eepurple network is a programme delivered by Business Development<br />

and Enterprise Office at the University of Brighton.<br />

Student placement varies between courses supported by the Schools<br />

and at a Faculty level. Undergraduate and postgraduate students from<br />

a range of disciplines and degree courses are available for placements<br />

for 1 to 12 months. It is compulsory on some, simply encouraged on<br />

others. University trainers are involved in companies as employee<br />

trainers in some cases, as partners in others.<br />

Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a partnership between<br />

a company, university and a graduate. The company benefits from<br />

a highly qualified graduate working as part of the company for<br />

two years, to bring a strategic change to the business. They are<br />

supported by a team of experts – professors, senior lecturers and<br />

researchers, who bring technical expertise, research and innovation<br />

to the company. There is a broad range of specialists including<br />

the areas of engineering, I.T., pharmacy, business and marketing,<br />

environment and land remediation, building and product design and<br />

innovation. The graduate is employed by the university on a two<br />

year contract, but spends the majority of their time working in the<br />

company as part of the company. KTP offers to gradate opportunity<br />

for career development, implementing strategic projects in a real<br />

business situation, development of responsibility and technical/<br />

business skills.<br />

E) The University of Brighton manages a range of projects to support<br />

businesses from SMEs to larger firms. These projects are designed to<br />

meet the specific needs of business and include:<br />

ProfitNet (Profit Through Networks) is working with nearly 400 companies<br />

across Sussex delivering knowledge management tools and techniques<br />

within following sectors: manufacturing, construction/technical<br />

services, creative industries, hotels, start-ups, social enterprises, and IT.<br />

The network members meet monthly to share experiences; pick up best<br />

practice; and receive specific know how on topics of interest to their<br />

sector group. The aim of the programme is to provide local industry with<br />

a hands-on and practical approach to growing better businesses. It is<br />

funded by a variety of sources including Hastings Borough Council, HEFCE,<br />

East Sussex Economic Partnership and East Sussex County Council and<br />

is free to companies.<br />

Knowledge Exchange for Product Development as a joint venture<br />

between University of Brighton, University of Portsmouth and<br />

Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, aims to develop and<br />

substantially increase access to technical knowledge, skills and services<br />

available to the product design and manufacturing sectors across the<br />

south-east region of the UK. It also provides access to the skills and<br />

services available to improve product design for a range of potential<br />

clients including start ups as well as more established firms.<br />

Community engagement at the University of Brighton is led by Community<br />

University Partnership Programme (CUPP). CUPP facilitates the development<br />

of projects and networks that link the university, local communities<br />

and community and voluntary sector organisations, for mutual benefit<br />
