HIGH SCHOOL
Know • Care • Act
Global Issues Network Conference 2010
Hong Kong
by Rasika Sethi (Grade 9)
ccording to UNICEF, 24,000
Achildren die each day due to
poverty. They “die quietly in some
of the poorest villages on earth, far
removed from the scrutiny and
the conscience of the world.
Being meek and weak in
life makes these dying
multitudes even more
invisible in death.”
1.6 billion people — a
quarter of humanity —
live without electricity.
Based on enrollment
data, about 72 million
children of primary school
age in the developing world were not
in school in 2005; 57 percent of them
were girls. And these are regarded as
optimistic numbers.
Like most students at RIS, I am
concerned about global issues and
want to do something more than just
joining campaigns online. But how
can High School students effectively
take action? This is the brick wall
that stands in our way: the long
brick wall which we all have the
responsibility to deal with. I want to
get a hammer and break down several
bricks. But how? One answer came
in Homeroom one morning. It is the
Global Issues Network Conference.
GIN is based on the ideas in Jean
Francois Rishchard’s book, ‘High
Noon’. He identifies 20 urgent
global problems and encourages the
formation of small groups around the
world to help solve them.
The theme of this year’s conference
was “Know. Care. Act.” In the course
of this inspiring conference, we were
presented with opportunities to put
together what we learned, shared,
discussed, and were influenced by to
become change makers. We attended
interactive core workshops, global
village action groups, the video
festival, inspiring student and NGO
presentations, as well as an NGO fair.
There were also influential keynote
