Staffordshire University has come up with a novel way of supporting<br />
fledgling businesses through the first two vital years. It has designed<br />
a Foundation Degree in Small Business Start Up. Participants<br />
on the programme study and run their business at the same time.<br />
They are provided with high quality workspace within one of the<br />
existing University Business Villages. This immediately gives an<br />
advantage of a prestigious business address, excellent IT facilities<br />
and support and access to wider University services. The teaching<br />
input is geared towards acquiring the knowledge and skills required<br />
to create a successful enterprise. The Business Villages contain<br />
successful established enterprises who can be clients of, or suppliers<br />
to the new companies.<br />
The Enterprise and Fellowship Scheme at Staffordshire University<br />
is the best promotion of entrepreneurship.<br />
Staffordshire University has established the program which should<br />
facilitate and support students in the creation of student enterprises.<br />
The SPEED Scheme provides comprehensive support to turn students’<br />
business ideas into a commercial reality whilst giving them the skills<br />
they need to run their own company. The scheme is a collaborative<br />
programme which is University based across the West Midlands and a<br />
national SPEED website which can provide with up to date business<br />
news and events, access to other students from across the UK who<br />
have started a business with the support of SPEED.<br />

E) Staffordshire University also contributes to regional and subregional<br />
decision making by representing the university on multi<br />
agency partnerships to inform regional policy within the region.<br />
These consist of Staffordshire European Partnerships (SEP) (which<br />
provides updates on EU programmes within North Staffordshire).<br />
The External Project Team are the first point of contact for staff<br />
who want to develop new EU partnerships to strengthen existing<br />
collaborations to benefit their research or enterprise projects, new<br />
partnership relationships albeit with Universities/Public sectors or<br />
Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) from within Europe takes time and<br />
energy; the EPT help with making regional contacts, by facilitating<br />
meetings and network opportunities with regional policy officers.<br />
