The design is simple but quite attractive.67 It shows a na'i've
pictorial rendition of a pair of paradise flycatchers (shoudai) with
two young perched on the branches of a blooming plant depicted
with exposed roots. The paradise flycatcher
is a standard symbol of longevity
(shou). The many wan (ten
thousand) or swastika-like motifs
dispersed throughout the composition
amplify the desire for a long life
span. The exuberant blooms portend
youthful energy. Aside from their
symbolic and decorative functions,
the unassuming design elements also
radiate a strong sense of rhythmic
harmony and the joy of life.
