SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES Learning the True Reward of Service By Nicha Ratana-Apiromyakij, Junior Executive, Interact Rotary Club t is spring, the season of the renewal Iof life and hope for the future. Once again, as they have done for the past years, members of the Interact Rotary out of the Club made a trip city, away from comfortable Bangkok and its many luxuries, to build houses for the homeless. The Habitat for Humanity trip lasted four days, from March 24-28. The 33 club members (composed of 11th and 12th grade students) were accompanied by a team of hardworking and delightful chaperones: Ms. Donna Eastlake, Ms. Jillian Nichols, Ms. Lincy Fung, and Mr. Andrew Marusak. Together, they built two houses, for two families: a factory worker with two teenage sons, and a couple with a baby on the way. Had it not been for the various fundraising activities the club coordinated, along with the efforts and donations from our community, the trip wouldn’t have been possible. Fundraising on the club’s behalf was composed of various t-shirt sales and bake sales. The greater half of funds, however, was the generous contributions of business sponsors and individuals. The Interact Rotary Club thanks you for your donations. Despite the painstaking fundraising process, the toughest, and most rewarding part of this project, was building the houses themselves. Picture it if you will: a group of kids who arrive with clean fingernails and ipods, who are taught to mix their first bucket of cement, dig their first holes, build their first walls. The labor was intensive under the sweltering heat, but anyone who went on that trip would say they loved every minute of it. Not only was it a characterbuilding, bonding activity - they had changed lives. The four days flew by. And, before the members knew it, they were handing over the keys to the house. Some students and the new homeowners 42 NEWSLETTER Volume 3, Issue 4

SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES had tears in their eyes. As their bus drove away, and the students watched the waving families disappear as they turned the corner, they felt a sense of fulfillment. Natascha Yogachandra, the club’s co-president, speaks for the members when she says, “Each year, habitat never fails to provide an opportunity for the members to step out of their comfort zone and offer a helping hand to those in need. In addition to building a home for these families, we’re building our own character and learning the true reward of service.” One club member’s remark sums it up: “We did not build houses, we built homes.” NEWSLETTER Volume 3, Issue 4 43
