CANBERRA,
Thursday.
Moving the second reading ot
the referendum Bill in the House
of Representatives tonight, Mr.
Menzies (Prime Minister! said:
"All I propose to say is that, hav
ing the clear instruction of the
nation to deal with the Commun
ist fifth column swiftly, vigorously,
and unrelentingly, we propose to
perform that task if we are given
the power to perform it."
Mr. Menzies said that the Gov
ernment had no desire to have
the carrying into effect of the
Communist Party Dissolution Act
delayed by further litigation. If
the people approved of a Consti
tutional amendment at the refe
rendum the Act would be resub
mitted to Parliament. It was
essential that validity of the legis
lation should be put immediately
beyond
question.
TEST
Woomera Is Strong
Team
By C. P. Mum
Combined will face
their first of two big
tests tomorrow when they
meet the Woomera Rocket
Range team at Memorial
Oval. The men
frgm "out
back" are coining with a big
reputation,
and if the local
team can defeat them it
will
be
right in line to take
on powerful Whyalla in a
fortnight's
time.
Pirie selectors are- leaving no
thing to chance and have almost
the top 25 men from whom to
choose, with, of course, G. Job
son aud \Y. 'Cochrane absent.
Plenty of weight and speed will
be avaiiable. Presence of P.
Roads in the trainees looks well,
for followers 01 the game have
not yet forgotten the part he
played in vanquishing Whyalla
at Adelaide Oval in that memo
rable match of 1948.
Loss of Jobson, whose legs
feeling the strain of a long
are
football career, is a heavy blow to
the combined game. But lie is
busily engaged coaching the side,
which should take the field 100
per cent fit, according to signs
during training this week.
Mr. J. S. Hocking (association
secretary) lias been in touch
with^the Woomera party by tele
phone, and at time of writing
only scrappy information had
been received about composition
Blues On Top
i.iulomontuwu tightened their
grip 011 the minor premiership
by defeating Proprietary last
Saturday in the best match of
the are 2
season, and pts.
now
ahead of with three of the
rounds played. None can
ilive
take credit away froiji the blues
l'or their final effort, which gave
them a 15-pt. victory after it
looked as if they were up
auainst defeat.
But it was tough luck xor iro
prietary, who 'have found success
this "so near and yet so
far." The redlegs can be heartily
praised for their display, which,
really deserved full reward. A
couple of unguarded men on a
half-forward flank did the dam
age for the blues, for in a game
played at the speed this one was
the vital necessity was to cling
to every opponent when defen
ding.
Little short of a miracle can
now bring Proprietary into the
final fight. Only shadow of a
chance they now have left is to
win all four matches ahead with
substantial margins and rely
Port being defeated in all their
four engagements, also by fair
margins. Not impossible, of
course, but a very slender reed
on which to lean. The
redlegs'
sun actually set when L. Smith
kicked that final goal for Solo
moutown right 011 the bell on
