The University of Craiova<br />

Prestigious Romanian Institution of High Education<br />

The University of Craiova was included among the Romanian universities at the<br />

middle of the twentieth century, being the fifth university in the country.<br />

The University of Iasi – founded in 1860 housing three faculties: Law,<br />

Philosophy and Theology;<br />

The University of Bucharest – founded in 1864. It initially housed the<br />

faculties of Law, Letters and Sciences;<br />

The University of Cluj – 1959;<br />

The University of Timisoara – 1962 – housing the faculties of<br />

Mathematics, Physics and Philology<br />

The University of Craiova – 1966 – with seven faculties (Mathematics,<br />

Philology, Electrotechnics, Agriculture, Chemistry and Economics.<br />

The next university was that of Brasov, founded in 1971.<br />

During the academic year 2001 – 2002 the Romanian cities recorded with a<br />

large number of institutions of high education were the following (taken in<br />

decreasing order):<br />

1. Bucharest – 44 5. Constanţa– 6<br />

2. Iasi – 12 6. Craiova – 4<br />

3. Cluj-Napoca – 10 7. Braşov – 4<br />

4. Timişoara – 8 8. Sibiu– 4<br />

The attempts to found an academic institution in the center of Oltenia were<br />

successful due to the Law no.138/25.04.1947 in favor of the foundation and<br />

organization of the University of Craiova and its auxiliary branches.<br />

Regarding the number of faculties, these are mainly to be found in the following<br />

cities:<br />

1. Bucharest – 193 7. Oradea – 23 13. Târgovişte – 11;<br />

2. Iaşi – 64 8. Braşov – 22 14. Piteşti – 11;<br />

3. Cluj-Napoca – 58 9. Sibiu – 19 15. Tg. Jiu – 10;<br />

4. Timişoara – 53 10. Galaţi – 14 16. Alba Iulia – 10;<br />

5. Craiova – 28 11. Tg. Mureş – 14 17. Bacău - 10.<br />

6. Constanţa – 28 12. Arad – 14<br />

The most important moments in the history of the University of Craiova are<br />

related to:<br />

the stage previous to its official foundation (1848 – 1945)<br />

the period of emergence and functioning of the first academic institutions (1947 – 1965)<br />

the foundation and evolution of the University of Craiova (1966 – 1989)<br />

development, extension and improvement of the University of Craiova (1990 – 2002)<br />
