Sara Peté will be taking
her place as the new Library Liaison to Olympia Genealogical Society. We wish Pat to
have a great retirement! And we want to welcome Sara in her new responsibilities.
Everyone have a great summer!

Coming to America: The Walter Cullingford Family
From Left to right top row: Walter (son), Annie, Mary (mother), Florence, Walter (father)
Bottom Row: Two girls, probably Susan (on the left) and Ethel in front of her father.
The baby is thought to be George, great-grandfather of OGS Library Liaison Sara Pete.
Although, depending on when the picture was taken, the small boy in the center may be George.
This is the 1901 Census showing the Cullingford family living at 162 Wayman Street
in Sunderland, Durham, England

Page 37 QUARTERLY April 2012
Walter Cullingford’s declaration of intention to become a citizen of the United States, filed
19 September 1910, is a cornucopia of information about him including physical description, date
and place born, and last place lived, arrival date and ship.

April 2012 QUARTERLY Page 38
Walter Cullingford’s petition for naturalization includes the information about his birth
and arrival in the United States. It also lists all of his family members, their birth dates and places,
and current residence. The petition was filed 16 January 1913 and gives his arrival as 17 May
1905.
The passenger list on the next page supports the family story that Walter and his son, Walter T.,
came to America before the rest of the family.

Page 39 QUARTERLY April 2012
Walter’s wife, Mary E. Cullingford, arrived with the rest of the family on 16 October 1905. The SS
Merion took 12 days to make the crossing from Liverpool. Included with the family is Rebecca, age
22, not listed in the 1901 English census. The Sunderland, Durham, registry office online database
shows that Walter T. married Hannah R. Turner in 1905 before he left for the United States.
On the left side of the passenger list is the person (Walter) the family was meeting and where he lived.
It also show that Rebecca was going to her husband, Walter T. Cullingford, at the same address in
Elizabeth, Pennsylvania.

"The 23rd Psalm for Genealogists"
Genealogy is my Pastime ...
I shall not stray,
It maketh me to lie down
and examine half-buried Tombstones;
It leadeth me into still Courthouses.
It restoreth my Ancestral Knowledge;
It leadeth me into the Paths of Census Records
and Ships Passenger Lists for my Surnames' sake;
Yes, though I wait through the Shadows
of Research Libraries and Microfilm Readers,
I shall fear no Discouragment,
for a Strong Urge is with me.
The curiosity and Motivation,
they Comfort me;
It demandeth preparation of Storage Space
for the Aquisition of Countless Documents;
It anointeth my Head with burning Midnight Oil,
My Family Group Sheets runneth over.
Surely Birth,Marriage and Death dates
shall follow me all the Days of my Life,
And I shall dwell in the House
of a Family History Seeker Forever.
