GIBSON | The Mountain Pine Beetle Suite<br />
a mark. A little foundation and some lipstick,<br />
and you’re good as new, right? Tell the kids<br />
you’ll be out in a sec. It’s time<br />
to get ready for bed. Tuck in<br />
your pocket an extra white tissue, just in case<br />
the bleeding starts. Daddy will be back soon<br />
to tell you a story. Is that what you’ll say—<br />
this time—when you open the bathroom door<br />
and try to smile away the swelling, when you find<br />
a kitchen chair in front of the fridge, and your 4-year-old<br />
daughter holding out a bag of frozen peas?<br />
As of March 2010, the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Mines and Lands estimated that<br />
the mountain pine beetle has killed a cumulative total of 630 million cubic metres of<br />
timber since the current infestation began. The mountain pine beetle in B.C. is as<br />
far-ranging as Fort St. John to the north, the Alberta border to the east, Terrace to<br />
the west, and the United States border to the south.<br />
