DIGITAL PIANO CATALOGUE • 2011 EDITION
Editorial
There are things that are inextricably linked to a
brand name or a type name.
all these things helped give the (digital) piano its
present shape: a symbol of music par excellence.
But not so the topic of this catalogue - the piano. The
rich history of the piano spans three centuries, letting
loose just as many models as types made by just as
many manufacturers on the musical world. Some of
these models and brands grew to become legendary
instruments; others disappeared ingloriously or are
now no more than mere humorous footnotes in the
history of the piano.
But we actually appreciate this variety nonetheless.
It is only thanks to the inventiveness of the
manufacturers that we are able to make music
on an instrument of such quality. Starting from
the revolutionary piano hammer mechanism
developed by Cristofori to improvements such as
the steel frame, escapement action and - later, in
the digital era - the continuous improvements of
sample possibilities and virtual emulation software...
Equally universal as it is versatile; equally indispensible
as it is applicable. The piano is for the musician what
the compass is for the sailor: the link between here
and there.
Even if the piano cannot be so easily kept in a shirt
pocket like a compass...
The piano
In the beginning of the eighteenth century, the
harpsichord was undisputedly the most popular
instrument. However, the mechanism of the
harpsichord (in contrast to the piano, the strings of a
harpsichord are plucked with a plectrum) results in
the rather limited sound level of the instrument: it is
impossible to play both loudly and softly.
For more than three decades, Roland has been
at the forefront of digital piano research and
development. This continual determination to
maintain a spirit of innovation has led to quite a
number of legendary milestones including the EP-30,
the RD-1000, the acclaimed HP Series and of course
the revolutionary V Piano.
In 1695, Bartolomeo Cristofori had a luminous idea:
he designed a piano hammer mechanism with
which the strings could be struck. This invention
made it possible to play the instrument dynamically:
the strength with which the string is struck is translated
into a soft (piano) or a hard (forte) resonance of the
string.
We are proud to be able to present you with our
new and enhanced piano series at the beginning
of this new decade. The V Piano with its unique
technology, the brand-new HP series and the
classical grand pianos of our RG series: all these
instruments were created by people with a passion
for music... for people with a passion for music.
Although the instrument was not met with
overwhelming enthusiasm, it had its definite breakthrough
after 1750 (after the Baroque period and at
the beginning of the classical era).
In the course of time, the piano was developed
further, adapted and enhanced. By the end of
the 19th century, the piano as we now know it had
become the most popular instrument of its day.
The emergence of blues, jazz and pop music in
the 20th century also facilitated the break-through
of electric and electronic instruments. In particular
with the rise of the digital era, the electronic piano
underwent a remarkable evolution.
"The piano is
the most popular
instrument
per se”
Virtual pianos.
oland's product range includes
different types of pianos. We don't
mean the type of instrument (such
as grand piano, home piano and
stage piano), but rather what is
underneath the cover...
Our V Piano and V Piano Grand are instruments
that make use of the V Piano technology. This
technology is based on the virtual emulation of all
aspects of a piano's sound. This is why it is possible
to control and adjust the sound of the piano down
to the most minute of details.
To a large extent, our SuperNATURAL Piano technology
makes use of the V Piano technology. The most
significant difference between the two technologies
is that the V Piano technology creates sounds
completely virtually, whereas the SuperNATURAL
Piano technology is based on samples.
Roland guarantees high-quality samples - top-class
basic material, so to speak. Our SuperNATURAL
Piano technology, in turn, guarantees that we get
the best out of this material, making use of these
high-quality samples.
of course also equipped with immaculate basis
material (high-quality samples) and provide an
excellent piano experience. Concerning the
processing and modification of the piano sounds,
these pianos are less sophisticated than the ones
equipped with our SuperNATURAL Piano or V Piano
technology. Therefore, we believe that our pianos
equipped with the sample technology are ideal
pianos for those beginning to learn the piano.
We have listed all our models in this catalogue.
Please take your time to read through all this information
in order to be able to make a well-founded
choice. Should you still have questions after having
read this information in its entirety, please don’t
hesitate to contact one of our product specialists
on 01792 702701.
But don't forget to consider rule number one when
purchasing an instrument: play it! Please visit a
dealer in your area (you will find a dealer locator
at www.roland.co.uk), take a seat behind one of
our pianos and... play! We are quite sure that our
pianos will seduce and persuade you right away!
A number of models still make use of the "standard
sample technology". However, these models are
V Piano technology
The V Piano technology was first introduced in 2009
with the launch of the first V Piano. And right from the
beginning, this unique concept was appreciated by
pianists the world over. The V Piano is (still) unique
amongst its contemporaries: the sound is created
without the use of one single sample. No other technology
can rival this performance - and no other
technology is consequently able to achieve such
detail when adjusting and creating its own sounds.
V PIANO VS. SAMPLE TECHNOLOGY
A digital piano that makes use of the standard sample
technology, is actually based on a very simple
mechanism: samples of an acoustic piano are recorded
in a studio; these samples are saved in the
memory of a digital piano and are assigned to a
key. If you strike the key of a digital piano, the corresponding
sample is "played" and you hear the
sound. This is - quite simply - how a sample piano
actually works.
The V Piano, however, does not use samples. If you
strike the key of the V Piano, no previously recorded
sound is played. But how is the sound actually created?
In the case of the V Piano, the piano sound is stripped
to the bone. Or should we say: “to the string”? The
sound of an acoustic piano is indeed more than a
hammer that makes the string resonate - the sound
of an acoustic piano is the sum of a number of
parts or aspects, which together give each piano its
unique acoustic colour.
It took Roland more than ten years of research and
development to strip the sound of an acoustic piano
to the very basics and to map it out. All these facets
of the piano sound are digitalised - or better: mathematised.
These uncountable mathematic formulas
form the basis of the V Piano; formulas that create a
sound wave. It is because we are no longer dependent
on a source, which was recorded previously (i.e.
a sample), that we can go much further in terms of
sound. The V Piano, which does not depend on previously
recorded source material, is able to produce
a more nuanced and richer sound than any other
digital piano.
MAKE INDEFINITE SOUNDS
Due to the technology incorporated within the V Piano,
it is not only possible to simulate an acoustic
piano down to the most minute of details... we can
even go further than that what is even conceivable
on an acoustic instrument. We can play with the
components of the piano by virtually exchanging
the wooden soundboard with a metal soundboard.
We can make the soundbox of the piano out of
glass; we can change the material of the strings; we
can even adjust the number of strings per key. This
means that the V Piano not only enables us to follow
all avenues known already for the piano, but we are
also able to discover new horizons and go beyond
the boundaries of the acoustic piano.
EVOLUTION
Yet another invaluable advantage of the V Piano
technology: expandability! The incredibly strong
technology at the core of this type of instrument
enables us to continuously develop the technology
further and to expand its features.
In 2010, for instance, the V Piano's standard sound
range was expanded to include new models and
new possibilities. This upgrade, termed Evolution by
us, is available for each V Piano and can be downloaded
for free from our website. With the V Piano
you purchase an instrument for life: an instrument
that is just as up-to-date now as it will remain for the
years to come.
The piano redefined
The acoustic piano is and remains an impressive example
of musical and optical rationality. Although the instrument
has developed over the centuries to meet the
needs of composers and musicians, the basic principle
has remained unchanged. Roland’s V Piano redefines
the ‘classical piano’. Owing to the large range of functions,
you may tune the V‐Piano according to your own
requirements and play it as expressively as an acoustic instrument.
But that's only the the beginning. With the "living"
sound engine inside, the V‐Piano soars above the limits
of all physical and technological solutions of all existing
acoustic and digital instruments. This is a musical instrument
- with emphasis on "musical" - with a great number
of expressive possibilities.
starting from when the hammer hits the strings. The timbre
evolves quite naturally and depends on the force
with which you press the keys. Whereas this is realised
in clearly audible steps on a digital piano, the V Piano
masters it seamlessly.
The notes of the V‐Piano fade out naturally, too. The
fact that no samples are used prevents a sterile end
of the sound made by the note. The V‐Piano is the first
electronic instrument that replicates an acoustic piano
down to even the most minute of details.
ADVANCED SOUND CREATION
BASED ON ACOUSTIC PIANO COM-
PONENTS
An acoustic piano produces a sound when a key is pressed.
This causes a small hammer to hit the allocated metal strings.
The resulting sound causes other strings to resonate as well.
The frame, the soundboard and the cabinet amplify these
vibrations. This process was fundamental in the development
of the V‐Piano. The complex interaction of components
was recreated meticulously, resulting in a rich, realistic
and organic grand piano sound.
ONLY THE V‐PIANO OFFERS THE
EXPRESSIVE CAPABILITIES
OF AN ACOUSTIC GRAND PIANO
NEW PHA III KEYBOARD WITH
“IVORY FEEL” AND PRESSURE POINT
(‘ESCAPEMENT’)
The V‐Piano is equipped with a new keyboard, with
which the numerous nuances of the soundboard can
be fully used. The PHA III ‘‘Ivory Feel’’ keyboard with escapement
performs even better than its predecessor
and responds much more dynamically to your touch.
Moreover, the keyboard of the V‐Piano replicates the
escapement mechanism, i.e. the slight resistance of the
keys when pressed down. This particularly improves expression
when playing pianissimo parts.
The name ‘‘Ivory Feel’’ refers to the material used,
which absorbs the moisture, so that your fingers won’t
slide off - not even in the hottest of locations.
All you need to do is press just one key of the V‐Piano
to realise that this instrument indeed ‘lives’. This is due
to the fact that the V‐Piano replicates every detail of
an acoustic grand piano's sound-creation process,
Vintage
FOR THE DEMANDING
CONCERT PIANIST. ALMOST PERFECT
CLASSICAL PERFORMANCE.
V‐Piano's "Vintage" model is based on a meticulous analysis
of the great acoustic concert pianos of the past. Roland's
master sound designers did a great job: the realism
and the sound quality are stunning. The fine-tuning
of the strings, the hardness of the hammers, the complex
resonance and many other parameters can be adjusted.
With the V‐Piano, you can even create instruments that
have that little something which some pianists might miss
in modern grand pianos.
THE MOST IMPORTANT VOICING PARAMETERS:
This efficient approach enables you to draw on the
perfect piano for each piece, even when playing
live music. Finally, one single instrument sounds like
all existing and all those yet to be invented pianos
in one!
Copper-wrapped strings, Editor: the pitch can be set Silver-wrapped strings,
THE V‐PIANO MAKES SHORT WORK OF
THE LIMITATIONS OF
PAST TECHNOLOGIES
"BUILD" YOUR OWN PIANOS THAT
PERFECTLY MIRROR THE ATMOSPHERE
OF YOUR MUSIC AND REPERTOIRE
The parameters of the V‐Piano are crystal clear, i.e.
you can even tailor the complex interaction between
the strings, the frame, the soundboard and
the cabinet to your personal needs.
V‐Piano's "Vanguard" model provides you with the
perfect "equipment" for creative piano sounds. This
gives you the freedom to decide to use a piano with
three strings for every key, even in the low register, or
to use strings wrapped in copper or made of steel.
Sounds that seemed to be impossible, are not a problem at
all anymore and what's more, they sound very natural. And
if you want to accentuate your musical statement even further,
you can make use of three (virtual) strings in the low
register.
The V‐Piano contains separate parameters for each register,
enabling you to easily build up your "ideal" piano -
without having to worry about the physical limitations of
an acoustic instrument. At your choice, V‐Piano's ‘‘Vanguard’’
comes with silver-wrapped strings and therefore
has a fresh and even "bold" sound. Since silver strings are
a little softer and heavier than copper strings, the ‘‘Vanguard’’
model provides extra-hard (virtual) hammers to
compensate. The V‐Piano is able to make your dream
of the perfect piano come true. Choose your sustain
and optimal brilliance. If necessary, you can change the
acoustic colour during playing with a pedal by assigning
cross resonance or the hardness of the strings to it. And of
course you can also tune the piano yourself.
MORE INFORMATION
AN INSTRUMENT OF
FLESH AND BLOOD
The V Piano Grand soars above the limitations of past
technologies with its revolutionary "living" piano engine.
Each note played sounds "real" from beginning
to end. With the V Piano Grand, there is no velocity
switching or looping, resulting in smooth, natural notes
that must be heard to be believed. Organic, natural,
beautiful - the V Piano Grand is a dream to play.
SPACE FOR THE SOUND
Unlike any instrument before it, the V Piano Grand's
built-in sound system employs intelligent multi-channel
audio technology that fills the room with amazing
spatial sound in which the player and audience
actually forget that the sound is really being produced
by speakers. Each and every component
of the piano sound is allocated to the appropriate
location immediately, changing fluidly and naturally
based on the performance.
This results in a natural 3D sound pattern, so to speak.
From the player's perspective, hammer clicks sound
closer, for example, and ringing strings are at a distance.
Each element is allocated intelligently in real
time and space to create a perfect acoustic illusion.
And even from a distance (i.e. in the audience) you
really have the impression that this just cannot be a
digital instrument...
Furthermore, sound spaces are uniquely created for
each piano model. This amazing feature is unique to
the V Piano Grand.
SOUND DESIGNERS
The V Piano Grand contains "Vintage" piano models
that come very close to an acoustic, high-class
grand piano with regard to maturity and richness. In
addition, there are futuristic "Vanguard" models and
the possibility to create your own sounds. Vary the
hardness of the hammer felts and experiment with
exotic string configurations, tunings and materials,
such as all-silver triple strings for each key. Play on a
dream grand piano or "build" your own dream instrument
- everything is possible.
INNOVATIVE CABINET
In a Roland first, the V Piano Grand lets you enjoy
the aesthetic beauty of the mirror-finished fallboard
while also concealing the control panel. In addition,
the fallboard can function as a sliding lid. In the past,
Roland pianos had either a fallboard or sliding-type
lid, but the V Piano combines both these principles
to ensure a "classical" impression: only when the lid is
fully opened, the control panel is visible. To conceal
the control panel, the opened lid just needs to be slid
a little further. Naturally, the music rest can be folded
down. If you close the lid as well, the top of the V
Piano Grand is completely flat.
no velocity switching, resulting in smooth, natural
notes that must be heard to be believed.
COMPILE YOUR DREAM COLLECTION
The V Piano contains numerous presets of the world's
best grand pianos, but you can just as well model
all sound aspects to your individual needs. Vary the
instrument - everything is possible.
NEW PHA-III “IVORY FEEL” KEYBOARD
The PHA-III keyboard of the V‐Piano contains an escapement
simulation and the “Ivory Feel” function. Thanks
to a revolutionary technology, this keyboard feels like
the (white) ivory and (black) ebony keys of an acoustic
instrument - with the same refined responses. Even the
slight clicking feel when releasing the (virtual) hammers
of the keys is simulated.
INTUITIVE BUT STILL COMPLEX
Despite the many technological innovations, the V‐Piano
contains a logically structured control panel and
a user interface that promptly guides you to the required
sound. Even the most minute of details can be
changed without any great technological capabilities
being necessary, i.e. within a few minutes, you will hear
precisely the sound that you always wanted to use.
Supernatural pianos.
Our SuperNATURAL Piano technology is a sophisticated
combination of the established sample technology
and the innovative V Piano technology. The core of the
sound production are high-quality samples. But with
the SuperNATURAL Piano technology, we go beyond
the "traditional" sample technology. Way beyond...
THREE PILLARS
The SuperNATURAL Piano is based on three
elementary pillars: seamless tone variations, smooth
and natural tone decay and expressivity in every
single key
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN PRACTICALLY?
SEAMLESS TONE VARIATIONS DEPEND-
ING ON TOUCH
Conventional piano sound engines (usually) incorporate
several different tones per key, but the switch between
these different tones depending on touch can
usually be heard. However, acoustic pianos do not
have this characteristic: their acoustic colour varies
continuously (i.e. seamlessly). Our new SuperNATURAL
Piano sound engine eliminates this unnatural phenomenon.
Through our V Piano technology, we have been
able to achieve natural and seamless variations in tone,
making the difference between virtual and acoustic instruments
yet a little bit smaller.
SMOOTH AND NATURAL
TONE DECAY
After you strike a key, not only its volume but its tone
changes as it decays. Most digital piano sound engines
are actually able to reduce the volume of the
struck key, but the tone usually remains static. The SuperNATURAL
Piano sound engine changes all this. With
its use of the V Piano technology, the tones decay just
as they would on an acoustic piano - they not only become
quieter, but also increasingly subdued.
EXPRESSIVITY IN EVERY SINGLE KEY
The strings of an acoustic grand piano have different
lengths and thicknesses. The number of strings
and the size of the hammers differ, too. In addition,
the resonance of the soundboard, the cabinet and
the other strings always depend on the pitch of the
played notes. Therefore, each note sounds slightly
differently. Our instruments of the HP series were one
of the first digital pianos to feature 88-key stereo multi-sampling.
Roland first sampled all 88 keys from a
variety of world-class grand pianos.
We then analysed and synthesised these tones
using Roland's state-of-the-art digital technology
to develop a high-quality, very expressive piano
sound.
RG-3F-PE
A breakthrough instrument with the soul of a classic
T
o an observer, it’s an object of
beauty for the eyes and ears. For
an artist it's like coming home. Anyway,
the intention during the development
of the RG-3F was clear: Roland wanted to
build a mini grand piano in a classical look, which
thanks to the SuperNATURAL technology also
sounded as versatile as an acoustic instrument.
THIS INSTRUMENT IS JUST SUBLIME.
The PHA III "Ivory Feel" keyboard with escapement
provides an authentic feeling and response,
while the four speakers were chosen and placed
with a persuasive sound quality in mind. Perfect
for homes, hotels, restaurants and environments that
can benefit from a great-sounding, great-looking
piano, the RG-3F is compact in its dimensions and
attractively priced.
LX-10F TRADITIONAL PIANO FUNCTIONS
Design and quality
JUST BEAUTIFUL...
The LX‐10F’s polished ebony and satin black finish emanates
superiority. The look is strong and bold, yet the
depth of the piano is only 45.3 cm. The fallboard’s interior
has a mirror finish that reflects the keyboard and
moving fingers in the style of a grand piano. The fallboard
can also be used as a music rest when opened.
Due to a special mechanism, it closes smoothly and
gently, combining both safety and aesthetic grace.
In addition to its beautiful appearance, the movable
top lid also shapes the piano’s overall tonal character.
This enables you to change between soft and clear
sounds. All cables of the LX‐10F are discretely hidden
away and invisible when placed against a wall. But
even its back is perfectly finished, i.e. it is also possible
to place this instrument in the middle of the room.
NATURAL SOUND DESPITE
SPEAKERS
The LX‐10F is equipped with a high-quality, internal
speaker system. By taking advantage of the piano’s vertical
cabinet chamber with six speakers in optimal positions,
the LX‐10F is able to produce sounds that fill the
room with a rich, resonant tone.
PEDALS THAT REACT ACCURATELY TO
YOUR TECHNIQUE AND EMOTIONS
The LX‐10F's damper and soft pedals react even to the
slightest of touch. Moreover, their response is absolutely
natural and authentic. This enables you to precisely
control how much the dampers should damp
the resonance of the strings. If you release the pedal
just a little bit and press it down again, the (simulated)
string remains resonating, while the resonance of the
damper also remains intact.
THE RICHNESS OF A CONCERT GRAND
All sounds of the LX‐10F are based on samples of the
world's best acoustic grand pianos. Some sounds even
use several separate stereo samples for each of the 88
keys. Roland spared neither trouble nor expense to collect
these beautiful sounds and accompanying resonances.
If you wish, you even have the resonances of a
duplex scale at your disposal for a clearer high register.
Either way, the sound will always be impressive. Yet, if you
still have other preferences, the "Piano Designer" feature
enables you to change resonance, hammer sound and
other important details. With its 128-voice polyphony, the
sound engine of the LX‐10F is actually spacious enough
to prevent notes from falling off when the pedals are frequently
used.
RESPONSE OF A CLASSICAL GRAND
PIANO
The LX‐10F is equipped with our “Ivory Feel” PHA II keyboard
(“Progressive Hammer Action II”). It has the advantage
that the white keys feel like ivory, whereas the black
keys seem to be really made of ebony. The moistureabsorbing
characteristics of the keys' surface give your
fingers a good grip and prevent them from slipping off.
And the white keys have the same dual construction as
a grand piano's keys (i.e. a basic layer and a finish layer).
Not only does this contribute to a beautiful appearance,
but it also meets the requirements of experienced pianists.
The natural response is due to the counterweight of
the hammers – no springs are used in the mechanism.
Moreover, the keyboard of the LX‐10F simulates the escapement
mechanism, i.e. the light resistance of the keys
when pressed down.
LX-10F
Classic cabinetry with SuperNATURAL piano technology
At first glance, the LX-10F looks exactly like other
traditional square pianos, but owing to the sophisticated
SuperNATURAL sound engine, the disadvantages
of such traditional instruments have been
eliminated. It is unique in its price range, since its rich
and three-dimensional tone sounds confoundedly
acoustic.
Owing to the superior PHA III “Ivory Feel” keyboard,
the LX-10F's action and response are surprisingly
authentic, too - and the high-quality amplifier
system ensures that you actually can hear
all these nuances.
• Advanced SuperNATURAL Piano engine provides a
new level of authenticity and sophistication • "Piano
Designer" feature allows customisation of sounds
(resonance, hammer noise, etc.) • PHA III “Ivory
styled pedals with "Progressive Damper Action" and
half-pedal recognition • Stylish, space-saving
cabinet with beautifully polished ebony and satin
black hybrid finish • 6-speaker system provides
natural, rich sound • Top lid can be opened/closed
LX-10F LEARNING AND PLAYING WITH MUSICAL
PLEASURE
Learn and play
USEFUL
EDUCATIVE FUNCTIONS
The LX‐10F contains several useful functions for
studying and learning, such as a metronome to
keep the rhythm and a three-track recorder for
the critical and objective analysis of your interpretations.
The “Twin Piano” feature divides the
piano into two separate instruments, enabling
two pianists to play side by side in the same register.
Anyone will progress with this variety of educative
functions!
PLAY YOUR
FAVOURITE MUSIC
The LX‐10F contains a long list of classical compositions
and jazz pieces. Additionally, the LX‐10 can play songs*
on data carriers**, such as audio CDs*** as well as standard
MIDI files and audio files on USB memory sticks. You
can not only change the tempo and the tone of the
LX‐10F's internal and external music pieces, but you can
also switch off the left-hand or right-hand part to play it
yourself, while the instrument plays the other part.
It is even possible to change the tempo and tone of
pieces from an audio CD or WAV files, enabling you to
be accompanied by your favourite music. The available
repertoire is only limited by your CD or standard MIDI file
collection.
* Compatible formats: Standard MIDI files and WAV
files ** USB data carriers, CD-ROM and disks; playing
of data on a CD-ROM requires an optional USB CD
drive (CD-01A); disks can only be played with an optional
USB disk drive (FD-01A). *** Playing of the data
requires an optional USB CD drive (CD-01A).
NEVER TUNE AGAIN!
JUST ONE OF THE NUMEROUS
ADVANTAGES OF THE LX‐10F
Since the LX‐10F is a digital instrument, it does not contain
strings and therefore there's no need to tune it. Not even
the greatest variations in temperature and air humidity
will have any influence on the tuning of the instrument.
In addition, the LX‐10F is equipped with a volume control
button and a headphone jack, meaning that you don't
have to disturb anyone. Compared to an acoustic piano,
the LX‐10F is light-weight and can be placed anywhere
quite easily. This explains why Roland's pianos are
so popular: they produce a fantastic sound - anytime
and anywhere.
HP SERIES
"An unrivalled realism in sound, action and playing sense"
OUR HP SERIES HAS BEEN GAINING
ITSELF A REPUTATION IN THE PIANO
WORLD FOR QUITE A WHILE NOW.
In the beginning of the 1990s, Roland was the first
instrument manufacturer to acquaint the world with
the first completely digital grand piano, the HP-
7700. Our commitment to improve and embellish
our instruments has now resulted in the brand-new
HP series: the HP302, the HP305 and its flagship, the
HP307. And the highlight of the new range is our
SuperNATURAL Piano technology. This technology
is based on the powerful V Piano engine, offering
unrivalled realism in sound, action and playing
sense. The HP307 enables you to adjust practically
any aspect of your sound. This gives you access to
an enormous variety of acoustic colours. And the
PHA III keyboard with double escapement and
"Ivory Feel" ensures that all nuances are translated
into musical expression.
MIRROR- FINISHED BL ACK
HP307 - HP305
Owing to a slight "mirror effect", the satin black
finish of the HP307 and HP305 will captivate many
a pianist. This is the design of choice for pianists,
who appreciate a modern but at the same time
elegant appearance.
ST YLI SH AND YE T COMPACT DESIGN
FOR E VERY INTERIOR
All models of the new HP series are equipped with
a fallboard with a "classical position", i.e. a position
in which the keyboard is easily accessible, while
the control panel is invisible. This position has the
advantage that the audience is not distracted, giv-
HP307PE
ing the instrument an "acoustic" look. The fallboard's
edges are now also elaborated with veneer finish,
ensuring an even more authentic appearance of
the instrument.
L ARGE MUSIC REST WITH
MUSIC SCORE HOLDER FOR
SMOOTH PL AYING ON SIGHT
HP307 - HP305
The HP307 and HP305 come with stylish copper
music score holders to prevent your music scores
from falling shut during playing. In addition, the
HP307 and HP305 have an extra large music rest,
enabling you to use large music books as well.
Of course, the music rest can be folded down to
never block your view needlessly.
Sublime technology
THE NEW TWIN PIANO MODE
OFFERS TWO PIANISTS THE POSSIBILITY
TO PLAY SIDE BY SIDE
Our popular Twin Piano mode comes in a yet more sophisticated
design. Using the 2 headphones, two pianists
can practice on the left side and the right side
of the keyboard without hearing or disturbing each
other (individual mode). This feature comes in handy
when the offspring must practice "briefly" right before
going to bed and you only have one HP piano.
USB PORT FOR EXTERNAL
DATA CARRIER OR CD PLAYER
All pianos of the HP series are equipped with a
USB port, enabling you to save your own record-
ings and play WAV files and SMF data. If you wish,
you can even connect a USB compatible CD
drive and play your favourite CD.
WITH THE 3-TRACK RECORDER,
YOU CAN RECORD
AND PLAY THE
LEFT-HAND AND RIGHT-HAND PART
This function enables you to record, save and
play up to 3 tracks of your own performances
and compositions. If you use the built-in pieces
to study new repertoire, you can start with one
hand and work on the other hand later on. This
procedure can be applied to the recording feature,
too, if you are afraid that you won't be able
to play both hands correctly.
Your recordings can be saved to a USB data carrier,
making them available for educative purposes.

Superior touch
THE PHA (PROGRESSIVE HAMMER AC-
TION) III KEYBOARD IS
EVEN MORE EXPRESSIVE AND MASTERS
FAST-REPEATING NOTES AS WELL
The PHA II keyboard of the HP305 and HP302 already
offers a superior response. The "touch" of this
unique Roland piano is almost identical with an
acoustic piano's action.
THE ESCAPEMENT MECHANISM TURNS
THE RESISTANCE INTO THE NATURAL
FEEL OF A GRAND PIANO KEYBOARD
Press a key slightly to feel the resistance, which disappears
again after a short while. This unique "click
feeling" is called "escapement" in technical terms
and is a typical characteristic of a grand piano's
keyboard. The pianos of the HP series are most certainly
suitable for any customer looking for authentic
action and response.
The action does not make use of springs but moving
hammers that can also be found in acoustic instruments.
Therefore, it is possible to distinguish exactly between
pianissimo and fortissimo and it feels like playing
on a "real" piano, since the keys in the low register are
just a little heavier than the ones in the high register.
The HP307 is equipped with a PHA III keyboard, going
beyond the PHA II keyboard with regard to expressivity
and repeating performance.
Furthermore, slight differences in nuances are
detected more easily and forwarded to the
sound engine. This piano will convince even the
most demanding of pianists.
THE "IVORY FEEL" KEYBOARD:
THE MORE YOU PLAY IT,
THE MORE FAMILIAR IT WILL BECOME
Both the HP307 and the HP305 are equipped with
an "Ivory Feel" keyboard. This type of keyboard is
very much appreciated among pianists. Owing to
the special, moisture-absorbing material, the keys
not only look like, but also have the texture and simulate
the playing feeling of ivory and ebony keys of
exclusive grand pianos. The white keys are made up
of two parts, i.e. a basic layer and a finish layer, replicating
the keys of an acoustic piano. This structure
subdues the clicking sound of your finger nails on
the keys and provides an attractive look.
Perfectly playable
A CONSIDERATE KEYBOARD OFFERS
THE PIANIST AN EVEN RESPONSE -
BOTH AT THE FRONT AND THE BACK
OF THE KEYS.
When playing pieces that require extensive use of
the black keys, your fingers will automatically choose
a position near the back of the key instead of the
front. The resistance of the white keys of an acoustic
grand piano is almost the same at both points, since
the tipping point of the keys is further back.
If, however, the concealed part of the key is quite
short, you must resolutely press down the back
of the key due to the leverage effect. Since we
strive to provide a response that feels as natural
as possible, all Roland pianos presented in this
catalogue have a longer invisible end to push the
tipping point further back. This results in a much
more natural and most of all more evenly distributed
touch, enabling you to press the keys wherever
you want to.
THE FUNDAMENTAL
PRINCIPLES OF AN
ACOUSTIC PIANO: NOT THE KEY
BUT THE HAMMER
MAKES THE SOUND.
Acoustic pianos have a hammer that strikes the
respective string after the key has been pressed.
Roland follows this principle in its creation of
sounds: keyboard > hammer > sound. Owing to
this approach, the hammers have a strong inertia
even when playing fast and "superficial" passages
- resulting in turn in a powerful sound.
During the development of its pianos, Roland always
keeps in mind that the sound is not created by
the movement of the keys, but rather by the passion
of the pianist and his finger movements.
Excellent sound .
THE POLYPHONY IS SPACIOUS
ENOUGH FOR EVEN THE MOST
COMPLEX PIECES AND INTENSIVE
USE OF THE PEDALS
The 128-voice polyphony comes in handy when
playing fast pieces, requiring the use of the
damper pedal, but also for the playback of SMF
files. The HP pianos master every task without any
notes dropping off.
YOU CAN TAILOR THE SOUND
TO YOUR NEEDS
WITH THE "PIANO DESIGNER"
You can tune the resonance simulation of resonating
strings and decide how far the grand piano's lid
should be opened, coaxing your favourite timbres
from the instrument. The HP307 even enables you
to adjust the cabinet's resonance or to "remove"
the virtual lid completely.
‘GRAND PIANO PRESENCE II’
FOR THIS UNIQUE
ACOUSTIC GRAND PIANO SOUND
The 4 speakers (2 x full-range and 2 x for high frequencies)
are arranged for an optimal replication
of the “presence” of a grand piano. This means
that the higher notes seem to "float" above the pianist,
whereas the bass notes seem to come from
beneath.
This sound impression perfectly replicates the
sound presence of an acoustic grand piano.
SEAMLESS PEDAL ACTION FOR
A PERFECT METERING
All three HP models are equipped with three
pedals: damper, soft and sostenuto. The damper
and the soft pedal can be seamlessly played - the
sound thus always depends on the pedal's position.
This is important if you want to play the pedals
expressively. Pressing in the damper pedal lightly
results in subtle differences in acoustic colour,
Roland not only manufactures user-friendly
instruments but cares FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, TOO.
The plastic components of the PHA III and PHA II keyboard
(Progressive Hammer Action III & II) can be recycled for instance
and the pianos do not contain any lead. The pianos, therefore,
are indeed environmentally friendly. Our printed circuit boards
do not contain any lead and the manufacturing process of our
instruments is based on environmental considerations.
REFORESTATION PROJECT IN INDONESIA
The wood for the cabinets of Roland's pianos is imported from
Indonesia. In 2008, Roland designated a 100-hectare area for
tree planting. Since then, more and more trees have been
planted. The area contains a mixture of protected forest and
trees designated for digital-piano-cabinet production. This
reforestation project is expected to offset approximately 10,000
tons of CO2 over a period of 20 years.
