Young Patrons Circle
Young Patrons Circle (YPC) supports the ROM’s overall mission to build community by
nurturing discovery and inspiring wonder. Through unique educational, social and cultural
initiatives, YPC enhances the ROM experience while providing a philanthropic opportunity to
those 45 and younger.
From the Director & CEO of the ROM:
Dear YPC Patrons,
Thank you for your incredible support of Canada’s world museum!
From our beginnings in 1914 the Royal Ontario Museum has grown into a muchloved
part of Toronto, a major co-curricular educator and the largest field
research museum in Canada, with staff active in more than 30 countries. The
last 99 years have been marked by tremendous achievement and the growth of
our incredible ROM supporters, including the founding of the Young Patrons
Circle in 2005.
The ROM was the first cultural institution in Canada to launch a young patron
program. YPC was the pioneer, and has been a model for similar groups across
the country. YPC laid the foundation for success and continues to raise the bar
with each passing year, thanks to a committed group of individuals and
spectacular fundraising events like PROM.
This summer, YPC will add to its legacy by becoming the first Patron group to
support a blockbuster exhibition at the ROM. Since its inception, YPC donors
have collectively given $1.4 million to the ROM. Now, as an Exhibit Patron of
Mesopotamia, we can share YPC’s exceptional support of the Museum with
Canadians and our visitors from around the world.
I hope you will join me at the Patrons Preview of Mesopotamia on June 19, 2013
to help celebrate YPC’s support of this exciting new exhibition.
Thank you again for helping to make the ROM an essential destination for
inspiration, learning, and understanding, and for showing how to combine
philanthropy with enjoyment to make compelling programming. I look forward
to your continued support as members of the Museum family for many years to
come.
Spotlight on Georgia Guenther
ROM Artist Georgia Guenther has made objects
YPC enews May 2013
to support hundreds of ROM projects. For
Ancient PROM she made her own reed stylus to
imprint Sumerian words including “bread” and
“beer” into a piece of self-hardening clay, which
resembled an ancient writing tablet.
ROM curatorial staff show off a reproduction of a tablet to
promote Mesopotamia at PROM.
The Museum’s galleries and exhibitions often
include models to help tell stories from world
cultures and the natural world, such as the
longhouse model in the Daphne Cockwell Gallery
of Canada: First People or the multitude of life
forms in the Life in Crisis: Schad Gallery of
Biodiversity.
Georgia once thought of her job as making
things more visible to ROM audiences. But the
Museum is a leader in providing tactile
experiences for all visitors including those with
sight impairments, so much of her work involves
making objects that can be displayed in the open
and touched by thousands of hands. Recent
additions to the Gallery of Korea include five
tactile reproductions of artifacts, and the
upcoming Mesopotamia exhibition will offer
visitors eight opportunities to interact through
the sense of touch.
