Vidyut “ is the literal meaning of electricity but it
encompasses all the energy that exists in this world. Electricity is a
general term encompassing a variety of phenomena resulting from the
presence and flow of electric charge. Electricity is an extremely flexible
form of energy, and has been adapted to a huge, and growing, number
of uses. In general usage, the word "electricity" adequately refers to a
number of physical effects. In scientific usage, however, the term is
vague.
The rapid expansion in electrical technology at this time
transformed industry and society. Electricity's extraordinary versatility
as a source of energy means it can be put to an almost limitless set of
applications which include transport, heating, lighting,
communications, and computation. Electrical power is the backbone
of modern industrial society, and is expected to remain so for the
foreseeable future.
In a loose but common use of the term, "electricity"
may be used to mean "wired for electricity" which means a working
connection to an electric power station. In same way Vidyut is an
attempt to connect the outer world with the Electrical Department of
RAJARAMBAPU INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY.
This is the third issue of the newsletter. Different
members of the Electrical Department have contributed at their best
to make this attempt a successful one.
In this issue we have covered all the events which have
happened in the Electrical Department such as workshops, seminars
etc. Any suggestions for the improvement are welcomed by a warm
heart.

Besides giving importance to the
teaching and development of
laboratories by procuring the state
of art equipments, the Department
of Electrical Engineering is also
involved in research in thrust areas.
Faculty members are encouraged to
take independent initiatives with
collective responsibility in all the
relevant academic/R&D dimensions
- curriculum development, research
publication in national and
international conferences and
journals, continuing education or
organization of state level technical
events etc. They have ample
freedom to associate as member of
teams with other faculty, research
engineers or with faculty in
interdisciplinary areas.
M. Tech (Power Systems) is a new
post graduate program started by
the Department in the academic
year 2011-12. The objective of the
program is to cater the increasing
academic and industry needs of the
specialized human resource
requirement in the area of Power
Systems.

“Solar Photovoltaics: Fundamentals, Technologies and Application”
ISTE-IITB workshop on "Solar Photovoltaics:
Fundamentals, Technologies and Applications", was sponsored by
MHRD, Govt. of India, under the National Mission on Education
through ICT (NMEICT.) The NMEICT, together with the "National
Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education," (NCPRE)
supported by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This
was a ten day workshop which was scheduled from 12th to 22nd
December 2011.
This workshop is part of the initiative taken by IIT Bombay
under the NMEICT, to work with Engineering Colleges in the country
to enhance the teaching skills of our faculty colleagues in core
Engineering and Science Subjects. Under this project called
"Empowerment of Students and Teachers through Synchronous and
Asynchronous Instruction," IIT Bombay conducts two-week ISTE
workshops at various remote centers across the country, during the
vacation periods in summer and winter. These workshops are conducted
in distance mode, through the AVIEW software using internet, for live
transmission.
This workshop was conducted simultaneously at 33 "remote
centers" scattered across the country, in the distance mode. The 33
remote centers had about 30-40 participants each. The workshop
included the delivery of live two-way lectures from IIT Bombay, and
locally organized tutorial and laboratory sessions. The course was
networked to the remote centers via the internet. „Department of
Electrical Engineering of Rajarambapu Institute of Technology,
Islampur‟ was one of the remote centers. Total 41 participants and 15
supporting staff attended the workshop at RIT, Islampur.

Industrial visits to HVDC substation, Padghe
and Integrated Electricals, Bangalore have
been planned for students of B.E and T.E
respectively. The dates for the visits are 15
and 16 th March 2012.

Workshop on Revised Syllabus of Subject
‘Renewable Energy Sources’ B.E. Electrical
(Semester VII)
One day workshop was organized by Department of
Electrical Engineering, RIT, Rajaramnagar on revised syllabus of
the subject ‘Renewable Energy Sources’ B.E. Electrical (Sem VII).
This workshop was held on 27 th August, 2011. This
work shop was conducted in two sessions Theory Session and
Practical Session. There was participation of 20 faculty members.

One Day Workshop on “Laboratory Practicals
in the subject
Electrical Technology and Basic Electrical
Engineering”
Department of Electrical Engineering at RIT conducted one
day workshop on 21 th Nov.2011 specifically for laboratory staff.
This workshop was designed to train the technical staff dealing
with the laboratory practical‟s for the subject „Electrical
Technology‟ of S.E.(Mechanical/Automobile/Electronics/ETC)
and also the subject „Basic Electrical Engineering‟ of F.E (All
branches).Total 20 participants attended this workshop which
was coordinated by Prof. A. R. Thorat. This would lead to better
conduction/demonstration of laboratory exercises and
development of laboratory manuals.

Electrical Engineering student association (EESA)
is organizing the state level event named “ENTHUSE 2K12”
I am thankful to all our Alumni students whose motivation
and guidance helped us a lot to get through the various
difficulties while arranging the event.Also I express my
gratitude to all the sponsorers whose generous contribution
helped us to organize ‘Enthuse 2K12’.

From the desk of EESA Coordinator
The main purpose of the EESA is to provide a
variety of educational experiences that will encourage
organization members to broaden their knowledge of and
increase their enthusiasm for their chosen occupational areas (i.e.
occupational related field trips, seminars, etc.). Provide
opportunities for social interaction among organization members.
Under EESA we have conducted various events like
seminars, industrial visits, guest lectures, soft-skills development
programs, fresher’s party etc.. and also technical and nontechnical
events through ENTHUSE for assisting students to
increase their knowledge and skills in planning, delegating,
decision making and to develop a more positive and realistic
attitude toward themselves, their peers and the college.

NTHUSE ‘2K12 –the era continues…
Electrical Engineering Dept. of Rajarambapu Institute of
Technology, Rajaramnagar under Lead College Scheme, has
planned to organize a state level event ‘ENTHUSE 2k12’ on 9 th
and 10 th March 2012.
Under this Program various events will be held which would help the
students to enhance their skills and discover their hidden talents.
Matcon, Technical paper presentation, programming, on the spot
paper presentation, etc are some of the planned subjects for the
event. For organizing the event, members of EESA i.e. Electrical
Engineering Students Association came together and worked with
great enthusiasm.

Inauguration of EESA
Inauguration of Electrical Engg. Students Association
(EESA) for the academic year 2011-12 took place in Sept
2011. EESA is formed with a view to provide platform for
budding technocrats to explore their hidden talent,
innovativeness and express their commitment towards
society and nation as well. During the function newly
appointed office bearers were introduced and the
students of S.E. were given a warm welcome to the Dept.
They were briefed on role of EESA in the various
departmental activities which attempt to develop various
skills of the students.
During the Function the rankers of the year 2010-11
were felicitated.

Phase, Four-Wire Unified Power Quality Conditioner
(UPQC) in Distributing Systems” was published by
Chandrakant L. Bhattar in international Journal of

Renewable Energy- New Era
In 21 st century, the inventions and research developments in one and all disciplines of engineering and
technology are taking place at an exponential pace. The chain of overall development in engineering and

technology is interlinked with knowledge advancements in each and every individual discipline. New
technologies 970700700 to make the best use of energy conservation to cope with the increasing demand are the need of
the hour. To meet the growing demand for energy from various sectors, it is necessary that new ways and
means must be found to convert energy to suit various needs of the consumer utilities.
Global installed power generation capacity is estimated at ~5000 GW, of which India accounts for ~174
GW. The demand for power has been increasing in India due to the growth in the Country‟s economy.
Renewable energy accounts for ~11% of the total power generation of 170 GW installed in India. Wind
energy, with an installed capacity of ~14 GW, accounts for the bulk of installed renewable energy capacity in
India.
The development of systems implementing renewable energy sources is essential to society's evolution
and survival. In our present time the amount of energy produced by a single renewable source is considerably
smaller that the amount produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, it is necessary to develop energy
systems that will use various type of renewable energy in parallel, all contributing to a large complex system.
There is significant untapped potential in areas such as off-shore wind, solar, fuel cells, small-hydro, biogas,
biomass as well as tidal and geothermal energy.
Therefore, the renewable energy sources have been one of the most important topics of research in the last
few years.
